Panasonic used to be the brand to get. We're talking way back. In fact, they were called National Rice Cookers. Made by Matsushita Electric (Panasonic). I still have my mom's National Mochi Maker. It's nearly 45 years old, but still makes perfect mochi.
I think they were the only company that made huge ass restaurant size rice cookers. Not sure what's being used nowadays. I used to work at a Japanese distributor that dealt with Matsushita products (when I was in high school). Drove around in a panel van........... pads on the sides that served as not only padding to protect products, but.............
Yup, shaggin wagon........ I was the asian version of 68style
Ah....... the good ol' days.

My parents had a National when I was growing up, I think it predated me by probably 5 years and it was bomb proof. I can't remember if they still have it.
Costco has this one, it seems to fit the bill for a good price? I may be white but I need rice too much to wait for a sale lol. https://www.costco.ca/tiger-micom-5....000035660.html Quote:

Our old one was a National. We had it for as long as I could remember up until like maybe 10 years ago. We definitely got our moneys worth.

I've mentioned this before. My mom had a friend who made the most amazing rice. The traditional way. Pot over flame.
I remember her being autistic. Gifted when it came to traditional cooking.
I used to make rice the traditional way. Having a gas stove, I should really take up the challenge. Boil until water is almost gone. Turn it down, then off when there are holes in the rice (formed from the bubbling of rice). Take pot off stove and let cool. Fluff the rice a bit later. Put it all in a wooden rice tub (ohitsu) and cover.
Instead of traditional wooden ohitsu, I use this https://www.amazon.ca/Norpro-1066-To...cx_mr_hp_atf_m
Cheaper on eBay or Amazon.com. Same ones the sample ladies use at Costco. Keep rice warm and is dishwasher and microwave safe.

I've always cooked rice on the stove. The idea of having another giant piece of shit to store in my tiny kitchen is insane haha. The instant pot pisses me off enough.

Admittedly I do have a stovetop pressure cooker tho.

JO was a "who cares," kind of school. Tupper had a bit of a bad rep. Killarney and Windemere, just like JO. Nothing came out of there. Gladstone was interesting, though. | I went to Gladstone in the late 00s. We had a few troublemakers but they all got sent elsewhere. Pretty laid back from what I remember - students were mostly Asian (Viet/Chinese) with a bit of brown and white. Didn't hear much out of Windermere or DT. I assumed Brit was just kids from chinatown and natives. Never crossed my mind that there were guidos, but it makes sense since commercial dr is right there
My viet coworker went to Tupper in the early 00s and said it was a tough school - same with Killarney. Quote:

Brown? Never saw a single brown kid at Brit. Little Italy was like chinatown. The Italians are now in North Burnaby. Not sure when that happened. Neighbourhoods change, I guess.
I take that back, I do remember one brown kid. Last name was Sodhi. We called him Sodhi Pop. Only reason I remembered him. One black dude, my best friend. That's about it. Black and white......... errrr....... white and yellow.

We've been using the same Toshiba rice cooker since we moved in 2006.. Still works fine! Most of our other appliances have been replaced - fridge, washer, kettles, etc. Dryer got blown away in a storm. Rice cooker is still going, though it looks rough. Takes a long time too, like 45 minutes.
I like being able to just throw in rice and make the rest of dinner, and it's one less thing to cook.
I use a Tefal "instant pot" pressure cooker too, and it makes rice in about 15 minutes but it's not as good so it's only used when I forget to make rice (which happens more often than I'd like)

I hate the instant pot, massive thing that takes up a ton of space and dishes all come out the same. Don't get me started on that inner pot.
We do need a new rice cooker cause our made in China Tiger is wearing out. It's provided 11 years of good usage but we need a new one. Other than the Costco one that seems to be quite good, what else do you guys recommend? I've tried to do my research but there's just too many options out there.

The Zojirushi neuro fuzzy logic rice cookers consistently are top 2 in most reviews. $250 seems like a lot of money for a rice cooker but I suppose it'll last 10-15 years so not really expensive.
