Best place to buy a Chinese sponge fruit cake in Vancouver/Burnaby? Maxims Bakery?

EvoFire 01-26-2023 03:00 PM

Just don't get it from T&T bakery, their cakes are horrible now for some reason. Used to be decent.

You can try Saint Germain. It's pretty decent. There's one in Metrotown. Yeah T&T cakes aren't the greatest.

Yan Bakery on East Hastings. Go in person. Friendly owners. Ask for Helen (owner.) Top notch HK style cakes. Bring cash. Don't insult your family.

whitev70r 01-26-2023 03:37 PM

Michelle's bakery on West Boulevard. Cake prices have gone through the roof lately!

Mikoyan 01-26-2023 03:54 PM

Galaxy bakery at 42nd and Victoria Dr. Just had a chocolate sponge cake last week that was pretty good.

Seems like a hit or miss. Saint Germain went down in quality, while T&T@Olympic Oval was acceptable.

======

So i woke up and had this massive hankering for krispy kreme doughnuts. Drove there at like 7am to grab 2 dozen but i dislike the glaze on the doughnut (its too sweet... like British level of sweetness). is there any way to remove the glaze without destroying the integrity of the doughnut? my wife just wipes it off with a napkin but it looks like you stepped on the doughnut if you do that. I tried rinsing the doughnut in water but i wanted to throw up after eating that soggy mess.

Yo that's hilarious, I legit was searching a week ago if Krispy Kreme made a less icing covered version of their glazed donut :lol

They don't, but wtf that's funny :lol

its true though. that shit is sweet as all hell and gonna put me in a diabetic coma. So i was successfully able to use a butter knife and scrape off some of the glaze and it taste SO MUCH BETTER.

I hear stories that if you go when they have that "hot doughnut" sign on, you can ask for doughnuts that arent glazed. then you just go home and add some jam or whatever to it yourself. MUST TRY NEXT TIME.

p.s. i still self failed myself for it. kinda lameFeelsBadMan

When they are making it, you can ask them to pull one off the line before it gets glazed, they'll do it.

Let your dog lick that shit off............ just kidding.

BTW, have we not had a RS meat at Krispy Kreme in the past?

Badhobz 01-26-2023 08:15 PM

i dont know if i wanna go to that part of surrey for a mEAT.

Wasnt that the same place where those kids were taunting the cops last summer and throwing/starting shit?

If you don't mind heading a bit further down the hwy1, the Taster's Bakery just across Port Mann is always great.

So much so that we'd buy one from time to time to eat it without needing to be a birthday or anything like that.

Liquid_o2 01-27-2023 12:57 PM

Yan's will be fine. We had our wedding cake done there, and people kept asking us where it was from.

Also, I think they can do a durian sponge cake too.

But it’s soooooo soft

westopher 01-27-2023 02:15 PM

Haha yeah I haven't had a hard doughnut before.
Go try the sourdoughnut at luckys. Best doughnut I've ever had. Glazed, but not too heavy and has the sourdough tang. Fluffy as a cloud.

It's gonna suck. Everyone is gonna hate you. LOL! :ilied:

Just kidding. Similar to Mikoyan. Got our wedding cake there. I wasn't a believer of everyone saying the cake there is good. I'm a believer now. :alone:

Appreciate the suggestion, since you're in the restaurant Bizz, i trust your recommendations (the wife's asking if you know a place that does red velvet cream cheese frosting cupcakes that doesnt taste like a bag of dicks)

whitev70r 01-27-2023 03:50 PM

Didn't really want to start a new thread about this but in Memphis, there was another incident of police brutality on a black man. Victim is Tyre Nichols BUT the 5 cops were all black ... wth is going on here?

Spoiler!

Badhobz 01-27-2023 03:52 PM

thank god (eruhhh kinda?) that they were black. if they were white, Memphis would be burning right now.
But fuck those 5 assholes. they'll get theirs in jail for sure.
