Cheers! RCMP proposes licensed mess hall at new headquarters in Surrey

John Daly, Global News : Friday, June 22, 2012 9:46 PM

An application for a liquor licence that's currently under review in Surrey is raising a few eyebrows.

The licenced establishment would be located at the new $260 million RCMP BC headquarters currently under construction in the Green Timbers area.

The mess hall would be open seven days a week and be available to nearly 3,000 employees in a new 76,000 square metre facility.

Surrey city council is considering the RCMP liquor licence which it says is necessary for social functions, formal and informal ceremonies and force traditions.

However, there is a pub less than a mile away and the RCMP liquor application comes as the Cpl. Monty Robinson controversy struggles to a resolution.

It also comes after the West Vancouver Police Department, faced with an officer drinking at the police station, then driving and crashing, brought about a booze ban at police headquarters.

The RCMP says it's liquor service is "event or activity driven" and "strict guidelines developed by the force are closely adhered to."

The application calls for indoor licenced capacity of 1,198 Mounties, with a patio capacity of another 120 outside. However, the RCMP says there would only be seating for about 500 people inside.

The hours of operation would be noon to 2 a.m., according to the application. RCMP say that’s incorrect, and the mess would only be open Wednesday, Thursday and Friday until 11 p.m.

RCMP say anyone at the mess who has had too much to drink would get a free cab ride home.

Fucking hell, who is in charge of amateur hockey in Burnaby? Everywhere I go, there are signs that read, "Female Hockey". Who's the retard? It's "Womens Hockey." Do we call mens hockey, "Male Hockey?"

These signs are up at schools, too. People may think grammar and spelling is not important these days, but at least get signs that go up around schools, right. /rant

Woman's means they are over 18. Female applies to all age groups.

MG1 06-23-2012 09:32 PM

^should be called girls hockey.

Anyway, someone screwed it up somewhere and now there are leagues called female hockey leagues..... still the majority are called womens hockey and girls hockey. Just like mens hockey and boys hockey leagues. I bet there's a male hockey league out there somewhere..... par for the course. The Engrish language ain't the same no more, LOL.

Staff at the Galapagos National Park in Ecuador say Lonesome George, a giant tortoise believed to be the last of its subspecies, has died.

Scientists estimate he was about 100 years old.

Park officials said they would carry out a post-mortem to determine the cause of his death.

With no offspring and no known individuals from his subspecies left, Lonesome George became known as the rarest creature in the world.

For decades, environmentalists unsuccessfully tried to get the Pinta Island tortoise to reproduce with females from a similar subspecies on the Galapagos Islands.

Park officials said the tortoise was found dead in his corral by his keeper of 40 years, Fausto Llerena.

While his exact age was not known, Lonesome George was estimated to be about 100, which made him a young adult as the subspecies can live up to an age of 200.

Galapagos icon

Lonesome George was first seen by a Hungarian scientist on the Galapagos island of Pinta in 1972.

Environmentalists had believed his subspecies (Chelonoidis nigra abingdoni) had become extinct.

Lonesome George became part of the Galapagos National Park breeding programme.

After 15 years of living with a female tortoise from the nearby Wolf volcano, Lonesome George did mate, but the eggs were infertile.

He also shared his corral with female tortoises from Espanola island, which are genetically closer to him than those from Wolf volcano, but Lonesome George failed to mate with them.

He became a symbol of the Galapagos Islands, which attract some 180,000 visitors a year.

Hunted to extinction

Galapagos National Park officials said that with George's death, the Pinta tortoise subspecies has become extinct.

They said his body would probably be embalmed to conserve him for future generations.

Tortoises were plentiful on the Galapagos islands until the late 19th century, but were later hunted for their meat by sailors and fishermen to the point of extinction.

Their habitat furthermore suffered when goats were introduced from the mainland.

The differences in appearance between tortoises from different Galapagos islands were among the features which helped the British naturalist Charles Darwin formulate his theory of evolution.

Some 20,000 giant tortoises of other subspecies still live on the Galapagos.

TSA agent opens jar of man's ashes, spills them on the floor, then 'stands and laughs' as grandson scrambles to gather them up | Mail Online

‘She didn't apologize. She started laughing. I was on my hands and knees picking up bone fragments.
'I couldn't pick up all, everything that was lost. I mean, there was a long line behind me.’
Gross later found out that TSA rules state that staff should not tamper with human remain containers under any circumstance.
Instead they are supposed to put them through an X-ray machine.
Nothing can be done to regain the ashes. But Gross said he wants an apology from the TSA and from the individual agent 'who opened the jar and laughed at me'.
