I’ve actually tried to bargain with a few artists I really liked as I loved the work but just couldn’t afford the price. My reasoning is if I can pay 75% of the asking price and tell anyone who comes into my home about you and your work, it adds a bit more value to your work than grinding a price for 2 years until someone grabs it and forgets who you are. The argument doesn’t work very well lol

I have two commissioned peices that I love and I hit a real sweet spot with because now the same artists are charging triple or more for similar peices. Emily carr is probably a good place to start to find some value

So, unless there's anything/anyone in particular that you are looking for, I'd suggest going to places such as Emily Carr, where they have an annual Student Art Sale or any local Art exhibition where the intention is not really about selling, but simply a way for new artists to show their work.

Find an artist you like, and get in touch with them. I'm actually in the process of commissioning a painting from an Emily Carr graduate. We discussed what I wanted, she visited our place and is now working on it.

Outside of the student sale, what's the best way to find/browse Emily Carr students?

Spectre_Cdn 01-27-2022 10:19 AM

LinkedIn? :lol

Hondaracer 01-27-2022 10:22 AM

I find a lot of local artists on IG and DM them if peices are for sale etc.

If you can find a couple of students odds are you’ll find more in their followers etc

f it, got any kids or nieces/nephews?

just do what my wife did and hang art made by your kids for free :lol
actually we have some that i think are quite good and i would have tried to bring to the office if i wasn't wfh...one is in the background in zoom meetings and ppl comment on it, at least it looks good through a webcam :lawl:

i keep getting the same letter (diff copies) sent to my address but the person on the letter doesn't live here.

i keep writing does not live here stop sending it here and drop it back in the mailbox. either the post officer derps the same letter back to me, or they keep sending another printed copy of the letter to me. 1 specific letter is starting to get annoying. all prepaid postage.

any ideas?

On the top right corner with the stamp. Does it say letter mail? Personalized mail?
Personalized mail doesn't get returned back to sender. They only pay for one way postage. So if it's that, it goes in the trash and the sender probably send you another one without updating their database.

If it is a company, I would google them, find their info@... email and send them an email informing them to take this address off their list. Use a burner email account to do that though .. not your personal go to one ... (goes without saying).

Hondaracer 01-28-2022 08:39 AM

Is there anything more annoying than a company calling you when you specifically requested an email quote? Lol

I needed a job done I couldn’t do myself so I emailed like 5 companies that could do it, 4/5 quickly responded to the email with a quote and left it open ended for me to follow up. The 5th never emailed me but power called me like 3-4 times in one day, then the guy texts me asking when they can schedule the work. I text back saying I’m in meetings all day please just email me the quote. (It’s somthing you could 100% quote from google street view etc)

No Response, then a week later power calling again.. lol.. like I know I should just pick up and say fuck off but nice understanding of your customer lol

Everytime I think I have you pegged, you go on a tangent like this and I don't know who you are again lol

Anyone fly out of YVR recently?

Is it a zoo or standard 2-3hr early is fine for check in?
Every time I've traveled in the past, I got to the gate in 20 minutes.....
Flights also at 8am, so lower traffic hour

Hondaracer 01-30-2022 10:30 AM

Domestically?

Flew twice in the summer and both times it was checked in and through security in like 20 minutes or less

mikemhg 01-30-2022 12:24 PM

Security at the airports has been relatively dead as of late for flying out of YVR or Abby.

It's coming back where it's somewhat slow (PCR checking and all that crap the CBSA are doing now).

Any suggestions for a patio table/chair for my apartment balcony? Not looking to break the bank.

Also looking for a portable bbq. Any recommendations?

Not looking to break the bank for both items lol.

Hondaracer 01-30-2022 05:11 PM

Downtown Costco had a little mini Weber that would fit the bill

If you're not picky, have you looked at the used market ala FB marketplace and the like? I find that patio furniture is one of those things that lots of people buy new, then find they don't use it at all and just dump for a fraction of their original cost.

Whatever you do, don't buy that cheap Ikea set. Thing will list 2 years tops, not to mention the chair is super uncomfortable

A bunch of C-Lais and other mainlanders get into a “brawl” with hair pulling and umbrellas in dispute over a parking spot at Richmond’s Foody world.

The crappy background music for one of the videos is hilarious. :lawl:

What a way to start the Lunar New Year.

I was waiting for Gandalf to get out of his Corolla and start swinging

GLOW 02-01-2022 10:42 AM

the 1 guy was on top, he almost seemed like he didn't want to fight, kneeling on the guy holding his wrists, and his punches look like in slow mo like he wasn't sure if he really wanted to hit him.

weird

Presto 02-01-2022 10:47 AM

Anyone with experience know who is responsible for trimming this in the City of Burnaby?

Photo taken from our kitchen window. Not sure who's responsible if it's the city because it's high up near the power lines, property owner, or if it's us because it's overhanging our property.

I know the City of Burnaby website says the property owner has to maintain the tree, but just wanted to confirm because I've read conflicting experiences.

I would email the city that photo and say you are concerned about the lines running through the overgrown branches

Yeah, sent an email earlier. Just curious if anyone else had experience with a similar situation.

My mom mentioned someone from the city comes by once a year to take a look at the tree to see if it's going to cause damage to power lines or something, but I don't remember them doing anything for the past couple of years.

Hondaracer 02-01-2022 11:33 AM

Can make a fairly safe assumption as to what’s going to happen lol

Contact city, they say it’s hydros issue, contact hydro, they say it’s a city issue.
