Yup......... like those charities that deal with world hunger, poverty, and whathaveyou. Little of the donated funds actually get to where it is needed. The majority goes to administration and operational costs. Boils down to a lot of money going into the pockets of the organizers. Sad.

A few charities are honest and they are the ones people need to support. I believe in that cult called, Salvation Army. They do a fine job. I'm sure there are some not so honest people there, as well, but still better than most. There are a few websites out there that list charities that are trustworthy. Can't think of them, atm.

I recently volunteered throught Habitat for Humanity at a local construction site, putting up resilient channels on to the ceiling joists above for 5 hours is no joke.

Yes to the above and you can investigate/research which non-profits are better at more of the dollar going to actual cause/recipients vs. admin fee/salary. We all know that Cancer (as good of a cause as it is) ... fundraising for cancer is a business.

I will say I think giving is good but nothing quite beats getting personally involved somehow through volunteerism. The reward and meaningfulness comes when you interact with people and see how your itty bitty part ($ or labour) has impacted someone personally.

I don't know about the ones you guys are talking about, but a lot of legit charities use donation funds to pay employees. Not every place can just be run by volunteers - they need actual employees and professionals, and those people need to be paid a fair salary like any job.

^ yes for sure, you need good people to run non-profits. But there is a general % that deems a non-profit as 'efficient' and effective, somewhere in the range of 10-20% to admin/salary. Because they are non-profits, they must disclose their financials and it is somewhat easy to access. I mean you don't want to donate to an organization that take 50 cents (50%) on the dollar that you intend to give ... that is not really efficient.

All good smart prudent philanthropists will ask, 'What is your organization's admin/salary %?'

In fact, there is a rating scale for charities based on a number of factors, one of which is admin fee, others include impact, etc. Charity Intelligence Canada - https://www.charityintelligence.ca/c...ng-methodology

And here is their Top 100 charities - https://www.charityintelligence.ca/c...ed-charities-2

Disaster relief where governments match your donation is always a simple one. Plus get tax receipt. Covenant House. Doesn’t matter how much goes to admin, it’s just an important service. I believe it’s also a matched donation.

What ever happened to RS blood drive and food bank programme?

The ones that bother me are the ones that demand a monthly subscription.

I've had them come to my door and I offered to make a donation, but because I wasn't willing to sign up for the subscription they turned down the donation altogether.

Any charity that turns down any amount of money, is in my opinion, not a serious charity at all.

The moderators who used to organize them either vacated their roles or have moved on from the forum.

Anyone is free to take this up to organize on their own. The Christmas Toy Drive was a tradition but stopped for a while.

Whether it is an official Revscene event/drive, I think you'd need to run that by the Administrators to get alignment/support. Hopefully someone like rb can chime in.

As Dukes said, most of the past event organizers have moved on from RS as well as shop sponsors where we could hold events. I believe the last Toy & Food Drive we had was in 2014 or 2015 at Soundsgood near Ikea.

By all means, if anyone wants to get another Christmas toy/food/blood drive going this year, shoot me a PM of what your plans are and i’ll get the RS approval process going

If anyone is feeling kind of off or down, try calling (707) 873-7862 and get a pep-talk from a kindergartener. No talking required. Just press the appropriate number related to your situation.

What would you think of changing our Province's name, British Columbia?

At first, I thought it was a waste of time and cancel/woke culture but then, I thought more about it. When the Queen died and all the hoopla about UK/monarchy, I was one of the first to say we should abolish our ties, it's a waste of time, and vastly $$$$ to have Lieutenant Governors for each province and one for the country. So if I'm anti-monarchy ...it just dawned on me how the name, 'British Columbia' (Columbus) represented this tie that I despise and abhor. So ... in short, if there was a movement to change the name, I would not oppose it, I might even support it.

Is anyone else noticing an influx of morons driving with blue/aqua LED/HIDs in foglights/highbeams? And they're not even ricey cars, they're like unmodified ML's and X5s, Camry's, Altimas, etc.

Annoying as fuck, and I thought blue is highly illegal - why aren't these assholes getting VIs?
