The platform is, also shared with the Mazda 3, The drivetrain is unique, and probably some of the electronics as well.

Same Ford Global C1 platform (Euro Focus, Mazda 3, CX7 etc), yeah, but Volvo used their own bespoke engines.

Anyone?
Depends on whether the RockAuto axles are quality.
On Subaru and manual Acura models, OEM are really your only option

The later gen versions of that platform are what I'd probably want to own

the Mazda 3s with the Skyactiv engine and transmission and the S60 with the Aisin 8 speed shared with BMW/Lexus

I don't have any experience with older Volvos so I don't have any input regarding reliability with something from the Ford era. I would just go visit SwedeSpeed if you haven't already to get a gauge on reliability / repairability.

From personal experience on my newer car, parts are affordable for a "premium" brand but accessing parts can be a challenge (which translates to higher labor costs at a shop/dealer if you go that route for repairs). For example, my fuse box is located under the passenger floor carpet (which requires lifting the carpet up after removing some door trim), and the air cabin filter is only accessible from the passenger footwell which requires removing a few mounts (not accessible from the glove box). Neither task is difficult, but it's a lot more work than looking under the dashboard for the fuse box or opening the glove box to access the filter with my other cars.

I see they've kept the stupid cabin filter location from the Ford era. My MS3 had it in the same place.

It's just a platform thing. I can't imagine it would have been terribly cost effective for Volvo to design their own bespoke HVAC unit which will only fit in their S40's.

It's not even that bad, like I did mine in 2 hours just because I was learning exactly what to do.

After that I did my mom's CAF on her 06 Mazda 3 in under half an hour

That's still pretty tedious for a cabin filter, the longest part of doing one on my Toyotas has been putting all the junk back into the glove box.

On my 9-5, SAAB hid the cabin filter behind the glovebox, behind the carpet behind the dash.
Spoiler!

I love my Swedish shitboxes. They're safe and don't feel like tin cans while on the highway. I felt that my SAAB felt sturdier than my Volvo.

yray and Matsuda have owned Volvos too.

The 5 speed and 6 speed on the S40/V50/C30/C70 feel like Mazda shifters - surprisingly good, direct but not notchy. Very easy to drive stick or teach someone stick.

They drive about what you expect of a compact executive car from the mid 00s.

The 2.4 non turbo is slow but torquey. T5 engine has meaty, girthy torque.

Seats aren't the best on these P1 Volvos, but the other models have really comfy seats - good for a road trip and my back.

If you want to mod your Volvo, ipd and FCP Euro have aftermarket parts.

IMO it's not really worth getting the S40, unless it's a T5 or manual. These came in FWD and AWD. If you find an AWD T5 with manual, those are actually worth putting money into.

This is pretty wacked ... stolen cars are being sold at dealers and even they can't tell.

Just bought a used car? There's a chance it's stolen, as thieves exploit weakness in vehicle registrations

https://www.cbc.ca/news/canada/toron...nada-1.7181257

Derek Crocker bought a used Ford F-150 pickup truck from a dealership in Toronto in 2022. Just a few months later, his own investigation revealed the truck's vehicle identification number — or VIN — had been replaced, mirroring the VIN of a similar truck registered in Utah.

Was driving home tonight around 10pm and saw the gas stations at 12th and Clarke in Vancouver all advertising gas at 1.94 / L

Traffic everywhere. I almost hit some idiot as they were u-turning around the divider

The nearest gas station (Husky eastbound near Lakewood) was advertised at 2.01 / L

My car needed gas but not that badly...
