hey im all for VR pixel pussy. its a great experience!
but i dont think this is gonna change that unless there is more 3rd party support. Knowing how annoying apple is to lock down anything that has DLNA support or 3rd party storage access, Ill wait for the next gen or later.
While I don't know why a normal person would want a VR headset the reviews for the Vision Pro show it works pretty great. It just lacks a compelling app which I'm sure will happen over time - OnlyFans for Vision Pro of course.
AR has limited applications for your everyday consumer. Why the fuck would i want to strap a piece of shit to my head (only 2h battery life by the way) to do desktop stuff ? What conceptual bs does AR help me with? most engineering isnt done in AR nowadays, still traditional CAD.
VR headsets only appeal in 2 categories. PORN and GAMES. nothing else.
AR headsets dont make any sense for most people... hence why MS hololens was a complete flop.
It makes sense only because it's what has to happen before our future can happen... this thing is making important strides in connecting outside of the glasses and also in gesture technology... not having to use hand controls is huge.
It's just a natural step toward one day being able to slip on a contact lens and do everything or read other languages etc.
After yesterday's Apple announcement, it's easier than ever to imagine a future where millions of fans can get the "courtside experience" from their couch.
Here is @benthompson — a big NBA fan — on his experience using the Vision Pro yesterday.
Ok, this is a use case I can get behind. Live sports like I'm there - watching an F1 race from the stands or an NFL game from the sidelines. Still not $3500 of use case but as the price falls it could become a pretty interesting experience I could get behind.
its good such a big player is getting into this space. Maybe zuckafuck wasnt that crazy with his METAspace concept after all? too bad hes abandoning his "horizon worlds" now after spending billions on it.
Many in the tech world believe that VR is a dead egg, it's never going to reach mass adoption, and I truly believe that as well.
The tech isn't there, and won't be (potentially ever). No one wants to sit wearing a hot and heavy screen inches away from their eyes for any duration of time.
Remember when we all thought people would want to hold Zoom parties, or attend concerts virtually as opposed to in person?
yeah its true. I honestly thought google glass had more viability but shows what i know. If they could have made glass smaller/more integrated i think it would have done better.

That sure as hell didn't pan out
You simply can't replace the physical world.
Kids today are doing just that though, in Fortnight rather than in VR; the next generation will definitely have come up having that type of experience.
Pretty soon it will be too inhospitable to go outside, so we'll all have to turn ourselves into Matrix batteries anyway, so this is just one step towards that wonderful future.

Fortnight is still a video game, that argument doesn't really apply. Online RPGs are still a thing, but they're not replacing physical concerts, or in-person interactions writ-large. Besides, we don't model our tech purely based on what kids are doing, children also aren't buying $3K+ headsets.
Look how Facebook has been quietly stepping back from the Metaverse, they've lost billions on the project, adoption is simply not there.
The problem with VR is that the human body literally lacks an ability to use this hardware for an extended duration of time. There's comes a point around an hour or so mark where people experience vision problems vertigo/motion sickness, and spatial orientation problems.
That's a physical problem that we might not be able to overcome. This is why VR will always be niche to a degree. Not to be a pessimist, but let me know when we've reached a tech level in VR where we're not essentially strapping a cellphone screen a few inches from your face.
I’ve played over 80h on Skyrim vr and over 1000h on flight sim vr. You get used to it. It doesn’t bother me much anymore but initially it’s quite disorienting at the beginning.
What has always ruined VR for me and 3D TV’s etc. is when you have a head set or glasses and you can see the frame/outside the glasses. Completely destroyes the immersiveness of it for me.
at least with this apple one it’s basically all consuming and takes up all your peripheral etc.

I tried my buddies Oculus playing some shooter game and after 15 minutes I had to stop and sit down cause I felt so nauseous and I never really get nauseous from anything else. It was enough for me to not bother buying anything like that maybe I'll give it a shot in the future if the tech improves a lot.

If you're having a session any longer than an hour or so, I'd question if you're actually human
This is why it will always be niche and only utilized for a small subset of activities/usages.
What I'm saying is many of these companies want to pretend and sell the idea that VR will be the groundbreaking coming in tech akin to the first iPhone, or MP3s.

I got massive nausea playing anything where my view was moving, but I wasn't moving - aka. playing a first person shooter my character moved with the thumbstick. Luckily the Oculus store makes it easy to refund games.
Apparently it's normal and only gets better if you play more.
The few times I hooked up my Oculus to my PC was to play this. It was pretty fucking cool, lol. Just walked around, picking up guns, adding attachments, manually reloading them (say a bolt-action sniper), shooting targets, etc.
I moved in that game by flicking the thumb stick to a marked location (like a teleport) so there was no nausea there.

It will not.
I tried the latest Microsoft Flight Simulator with the Oculus and it was actually super sick. I flew over my house multiple times and even tried an allahu akbar, lmao, but even my RTX 3080 was chugging a little.
I think the next generation of flight simulator and whatever available tech will be absolutely stunning.

@Badhobz this explains the use case for the Vision Pro more. TL;DR - it's not a VR headset. Stop treating it like a VR headset. Lol.

Whether it’s telepresence via FaceTime, turning the room into your personal spatial computing space, watching movies on a virtual TV mapped to the geometry of your wall, or interacting with dinosaurs that are standing next to you, it’s augmented reality. It’s all about putting virtual objects in real space.
Tellingly, Apple hasn’t announced any immersive VR games for the device. The few games the company did talk about during the WWDC keynote were 2D games played on a virtual TV.
Even when turning the crown all the way up to maximize immersion, I was still much more aware of my surroundings than in any VR headset. So if you’re expecting a successor to the Oculus and Meta Quest throne, forget about it. That’s not what Vision Pro is.
Instead, it’s a first look at something else entirely. It’s far too soon to say whether there will be a market for it, and I won't say it’s worth its ultra-steep price for most people—in part because the demo I received was highly controlled, and there was no opportunity to discover friction points or edge cases.
Regardless, even having used dozens of VR and AR headsets over the years, it was truly something I had never seen before. It’s been a while since we’ve gotten that from Apple.

Last night I had the weirdest dream, I was in the USA somewhere with my gf and buying a ticket to fly to Calgary, we had some time to kill and she wanted to walk into some big arena that was playing EDM music but I was hungry so I walked over to an area where some shops were.
I was at the entrance to a donair place, but it mostly sold raw meats that were sitting out in the open... there was a tall white guy at the entrance and he was saying out loud "Fuckkkk this place, so gross with the meats out everywhere I'd never eat it unless I wanted to die, but the donair is bomb" and literally in my dream I was like "That's hondaracer"... never met him, no idea what he looks like, but I was totally confident in my dream that it was him... went inside and he was paying and I was paying and I said to him "Hey are you hondaracer?" and he was like "How did you know that?" and I introduced myself and he asked me what I was doing there, so I was telling him that I was going to Calgary with my gf and stuff, then he pulls out a US $20 bill and slapped it against my chest and said "Get a drink for you and your girl have fun but you need to get out of here" and I was like "Why?" and he was like "Cuz I'm going to burn this fuckin place down but I don't want anyone that I know to be in here... so just take the money and go" so I was like okay I'm out.
Then I left and found my gf and told her we were going to be late for our flight and we start running to the airport which for some reason was literally right next to us, but we got stopped because there was ambulances and some guy was laying on the ground bleeding, security guy said somebody just walked up and stabbed him. Then Hondaracer walks up and stands next to me, and I look back, the whole market is on fire and he is acting like he doesn't even notice that, but he's looking at the guy and says "See, if more criminals were in jail, that guy wouldn't be dead" and then he walked away... and that's when I woke up.
