I booked through the sketchiest Chinese portal for a flight from Vancouver to Regina. It was half the price of what WestJet was offering on the website, and it was linked via Google Flights.

Had no issues with the actual company delivering me my tickets. Everything worked properly on the WestJet portal.

WestJet cancelled my flight tho. Fuck WestJet.

Back when I was a student I rolled the dice many a time booking through 3rd party sites. I've done quite a few of the big ones, Expedia, Cheapoair, Flighthub, Priceline etc. I think the major ones are really owned by one company anyway (Expedia?).

Luckily I've never been burned and never had an issue before but you do hear of horror stories here and there. I'd still consider if your travel isn't super time-critical like having to attend an event or wedding etc. That way, if there are issues you still have time to sort things out. Its the wait times having to contact the agency, then sorting out new flights if something goes awry. Ultimately, I think everyone gets where they need to go but the airlines can and do say "don't talk to us, talk to your agency" if you need assistance.

https://wapo.st/3WcJBul (gift link) This is fucked up. I watched the body cam video and there's absolutely no reason for what happened nor was there even a reason for the cop to have his hand on his gun.

that link looks sus, i'm afraid to click :lol

This is so fxxked up. How do BIPOC people in the US even have any faith in the police at all? You call them for help, and they'll just open fire on you, aiming for the head no less?

Makes me kind of wish that Illinois hadn't abolished the death penalty...

Damn ... tragic stories coming out of Jasper ... significant structural damage to the resort town, hotels, and neighbourhoods !

CivicBlues 07-25-2024 08:37 AM

Heartbreaking. Jasper has a special place for us as it was the first road trip we took after the first COVID travel restrictions were lifted in summer 2020. So serene and uncrowded too compared to the big hitters in nearby Banff but nonetheless just as beautiful.

supafamous 07-25-2024 10:52 AM

I last visited Jasper 12 years ago and it was such an incredibly beautiful place. I was talking about going up there next Spring with my wife just a few days ago. Really sad to see what's happened there.

CivicBlues 07-25-2024 11:28 AM

Fuck, just heard the Fairmont Jasper Park Lodge burned down. That place was really cool, it wasn't like any of the other Fairmont hotels, they made it look a camping lodge and the rooms were like individual cabins but still 4-5 star accommodations. We had dinner there for my wife's Birthday. :(

Last year it was Lahaina, Maui burning down and now this. All these holiday memories just going up in smoke.

Oof. I stayed there when I visited and while the rooms themselves were outdated the grounds were incredible. I had dinner outside one night and a caribou walked right up to me - that trip was one of the most memorable things I did.

Badhobz 07-25-2024 12:56 PM

Argh you gotta be kidding me. That was Fairmont’s best one other than maybe lake Louise.

westopher 07-25-2024 01:32 PM

Jasper is my favourite place in the world. It's the first place I tell new visitors to go when travelling through Canada. I must have well over 100 trips there over the years. Fucking terrible. I hope it isn't as bad as it seems.

Well my bad, it looks like the reports of Fairmont Jasper Park Lodge's destruction were greatly exaggerated. At least for now.

Jasper Park Lodge reports most structures 'standing and intact' amid wildfire

Hondaracer 07-25-2024 05:03 PM

They had some fire experts and BC forestry people on the radio talking and they said Jasper is actually one of the best prepared “fire safe” communities in Canada

Not much you can do however when 100 foot flames sweep in at 15 meters a minute I think they said. Kinda scary to think that even a place like Kamloops etc. which is more dessert than forest could very well go up if embers and shit start falling on homes and you can’t control the structure fires

Anyone ask for more pay after going onto partners health benefits?

Ex: my company has 3$/hr worth of health benefits.
I go onto gfs health benefits.
Company no longer needs to pay 3$ worth of health benefits.
Ask company for difference?

Is this a thing?

underscore 07-25-2024 06:01 PM

I think it would depend if they can actually opt you out or not.

Usually with other companies I’ve worked for there was an option to opt out completely at the beggining of the calendar year and they would tell you the difference you’d realize in terms of pay by opting out

Other companies that have spending accounts etc. for your health care it seems like you generally cannot opt out

This is one that I'm happy you were wrong on.

Do we need a 2024 Olympics thread?

More news coming out regarding Canada's Women Soccer team AND Men's Soccer team about spying on practices, going back to 2021. Women's head coach suspended for rest of Olympics.

Fuck that sucks Fairmount Jasper was one my bucket list to visit, I've heard it's better value-wise then Fairmount Lake Louise.

Guess that's out the window.

EDIT: NM, damn you Civic.
