Has it gotten to the point yet where it's cheap and easy to set up a solar panel and battery ourselves? Like there must be someone selling foldable panels that you just throw onto the roof and run a cable to a battery, right?

I'd like to just have enough to power the AC in my office that's on the entire day when I'm home. Try to use that sun that's nuking my room to at least pay for itself a bit.

This is a bigger scope, but have you guys looked into installing a solar roof as a longer-term solution? I heard the ROI on those are pretty decent by selling generated power to the CLP.

As bad as it is in NYC, the silver lining I see is that it finally hit a major American metropolis. If going through the direct impact of climate change doesn't serve as a wake up call for the US as well as the American public, nothing is going to change their minds that climate change is real.

It happens every year 30 times a year. California burns down. Florida gets engulfed my hurricanes, tornado alley gets worse every year, heatwaves in Texas take out the power grid. There's no way the average American can correlate the issues.

If I owned the place I would 100% do that! Our rooftop would be perfect for it. But if it's for the landlord, they get all the benefit and we have to deal with all the drawbacks

donk. 09-30-2023 07:26 PM

I heard solar is never worth it, unless it's for your own house and you live In the middle of nowhere with no power

unit 09-30-2023 08:38 PM

depends on where you live and how much electricity costs. here in bc power is pretty cheap... hard to recoup costs on a solar setup here.

in alberta energy is more than twice as expensive so it could be viable there.

68style 09-30-2023 10:13 PM

I noticed quite a few solar panels my last visit to Calgary

SkinnyPupp 09-30-2023 10:23 PM

Power is expensive here and they use coal and oil so there's a lot of incentive to use solar.

The only issue is the hottest time of the year is also generally the cloudiest. But you can sell into the grid anything you don't use.

My GE side by side fridge smells like burnt plastic when opened. Its almost 16 years old…what could it be? I replaced the circuit board last year.

MG1 10-01-2023 09:31 AM

Time for a new fridge. How much did the circuit board cost? Better off with new one on no interest payment plan. Make sure to get extra warranty. I've had my LG fridges covered under warranty. As some amuricans would say, warrantee!

I'm always hoping applicances break down just before warrantee runs out. Get new replacement that's uptodate.

Home Depot 24 month payment plan. Offered once in a while. 18 months is normal.

I made the mistake of purchasing all appliances when I purchased the house some 9 years ago. Went to Harvey's 'cause local and I knew the sales guy. Fast forward, the place is gone and the brand he recommended, Viking, is not even carried by anybody (as far as I know). Case of locally owned not being so great. I never thought Harvey's would be gone. Been with them for like forever...........even when I moved out to Langley, I went with them. Loyal customer was I.

Hey, if any of you eastenders drive by Rupert and 22nd, let me know if and when the Chong Lee opens up. They said October of 2023. Long wait........... hope worth the wait.

I wAnder if butcher with big mole on his upper lip will be back. He always gave me the best cut of char siu. Hope the place stays clean, too. I give it two years.

Place was good for quick dinner/lunch (Kent's Kitchen style). A lot closer to me, as well. Not 100% sure if the kitchen will be back. The anticipation and suspense is killing me, gulolololol.

Viking is still around. It is a higher end brand of Whirlpool. A lot of shared parts.

Badhobz 10-01-2023 03:52 PM

So is Jenn air. A higher version of Viking trolololol

It’s probably that circuit board that you replaced last year. The new stuff are all garbage. If anything failed it’s that pos and not the condenser or anything else (since it’s been going for 16 years)

punkwax 10-01-2023 05:31 PM

Sort of playing devils advocate here, but companies were also sourcing semiconductors/capacitors etc from new and/or potentially less trustworthy suppliers just to fulfill orders/generate revenues while there were supply chain issues.

Long story short, if company XYZ is back to their regular supply chain and able to provide the higher quality and reliable doodads they had before COVID, it might be worth asking about before bucking up for a new product.

Actually haven't watched this yet since it just came out, but this is one of my favourite Youtube channels, so I know it'll be good

Edit I got to watch it and as expected, it's really good. I appreciated the focus on pre-European history, and he doesn't shy from the dark parts of history at all
