What's wrong with this messaging from Richmond RCMP ... I think it's good to tell people to be situationally aware. Doesn't matter if you cross at a crosswalk ... look both ways! |
It’s that same stupid shit that cyclists get stuck in their head, I was in the right, the car was wrong!!! Yea, well now you’re dead so doesn’t really matter |
The pushback is so dumb. Is it really that hard to just use some common sense to help yourself not get hit by a car when crossing the street? |
People just have that sense of entitlement nowadays, even when it’s pedestrian vs car! |
Yep the people complaining are classic victim mentality, main character syndrome snowflakes. Everything bad happens to them at no fault of their own, and everything good is because of themselves and nobody else. |
It's good that they're promoting that mentality for non drivers, because it doesn't exist all over the world. Not just oblivious drivers, which are everywhere, but the mentality of "I have the right of way, meaning if someone jay walks in front of me, I have the right to run them over". Instead of slowing down, or slowing down and honking, they just wait to see if people/animals can get out of the way before they get there at full speed. Right in front of my house there have been deaths, including dogs and children, the latter because the crosswalk was uncontrolled for a long time, and the speed limits here are insane. /rant |
^ In Asia? I always thought the pedestrians knew the drivers were crazy and not gonna stop. Whereas here in North America, cars/trucks are ranked behind pedestrians and bicycles/scooters (on roads that were designed for vehicular traffic, FFS)... |

Throughout Asia you'd never just take the crosswalk when traffic is approaching, unless there's a red light (and even then you should wait to make sure they stop). Even bus drivers and police cars will just blow through crosswalks with people waiting to cross. Crosswalks are merely suggestions of where you can cross when there's no traffic. In BC, those drivers would get tickets every time. Not sure about the rules in Japan, but the drivers definitely will stop for pedestrians. |
Big house fire in Burnaby, by Edmonds. Fire jumped roofs to multiple houses, firefighters are struggling even in this rain. Make sure you review insurance, and just an FYI Costco is selling home-use fire extinguishers on sale this week. Coincidentally we bought one tonight. I feel so bad for the neighbours who are about to have their lives flipped upside down overnight. |

In this example the driver was also breaking the law, the pedestrian was not. Part 3.1 of the Motor Vehicle Act prohibits the use of hand-held electronic devices while driving." It's comments like these that make it hard to take people seriously these days, it's such a typical internet response from a person who's probably never been told to shut the fuck up in their entire life. The overreaction of something that is clearly just trying to shine a light on a tip that may save your life one day labeled as "disgusting" really makes me wonder what goes through these peoples heads in day to day life. Fuck me it bothers me that people like this exist lol. |

Every post he makes is bitching about something. Wears an N-95 mask in his profile pic cause imagine taking it off for a headshot photo. Boosted up the ass yet says he still got Covid again even though he wears his mask everywhere. Dudes so fucking safe yet he posts this about that video: This is so horrible you should all be fired. Maybe if you showed the pedestrian darting out onto a freeway or something, but in a crosswalk? IT'S NOT THE JOB OF PEDESTRIANS TO BE HYPER-VIGILANT SO THEY CAN LEAP OUT OF THE WAY OF DISTRACTED *MOTORISTS* WHO DON'T FOLLOW THE RULES. Yeah imagine injecting your body with something multiple times cause you're worried about getting sick yet anyone who tells you to look both ways before crossing a street should lose their job. Fucking morons. |

I thought the ad was total bullshit and Richmond RCMP isn't the first police department to produce videos like this where the law abiding person is considered equally at fault for something that's entirely the fault of the driver. This ad was a victim blaming ad - the earphones and the hoodie were the equivalent of telling a rape victim they were asking for it because they wore sexy clothes. Should pedestrians pay attention to their surroundings because drivers are sometimes idiots? Of course but they won't produce an ad showing a pedestrian paying attention and yielding to idiot drivers. The only way the ad here works is to victim blame. The ad that should have been produced is the inattentive driver killing a pedestrian and doing hard time not the ad that blamed the pedestrian for the driver's behaviour. |
^ tell me that you are a millenial or a gen Z without telling me that you're a millenial or gen Z. |
The point of these ads is not to place any blame at the pedestrian. The point of these ads is to say "hey, we don't live in a perfect world, drivers are going to fuck up from time to time, you can help improve your own safety as a pedestrian by being more aware of your surroundings" It's not a difficult concept. |
But but but... why should I have to look out for myself? Everyone is perfect! I spend all my time on my phone even when I'm walking telling everyone how perfect and beautiful they are just the way they are. Except people older than me making systems and decisions and stuff. Ew. |

As a driver the stakes are higher for me when I make a mistake compared to being a cyclist or pedestrian and therefore a greater responsibility lies with me to be attentive and considerate. That video tries to absolve me of what would be 100% my fault. Should pedestrians, cyclists, and drivers all pay attention because mistakes will happen? Of course? You can run an education campaign that doesn't victim blame which is what this ad does - it places equal onus on both driver and pedestrian when one is following the rules and one isn't. They could have easily made a video showing an honest mistake by the driver or of a pedestrian jaywalking at the wrong place to show the consequences of not paying attention. |
K, but I do think your opinion is in the minority and your sensitivities are a little too high ... which is fine. This is what a forum is for, different opinions. I interpreted the video exactly as Great68 summarized. |

Those shared spaces, wider sidewalks, dedicated bike lanes (as needed) are the things that lead to better health, better neighbourhoods, less accidents, healthier businesses etc. We've created so many poorly planned neighbourhoods because of cars - it's crazy how we just handed away so much livability just for cars (~25% of land is used in a city for PARKING SPACES) What the Richmond RCMP did in that video has been what police departments have been doing for years - they are not the first to be so tone deaf by placing the motorist at the top of the pyramid. The same for the media - when they write headlines related to pedestrians and cyclists getting killed by cars it's always described in a passive voice and as an "accident" in the same way they say "officer involved shooting" when a cop shoots someone (No man, the cop shot someone). I walk, cycle and drive - and when I walk or cycle I know I have less rights and will be treated worse than if I drive. We don't need the cops to make videos reminding everyone of that. I love cars and I will never give them up but I know how privileged we are as motorists - we treat cyclists and pedestrians like shit and we've been brainwashed by society about it. |
