Lots of old men in Richmond into birding, they come out with their canons of cameras on the Dyke.

Do you have any recommendations for binoculars, or have advice on how to find the right pair? Most of my use will be urban settings and some local trails. Thanks in advance.

Vortex is good, but look at some Zeiss models. we're talking $1K here. don't go more than 10x though.

i'm a photographer though, not a "birder". so take that for what its worth.

i use a monocular, a Bushnell(Fieldscope Legend Ultra Hd), to get a look before i bother with attempting to photograph.

the comment about old guys birding is pretty close, but there's a lot more old school lesbians that are into it.

Isn't Reifel Migratory Bird Sanctuary on Westham Island the place to go for local bird watching?

I love watching and interacting with the sandhill cranes. As long as it isn't nesting season, they are super gentle and graceful.

i have the cheapest celestron monocular that i sometimes take hiking with me. it's shakey af, really hard to spot anything with, and has horrible optics, but it's still good as a starter since it's so cheap, and can get you into the hobby to see if you actually enjoy doing it at all. for like $20 i think it's still pretty decent to get your foot in the door.

asian food in the states is so crap compared to what we have here other than some exceptions (viet or korean food in LA)

went to bellingham and had viet food. place is called soy house which is already sus in itself, it should be like pho ngoc thuy or at least pho saigon, not 'soy house'.

not an asian server in sight, all white girls and a few mixed looking people. service by a white girl was way over the top friendly and engaging... i prefer someone to just come and not even make eye contact and scribble a few things on their notepad and go away. got checked up on too many times during dinner to ask how things are tasting and if i needed more water, etc..

bill comes $21 per bowl, plus 20% tip and now i've just paid $70 CAD for two bowls of mid tasting veggie pho.

when people come to vancouver on holiday they must think shit is so crazy cheap here

I have my old man hobbies already mapped out in my mind.

1. Plane spotting. I already do this tbh, but when I retire I can do it more.

2. Flight sim in the basement. Related to the above. Right now there's no time or money to build a flight sim but it's in the cards.

3. Perhaps some kind of model train building is another thing I'm considering.

4. Golf, but only executive courses.

5. General home maintenance.

Warning: any type of model building/collecting can take up a lot of room!

The joke I hear is that when a man turns 40 they either get really into WW2 or into smoking meats. I chose the latter.

re: Plane spotting - I'm near the flight path that goes over BCIT and my 5 year old and I love watching them come in. Got to see a 747-400 the other day which is a rare sight.

They're moving the flight path further north soon so this dad and daughter activity is going away which will be sad.

Darth Vader, Mufasa, Terence Mann of Field of Dreams ... has died. Unmistakable voice and a legend!

I got into Napoleonic warfare. Tabletop gaming. Hand painted everything from scratch (Airfix HO scale) I had every regiment that participated in the Battle of Waterloo. Everything from the Swiss Militia to Prussian Lancers. Lots of modifications since a lot of the regiments, especially cavalry, were not available from Airfix back then. Head dress, helmets, etc. Flags and banners made from toothpaste tubes, 'cause back then they were made from light metal (very flexible and easy to paint), not plastic like they are now.

Then dropped that altogether and got into WWII stuff, in particular, 1/32 scale, German Armour and 1/350 IJN ships.

I do have quite a few cast micro amour pieces. Again, for tabletop gaming. I remember soaking the pieces in vinegar to allow primer and paint to stick to the metal (releasing agent?). Disintegrated some because I left them soaking in vinegar for way too long.

I got into Gundam models for a while. I have enough hobbies and interests to last me three lifetimes. My lifetime hobby has, and always will be, philately. Started when I was in elementary school.

If all things go well with current gf, I may have the opportunity to learn about home renos from her folks. would definitely come in handy for later when I can actually afford a townhouse or something lol. I think I've always wanted to learn more in this area but simply haven't had the time or guidance for it. Being the resourceful old fart who knows how to fix/build things is for sure something I'd take pride in.

Badhobz 09-09-2024 07:53 PM

So i watched that apple event today and really none of their new products are even remotely enticing. iPhone 16 / 16 pro only adds a half ass shutter button and a speed bump. My 14pro never feels slows so I’m wondering who needs this new one.

God jobs must be spinning in this grave

I used to trade up every year, but I'm so far off the upgrade cycle now that these announcements don't mean much to me. I'll probably need to upgrade my Series 4 watch this cycle - the battery doesn't really last the day anymore.

Hondaracer 09-09-2024 08:16 PM

Currently have a 13 pro max, nothing wrong with it but I think it’s probably time to upgrade. The camera additions and AI are a big enough step up to finally justify it I think

I think their AI integration has some good potential going forward from the little they showed today

Badhobz 09-09-2024 08:26 PM

But it’s all coming SOOooooNnnnn. I hate it when they release these half baked bullshit products. Use case scenarios are also kinda lame for their so called AI.

There’s gonna be that one weirdo who has a full on conversation with Siri now at the mall / bus stop / workplace. Nobody needs to hear that shit you goof

It's become almost entirely about the camera the last 5-7 years - if photos matter to you the advances in the camera tech are really impressive. Beyond that a lot of people can go 5 years without an upgrade just fine.

I'm at 4 years now with a 12 Pro and while a lot of the new tech isn't that exciting for me the new camera will be a huge upgrade for me.

bcrdukes 09-09-2024 10:32 PM

dafuq. I'm still using an iPhone SE (Gen 1) and here you guys are bitching about the latest phone? GTFO here! :seriously:

Next Stock and Noob Meets will be all done via AI. None of us will meet in person. :alone:

Badhobz 09-10-2024 12:11 AM

The camera barely changed in the 16 pro. They only added a 48mb ultra wide sensor. That ultra wide isn’t something I use everyday but I guess it’s okay. Why didn’t they just add the same sensor to the 5x telephoto as well ? (Probably saving it for the 17pro)

unit 09-10-2024 07:00 AM

i still have my XS, 6 year old phone.
i find the camera to be fine except i wish it had a wider lens. also this phone doesnt even have magsafe which i think i would like. other than that, it's still fast?
i find it hard to justify upgrading. i told myself i would upgrade on the 14, then 15, now 16 and i still might wait for 17.

bcrdukes 09-10-2024 07:11 AM

I'm cancelling my wireless subscription at the end of the year and switching to rotary telephone service.

Badhobz 09-10-2024 07:14 AM

i really want to use an old starlink flip cellphone. I dont think it'll work on the carriers though...

its so small and had such great battery life. Hell if i could use my og moto razr that would be great too. I customized the shit outta that phone.

kids be like WTF Is T9 input!?
