Make a booking unless you want to be there waiting for 4 hours for the afternoon ferry. Morning is dicey as well. Bookings are something like at least a week out though last time we tried to go to the island.

unit 10-02-2024 11:32 AM

how is this even a question. make a reservation!!

red kryptonite 10-02-2024 12:12 PM

Don’t risk it during the holiday hahaha

GLOW 10-02-2024 12:17 PM

my time/mental health is more important than $20 both ways to make a reso. i'm so paranoid of the ferries even with a reso i'm usually the 1st or 2nd car in line waiting.

underscore 10-02-2024 01:02 PM

A reso is just a little annoying coming from here cause one accident on the Coq and you're screwed. Or my car decides to be a problem child again. I just booked the latest one I'd want to take and if I get there earlier see if they'll bump me up like they sometimes do.

Great68 10-02-2024 01:55 PM

Yeah it sucks when you can't guarantee traffic conditions and you're coming from far away.
I've heard of people booking multiple reservation slots and just eating the charge in case they're not sure that they can make a specific sailing.

I can't remember the last time I haven't reserved when driving over. I like to just sit my car most trips and having a reso gives you much higher chance of getting on the upper deck.

I'm coming to the mainland for thanksgiving and I booked my reservation 2 weeks ago lol.

Eff-1 10-02-2024 02:02 PM

I got a door ding and the other person was found liable. It's just a chip but I'm wondering if ICBC will still do cash payouts instead of repairs? I know that was an option many years ago but not sure if still is.

supafamous 10-02-2024 02:02 PM

BC Ferries is gently increasing the percentage of spots that can be reserved as well so it's getting harder and harder to just drive on. Years ago I spoke with a project manager at BC Ferries who said they were working on going to reservations as the default way to book (and people who didn't reserve would be charged more). That was 7-8 years ago and I've seen nothing on that so I bet they decided there was too much money to be made selling reservations so they killed that project.

There’s a $5 reservation change fee so if something happens you can just call and bump it to your new ETA.

Definitely make a reso!

Hondaracer 10-02-2024 02:27 PM

The whole system re: ferrys is so stupid

As well all the shit about like the window you can arrive in. They won’t honor a reso if you show up more than 60 minutes early? Like fuck off

underscore 10-02-2024 02:38 PM

I made resos but the return is kinda shitty. I would've booked earlier but I didn't know for sure I was going til last night. Is there a way to be notified if there's availability on a previously sold out sailing or do I just have to keep checking?

I've never done it so how does that work if the later sailings are sold out?

I suppose in that case you’d be f’ed

What are you talking about?

You don't lose your reservation if you show up more than 60 minutes early. Either they'll offer you boarding on the earlier ferry if there's space (of course not with reservation boarding priorty because that's not the ferry you orignally reserved for) OR they'll ask you to wait outside the terminal until your window opens. It's because they need to make the dedicated reservation lanes for your sailing and it's only an issue when they're running hourly sailings.

Yea.. so you get turned away wait and then you’re at the back of the line again

Read the wording when you make a reservation, it makes no sense. Thankfully I’ve been able to show up within the windows previously but if you were turned away say, on a long weekend at horseshoe bay for the Sunshine Coast ferry you would be -fucked- you literally could not get back to the booth by the time the sailing occurred.

Are you talking about the ticket booth line? So like maybe realize you're going to be there early and stop on the way to hold yourself up for a few minutes, maybe chill out at the brake check? Like seriously manage your time better.

I get to Tsawwassen more than 60 ahead all the time. The vast majority of times I get on the earlier boat, the ONE time I had to wait I pulled into the pedestrian lot and waited for 20 minutes and got back to the booth line. No Bid Deal. It does not take more than 30 minutes to get back through the booths from there even on the busiest day.

So Tsawwassen is one thing, what you’re suggesting is not possible at Horsehoe bay.

Any long weekend in the summer you could be backed up 45+ minutes into the highway with no opportunity to even get to the ticket booth.

why do these look like 10x bigger than the measurements lol

underscore 10-03-2024 11:42 AM

I managed to get a better reservation so now I have two booked for the one way. Since I only paid the $20 fee up front which doesn't appear to be refundable, does it actually make a difference if I cancel the extra one vs leaving it as a backup option and no-showing?

Can anyone recommend a budget polisher and pad setup? I'm thinking about trying my hand at polishing my B pillars that have been scratched to hell.

Apparently there was another earthquake at around 2:09 am this morning. I slept through this one too.
