my favorite pho that died was Pho THang Long on Main st. That dude used to have the biggest portions and the best tasting broth for like 6 bucks a bowl. Can feed an amry with the bowl that big.

Does this place really only have 2 dishes and no menu?

I walked into here with my coworker for lunch. We sat down, a minute later dude walks up, we ask for the menu, and in broken engrish we get "beef o chicken?

Coworker asks if that's all they have, he says yes, then we walk out lol.

Coworker has a sensitive stomach, didn't wanna risk it

Man, I miss that place. I used to go there after class when I was at SFU in the late 90s. Still the best broth I've had after all these years and the portion were huge. The old man that worked there was great.

Badhobz 10-03-2023 06:21 AM

^yes exactly. Their springrolls were pretty shit though, but man ole man was that soup ever good. That owner (short little, stocky nammer guy) was always wearing shorts even in the dead of winter, he had like military cargo shorts, or some sort of shorts on.

Closer to my parents home, im still missing Bao Chau now that its closed. God, that was my go to Pho for years

Edit I got to watch it and as expected, it's really good. I appreciated the focus on pre-European history, and he doesn't shy from the dark parts of history at all

This was really good. I'm a map nerd so the store is worth a visit for me. Thanks for sharing this.

Yeah, it's only 2 dishes there. It's pretty solid stuff too. Imagine a Michelin starred Tokyo ramen place that only serves 2 things except WAY trashier.

CivicBlues 10-03-2023 07:57 AM

If anything having only 2 dishes ensures that there is high turnaround of ingredients. You'l be less likely to get sick eating there than a place with 50 things on the menu that people rarely order.

:okay:

Bao Chau wasn’t even the best viet place on the block lol. Place was pretty nasty by the end even by viet restaurant standards lol

Badhobz 10-03-2023 08:57 AM

TASTY though!!... all my childhood romps are dead.

Loved going to that hastings london drugs, buying nick nack crap from that store and then head up to bao chau for a bowl

On their last week of opening. I sauced 5 large ass spring rolls for only $10. The last place where spring rolls that are 2-3x the size are $2 whereas everywhere else it's $3-6 for 1 dinky roll. Bao Chau is good for dry, not so much pho.

supafamous 10-03-2023 09:55 AM

I gotta give props to Hai Phong by Kingsway and Knight - their curry broth is great. Just spicy enough to give you a mild runny nose while you're eating. Used to Doordash it all the time until I moved into Burnaby.

BEST PHO IN GVRD GO !

i like thai son, value is good, broth is good, and noodle / meat ratio is dead on.

Hondaracer 10-03-2023 10:51 AM

For me it’s Petite Saigon in Van and Kim Hoang in Surrey

Don’t ever really go anywhere else unless I’m going for a bowl while at work because I’d rather just go to the 2 aformentioned places

Pho 68 on Edmonds is actually not bad for vermicelli Dishes, the soup kinda sucks though

unit 10-03-2023 11:27 AM

ive been liking pho 37 in richmond. they recently moved to a way bigger location in the same plaza. they actually have great service too which is unusual for a viet restaurant. tons of young staff there.

Qmx323 10-03-2023 01:29 PM

Pho 37 - Sate peanut noodle omg

Lol my Vietnamese brother in law said Thai Son is ok, they are the "McDonalds/fast food of Vietnamese restaurants". He recommends Pho Duy. :)

I found Pho Duy pretty good, a bit on the pricier side but large portions and good quality ingredients. Since they only have 2 items on the menu, I'm sure they've mastered them! Unfortunately their store hours are somewhat limited (10:30am-2:30pm daily except Monday, closed holidays). I've heard they close early once they run out of ingredients.

Personally I also go to Thai Son (Garden City & Alderbridge) with my family of 4 cuz I'm cheap! If I'm feeling generous, I also like Lotus in Richmond (No. 5 & Cambie) but they're more expensive.

Badhobz 10-03-2023 01:44 PM

Prettty sure that pho duy beef is a front for something. Nobody survives on those limited hours and 2 item menus.

I like Mui Ngo Gai on Kingsway/Victoria. Their pho isn't amazing but it's solid and the rest of the menu is full of good stuff. Service is also pretty friendly and the place is clean so suitable for bringing your white friends or your family.

No… everyone thinks I’m a fucking narc

Too gewilo

My buddy got a haircut and they offered him a bj. I’m like first of all where ?!?!! And secondly how much ?!?!

He wouldn’t disclose the location of his haircut place other than it’s along Kingsway but he said bj was 100 bucks. I’m like that’s a smoking deal. FeelsBadMan FeelsBadMan

Curry broth!? I gotta try that. I haven't been there in so long I forgot how it was.

Anyone else judge a Pho place by how they make their cha gio/spring rolls? I'm finding less places make them with rice paper so I've been buying the frozen/half-fried ones at kim chau deli

punkwax 10-04-2023 09:15 AM

There was a pho place in that little strip mall at Kingsway and willingdon that I miss but not for the pho. They had the BEST lemongrass chicken I’ve ever had, hands down.

I’m on mission to find somewhere else that compares. So far, no dice.
