When someone owns the masters to any musical work, it means they have the full right of when, where and how those original songs can be played and collect royalty. In the case of Taylor Swift, her old label owns all her masters. Thus preventing her to license her songs in any way she sees fit. She still collects a royalty payment on the composition of those songs (publishing rights), but she has little say on what to do with the music say... a movie soundtrack or whatever. After failing to recover those rights, she decided to re-record all those albums and call them "Taylor's Version". And this way... she owns the master (AKA the full right) to those songs. And for example, if on Spotify you play the original version, the royalty splits and goes a portion to her old label, who owns the master right, a portion to TS for publishing rights of her works (more precisely to whoever wrote those songs) because you are playing the OG songs that are basically a copy of that original master that her old label owns. It might seem like a money grab from TS, but it's actually not... if you bring the user case above I just wrote to say a movie studio comes and says they want to license a song to feature in a movie... it's the label who decides whether or not they can feature the song in the movie since they own the rights to the masters. Even if TS wants nothing to do with it... there isn't much she can do as the label owns the right to those original "recording of the song". All she can expect is some publishing royalty and that's it. It's not up to her. Taylor's version, OTOH, means that the total control of those songs, should one decide to use it, it has to go through Taylor's decision. |
this girl must be a damn billionaire by now. 6 shows in toronto? that's 300,000 tickets.. and they're not cheap. |
Probably 2x billionaire ... good on her though, she gifted like $100K bonus to each of her truck driving crew for the show. Usually, there are 2 sets of crews, one drives to next destination while she is performing at a location. Apparently, there were about 50 members of the crews. Cool $5M ... as a tip! Now there's a sugar mommy right there ... some lucky guy. But when they break up, he gets a dedicated song about how scummy he was ... :lol. |
Yeah she apparently gave away 150 million dollars in bonuses to her crew for the tour. It's pretty cool. The whole corporate world could learn something from an early 30s pop star. You can be generous and still have way more fucking money than anyone should have instead of only the latter. |

My next quest is to look for an audiophile copy of Carole King's Tapestry. One album all collectors are supposed to have. Abbey Road, after that. |
Is there any other artist in the world right now that can even come close to selling out stadiums like this at the price they are going for? Pretty incredible |
Ed Sheeran if he wants to go that route? But I don't feel like he's down for the huge shows, there was an article awhile back about him "hiding" in Australia and trying to figure things out. |
I don't know why more people aren't talking about how there's some new release weeks on Spotify where Ed Sheeran is like all over rap tracks. I find it endlessly amusing all these rappers sign up to work with a dude that looks like an albino oompa-loompa. |
You do realize Ed Sheeran got famous from playing in a black club in LA because of Jamie Foxx right? He also love rap more then anything else. He looks albino but he's just a light skin brotha lol |
I did not read or watch The Ed Sheeran Story... so no I did not know that lol |

Speaking of music, not sure if I'm just getting older or coz I moved out to the tri-cities, but lately I've been unironically REALLY into mainstream country music. I just find it really simple, comfortingly, and quaint. It's just about boats, beer, whiskey, trucks, and the opposite sex. Anybody else finding this as well? |
^I used to HATE country music. As I've gotten older I've learned to appreciate it a little more, I wouldn't listen to it at the gym or at a party, but for certain activities it's great. Sitting on the patio at the cabin with some buds having beers, boating, floating down a river, around a camp fire, fuck ya. |
Yeah maybe that's what it is. As I've gotten older I prefer activities like the ones you've listed, and it's just a perfect setting for country music. I kind of listened to it once in awhile before, but then actually got super hooked on it a few months ago on my roadtrip through the Maritimes when I'm driving like 5 hours a day. Wanted something upbeat but not too intense or whatever, and country music just hit that sweet spot cruising the Cabot trail or in the south shore. |
I can't really stand any of the new stuff, but have been listening to a lot of old stuff ie: Willie Nelson, Waylon Jennings, etc as of late. |

Honestly if you haven't heard the album Folklore by Taylor swift you are missing out. Written with Aaron dessner from the national and Justin Vernon of bon iver. It's a fucking hammer of an album, and totally solidifies TS as a true talent that goes well beyond a pop star. I wouldn't sit through a concert TBH because it isn't my thing beyond that album, but even the snobbiest of music snobs should appreciate her. |
