Had a reality check of my age smack me in the face a few months ago.
Had to drive up to Cumberland for a project, so I took my 20 year old Uvic coop student with me. There was a little record shop up there, and he asked if we could stop in there and I said sure.

So here I am looking to add some Hendrix and Marley to my collection, he finds Radiohead The Bends. I'm like "Fuck, I bought that album on CD when it was released, thanks for making me feel old"

Ah yes, classics from the late 1900's

Don't ever feel old, guys. Just keep on keeping on. The advantage us older folks have is the experience and then some. Keep current. I was with my daughter when I went to Hooked on Phonics. I listen to indie label stuff as much as I can and try to get stuff on RSD. She found a vinyl copy of both our favourite local group, Teagan and Sarah. The one that was released on/for RSD 2022.

She doesn't even have a player yet............... gotta make sure she doesn't get a Crossley, gulolololol.

House warming present? Anyway, gonna call her and see if it is indeed a red vinyl. Should be.

Tegan and Sara shouldn't be anyone's favourite local group!!! A few catchy songs but... ermmm...

Aren't they from Calgary anyway?

Just found a box of LP's. Most are still sealed. Playing Heart's Dreamboat Annie, ATM. 176 versions of this album over the years. I think the one I have is one of the worst of the 176 versions, lol. I might have to go back to a conical stylus for these crappy LP's. My Nagaoka Elliptical stylus reveals too much. Cheap made in china Audio-Technica might do the trick............. or go buy a Victrola! Can't damage the records any more than the shape they come brand new. Hee hee, hue hue, pew pew.

Update: Upon closer look, as in magnifying glass, the Rumours LP I have has KPG/SH@ATM on the dead wax/run out groove. It's a Gray / Steve Hoffman cut. Nice!

And, I also found a Rumours DVD. The one that is full of interviews. Man, some interesting stuff. The band members and the sound/recording engineers. The production issues and personal conflicts. Drummer boy's wife was being screwed by his best friend "He's a good friend. I guess it's better someone you know than some stranger - twisted." Christine McVie (RIP) in Songbird. Brings tears to one's eyes. Stevie Nicks was surprised the album ever made it to production. Best $12.00 I've spent.

Silver Springs - Best song that never made it on the album because of the limits of vinyl. What a beautiful song.

Damn !! 2nd time workers reject mediated contract agreement

http://https://www.cbc.ca/news/canada/british-columbia/port-strike-reject-agreement-1.6922140

MarkyMark 07-28-2023 09:11 PM

Well the first time it didn't actually make it to the members to vote, this time it was the actual workers who shot it down.

Sounds like local 500 dislikes this contract a lot more than 502

Or would Jagmeet only do that if the Libs doesn't deliver on the dental plan coverage thing?

(Honestly, I think Turdeau and his new cabinet really need to step up and send the longshoremen back to work.)

Jagmeet has already said he will not let the government interfere. If the Alberta government had any guts they would have stopped the coutts blockade.

Same shit different government.

Hilariously I talked to some of my longshore buddies and they all thought it was gonna go through. They even told me I shouldn’t worry.

Projected recovery date for the existing 13 day strike is/was already late august (if railcars were readily available which they are not right now). In reality my internal projections had recovery pegged in October. Given just how poorly rail performance usually is (like when the flood happened 2 years ago and it washed out rail lines).

Ughh… I need a vacation.

GLOW 07-29-2023 09:22 AM

so the lease in my subaru is up in a year so i get an email from the lease manager about options.

one is if i choose to buy it out what the cost is (i have to confirm those #'s, seemed higher from what i recall).

one thing that jumped out in the email was a $900 admin fee added to the buyout costs.

pretty sure i was charged an admin fee ($500? i can't recall) when i signed up to lease the vehicle (maybe it was waived), but is it legit to charge another admin fee, and at $900 <- this seems steep

any way i can negotiate this out if i plan to buy out the vehicle end of lease, or do i have to eat it?

wondering what other folks' experience with this is

What does the original paperwork state for buyout fees?

yray 07-29-2023 09:47 AM

just pay direct to Toyota finance now and screw the dealer

unless you need to finance your buyout

i dont think you can do that. I tried to buy out the VW sportwagen before and they wouldn't deal with me. Told me to go through the dealer.

EvoFire 07-29-2023 01:00 PM

BMW won't release my car until it was inspected. Had to pay the dealer an inspection fee.

Valley Bakery in the Heights is closing its doors in August. Damn...... such sad news. The old man deserves the break. Hats off to him.

My family will miss going there.

Dude so many of our old haunts around Hastings are closing or closed already. That London drugs on east Hastings and penticton is closed now.

I bought my first timex watch from there and a crap ton of Lego. I used to walk to that store every time I’m in the old neighborhood just for memories.

Sigh.. it’s a sad day. I still remember when fields was where that Scotia bank is on Hastings.

Adding to another list of businesses closing down, Hoy's Wonton House is closing today.

My mom said that my uncle used to go there all the time when he worked late night shifts. I ordered food from them a few times and I thought the food was pretty typical greasy diner food, but my mom hated it, lol.

P.S. Just realized it's 人人食家 on the sign. My mom always called it 人人麵家.

StylinRed 07-29-2023 09:18 PM

Drove by there the other day and it was packed! Was telling my mom looks like business is back to normal for them and we wondered if it was being run by the same people

Last time I went there was like 4years ago, food was horrible tho

I have a place that I like too that my wife can't stand.. 1930's cha chan teng that we used to go to all the time but our location shut down and she never wants to go to any of the others lol

It's a nice place! Classic! LUL

(no really it kind of always sucked but was really cheap.. afternoon tea was like $23 hkd back then including a drink, not sure how much it costs now though)

Might go some time when I'm in that part of town alone, just for kicks

Edit: holy crap prices went up... It's cool that cha chan tengs are popular with Chinese tourists, but it really drives the price up in TST and places like that.

Razor Ramon HG 07-29-2023 11:15 PM

Those pics reminds me of something I saw on IG today. Some random Filipino (influencer I think) was recommending #9 in Richmond and all the Chinese folks in the comments flaming her, lol.

(Not that the food in your pictures are bad, the pictures just reminded me of the post)

My rule for 24 joints are they're only meant for when everything is closed. That said, number 9 is as close as you can get to being maybe acceptable in the day time, maybe.

Oh the food is bad lol.. Well it's fine for what it is

What's wrong with #9? It used to be a decent late night spot when I was last in town (so mid 00's). I guess it makes sense that a place can really fall in 2 decades, but to be flameworthy is surprising
