So I inadvertently bullied someone on Reddit into deleting their post...

Lady posts in r/personalfinancecanada about her friend buying a 2024 Chevy Blazer and getting a 7.99%/72 month term on it and she's kinda freaking out about how her friend has been ripped off so I reply with:

"Not an unusual rate right now. I’d be more concerned about her terrible taste in cars."

It ends up being the most upvoted comment of all (not sure if b/c people think she should have bought a beige Corolla or that they know the Blazer is a shit car) and a few hours later the post is deleted.

Sometimes I really am a jerk.

Now you have to post in "Am I The Asshole?" :troll:

My instant reaction (from reading your post) was -- was that an ICE Blazer? or the Blazer EV?

Apparently the EV is quite the POS -- the vehicle is quite new, but it already has a number of not very good recalls on it. And on top of that, the SUV appears to be fairly buggy still.

The Honda Prologue EV is a rebadged Blazer. I bet a lot of casual buyers wouldn't know that...

radeonboy 07-04-2024 01:41 PM

Considering the car choice of PFC is a 20yr old beige Corolla, you shouldn't be surprised to get all those upvotes.

Though I'm not sure there are enough Beige Corollas out there if all of PFC / PF bought one.

Far as I could tell, she was talking about the ICE one and even that one is a bit of a turd relative to the market - other than looks and big discounts there's no reason to get that over a CR-V or a RAV4 (or any compact SUV). (Car and Driver has it ranked #27 in its class)

Of course the EV one is much worse of a car than the ICE one. That one is seemingly terrible.

Fuckin government is trying to make me buy those EV Blazers for every SUV I replace, I keep saying no fuck off but they're pushing it from the Director level down so hard... it's such a piece of shit, total waste of taxpayers money.

I can certainly understand the desire to convert the gov fleet to EVs. So is there any other viable e-SUV that you can realistically recommend?

We need to save our stupid govs from wasting our hard-earned dollars on POS vehicles...

You cant stop the govt from burning money.

My god im turning into hondaracer

radeonboy 07-04-2024 08:37 PM

Why are they pushing the Blazer EV when the Equinox EV is cheaper? And what are these vehicles being used for anyway?

We can only buy what PSPC gets tenders for and order directly from manufacturers, not from dealerships... obviously the manufacturers don't give us popular vehicles at a discount, so they offer up all the shit they can't sell. They're used for any manner of things from general people moving to science to FSR driving etc... mostly I buy trucks. I don't really want to say what dept I buy for so I can't be too specific, but mostly we do F-250's and F-350 type vehicles which there is no green alternative for currently.

Right now things I can buy as commuter or personnel type vehicles:
Outlander PHEV
Wrangler PHEV up until like 2 weeks ago and it suddenly disappeared
Blazer EV
Lightning in multiple ranges
BZ4X

I try to avoid green categories right now or find reasons to upgrade/downgrade specs to avoid categories with them until better stuff is more widely available. Not against green, just against buying useless shitty vehicles. We also don't currently have in-house charging at almost any office through the province and if you've ever leased an office, which most are, you would know that leasors do not take kindly to you plugging in vehicles anywhere on the premises. I've bought a few of the Outlander PHEV, it's not that bad.

Government doesn't consider Hybrids like the Prius or Highlander or whatnot to be "green" anymore either so that really limits choices.

Traum 07-05-2024 08:32 AM

It's a shame that there are no easy in-house charging options available. I pass by Burnaby City Hall often enough, and every time pass through their EV charging lot on Deer Lake, I feel like that's what all levels of gov and police forces should be doing with the vehicle fleet.

I know someone that regularly drives his Lightning to and from Oliver, often towing a big trailer as well. He told me the trip is not troublesome at all, as long as you keep your speeds no higher than 100km/h. But I suppose FSR would be more difficult when there are few / no charging options available.

EvoFire 07-05-2024 08:40 AM

The Outlander PHEV is not a terrible car in a vacuum. IMO would work well for a city vehicle. Without a reliable source of power, none of the cars really make sense, though I'd think quite a few employees would be happy if you guys managed to get a fleet of Wrangler PHEVs, at the detriment of the maintenance staff. There is a problem with optics of a bunch of city employees driving around in a Wrangler. Some one without knowledge of anything would complain.

68style 07-05-2024 08:55 AM

The Lightning doesn't work for almost anything we do, it's only a half tonne... we need 3/4 or 1 tonne... regularly towing anywhere from 10-20k lbs

We only have 1 and it's the lower range battery, all that was available at the time and they forced us to buy one... or rather Ottawa sent one to us... in the winter time it has trouble doing much more than 140km, it's kinda sad.

I agree none of those are good options given the context. EVs have their purpose in a fleet and I've worked in environments where they make sense (lots of idling in a confined geographical area), but operating them on FSRs is a poor fit, especially if there's no easy access to fast charging.

In the end fleet vehicles still need to fit their purpose. Forcing EVs into situations they're not designed just seems incredibly shortsighted...

Any recent CAN-US cell plans that are sub $50? New sign upworks too.

TOS'd 07-05-2024 09:34 AM

Also another question, has anyone used a Faxing service online? There are so many online ones but are they trustworthy or should I go into a UPS/Staples instead?

Rogers was doing $45 for father's day CAN-US and 50GB iirc. My phone isn't 5G so there wasn't any point and I went to Fido for the $29 20GB plan.
