..... bah, hang on. why is posting media so hard in this place

@quasi, i thought I might as well balance out the discussion with my biased POV. I stayed local for school, loved it, and will encourage all 3 of my kids to do the same. I also spent 2 years away for my second job (a few years out of school).

To me, the balance is between expediting maturity in the form of chores, being on time, etc vs the possibility of negative influences, and maybe selfishly, where they choose to raise their family.

There are always edge cases, like the kid who stays local and never grows up because their parents do everything for them, or the kid who goes away and does drugs and has 3 baby mommas..

I don't believe its necessary to move away to develop maturity and discipline, and I think there are some interesting risks involved with sending your kids away depending on the college, the culture, and your own values.

You know your kid best and what they would benefit from, good luck!

Sure, but they weren't compelling people to give their used cup back.

They know it will get thrown out... Personal rights trumps doing things legally.
Eby keeps saying on how bad these bad people do but never on the protocols.

again, I'm getting all these from articles on Pac Press so it might be bias.

All in all, boss tells you to do it, you do it... catch them first, screw them over their flow and deal with the legal stuff later.

Cops knew it's illegal but when top down says just do it... do it.

this kinda sounds like they were, depending on what you consider to be compelling.

But when that didn’t yield a breakthrough, police devised a new plan to obtain DNA without permission. They would secretly collect DNA at a Kurdish New Year celebration, known as Newroz, at Burnaby’s Barnet Marine Park on March 25, 2018, the recordings revealed.

An RCMP officerexplained the operation to the B.C. Supreme Court in November 2022 calling it an “incentive-based scenario.”

“The specific scenario was a taste test of tea,” the officer told the court.

He said officers dressed as market researchers for a tea company and roamed around the Newroz celebration, offering free samples. He said the participants were also given Tim Hortons gift cards.

“I believe it was a $5 gift card, but I can’t be certain on the amount,” the officer said.

“The participants (who) elected to participate in this event, (and) it was entirely voluntary, could elect to provide personal information which would further give them the possibility of being entered into some form of contest or sweepstakes. This, again, was voluntary.”

But participants were never told the tea company was fake and the entire process was designed solely to allow police to obtain their DNA and identities.

The officer said the cups were “individually and uniquely numbered” so police could later match DNA on the cups with names on the contest forms.

"Entirely Voluntary" and "Compelled" are literally opposites in their meaning

Eby used to be on the Civil Liberties side, so it makes his comments even more two faced.

Or, maybe he is older and wiser, less ideal now. He knows that reality is a bit grayer ... and sometimes, the end justifies the means.

I couldn't keep watching, every time he said "finger"... I kept waiting for him to say "bang" instead of "board" and having this "Yahhhhhh... oh no... not this time" feeling, it got too intense after awhile.

Looking for recommendations for window replacements.

Looking to do the whole house.

Centra? Lifelong? West Coast Windows?

Hondaracer 01-18-2024 01:50 PM

Do NOT go with that window company that advertises on TV, renewal by Andersen or whatever lol they are the biggest fucking scam running. I’ve met 3 seperate people who used them, all 3 have the exact same story, a basic window replacement was $5000 after some long winded BS story lol, it’s like they work off a script.

If you’re looking at vinyl windows, Starline makes the best vinyl windows in BC imo. And they have great techs, great quality control etc. know quite a few people involved there

It's funny you mention them because they brought me their flyer and I said absolutely not.

Hondaracer 01-18-2024 02:05 PM

Friends who live around the corner used them and it was fucking hilarious as their commercials show these white guys their “professional” technicians etc. they obviously use almost exclusively contractors.

So the day rolls around for the window replacement and 3 Mexican guys show up from “Andersen” who barely spoke English, they start cutting out the window and realize it’s some fucked up window anchored into the structure of the home. Long story short a 5 hour jog ended up taking 5 days because they destroyed the inside drywall as well as the kitchen backsplash simply getting the old window out lol. Fucking clowns

I’ve also heard stories of them going door to door and when a woman answers they tell her “maybe you should consult with your husband when he’s home”

:lol

Great68 01-18-2024 02:32 PM

Sounds like my experience with "Leaf Filter Gutter" people.

Local reps are just some salesperson working out of their car, and some nobody contractor for installation.

Much better to go to the installation contractor directly.

I used Thermal King here on the island for a few various windows. They used Thermoproof windows, also manufactured here on the island (Cobble Hill). I'm happy with both the quality of installation (which was completely problem free and seamless) and the windows themselves.

So I just found out there used to be a prison in Burnaby where my friend used to live.

https://globalnews.ca/video/5221954/...oakalla-prison

Called Oakalla Prison, it was located in the middle of where present day Oakmount Crescent is. Opened in 1912 and closed in 1991. Over 44 prisoners executed. A riot and escape in the 80s.

I know most of RS was probably too young, but anyone remember it?

EvoFire 01-18-2024 09:36 PM

Wow, I used to just live down the road

Razor Ramon HG 01-18-2024 09:48 PM

Yeah, a lot of the houses there now were built between 1994 to 1998 from comparing cross-referencing satellite imagery and BC Assessment information.

https://burnaby.maps.arcgis.com/apps...81d6976e2b47dc

I feel like a lot of people that live there now or have lived there didn't know either. My friend sure didn't, lol.
