Yea that’s barely a job though lol.. great gig for seniors social interaction and getting exercise outdoors.

I have zero desire to stay employed when I retire, in any capacity. I have the best job I’ve ever had right now, the most chill, most flexible, most time off, hybrid, best pay etc etc. and it’s only good enough that I don’t hate going in everyday lol

There is no job I could see myself having that I would enjoy over just having time to myself to do whatever I want whenever I want. Sitting at home on my ass sounds a lot better than having to be somewhere at a certain time, even if it was only 1-2 days a week lol

The older generation though so many of them work is their life, their only social interaction etc. that routine is essentially what props them up and a big reason why so many die shortly after retiring

(Semi)-retirement is certainly possible - we could maintain our current pretty comfortable lifestyle with me only making $50-60k/yr. That could be as little as a couple consulting gigs a year or some desk job somewhere. I ultimately just have a short term cash flow problem b/c I'm sitting on a future payout (high 6 figures) in a few years that will pay off the house completely and leave me sitting pretty.

This has been a really helpful convo as I think I just assumed that I should just grab some smaller job and call it a day but there really are other options for me and ways of thinking about things I hadn't considered. You all have got my wheels turning a lot and I'm really glad that there's a group of folks like that I can talk this out with.

Oof that feels familiar. I'm sitting on a similar payout, but in order to access it, I have to keep flying out to Montreal 3 days a week for the next 4+ years. It's been tough being away from my wife and kid half the week every week, and it'll be that much harder when the 2nd kid arrives (which is in a couple weeks from now, holy fuck).

I always said that I would quit my job and just be a stay at home Dad when we left California, but it turns out I'm not so brave when I'm staring down the barrel of such a massive loss lol.

Upvote for RS being great. Y'all are some thoughtful-ass inspiring mfkers that I'm constantly learning from.

Except for westopher fuck you you're wrong about the G35 :lol

when I first started my career, my classmates and I joked that we should get some fast food jobs just so we could give rude customers shit to their faces and not care if we got fired for it. could revisit that idea in retirement years for shits and giggles :lol

obviously a big ol' waste of time doing that but the idea still sounds satisfying to some degree :considered:

This is fckd. Guy buys an Ferrari SF 90 for 700K. His payments are 10K a month. Now wants to trade it in for a vette because he can't afford it. His car is only worth 400K now.

That is really tough, I'm sorry to hear that. Pre-kid I never understood what it was like for parents to be away from their families and now I HATE being away. I had a counterpart who flew into Vancouver almost every 2nd week 3 days at a time for nearly 2 years while he had a toddler and I didn't understand how big a sacrifice it was for him to do that - he's now semi-retired in his mid-40s so I guess the company did pay him back for it.

The only good part about work travel is when I get home and my kid is over the moon excited to see me. I'm her Elsa and Anna wrapped in one for a couple mins.

I've only done it once, I went away to work in Sask. for 3 months, came back only once in that three month period and my son was 6 at that time. Sometimes we gotta do what we gotta do but I wouldn't do that again.

Who the fuck buys these things on credit ?!?!?!? Like what kind of interest rates are you paying. Jesus Christ. People are idiots.

underscore 10-18-2024 07:48 PM

3 months is brutal. I do a lot of shorter trips now, usually 4-7 days with the odd 10-14 in there. The short ones are alright but the longer ones suck now that I have kids.

This rain is nuts. If we were in our old house I would have started setting up water barriers to prevent this flood from getting into my crawl space.

yray 10-18-2024 08:20 PM

Today I received my first ever Fortis Gas bill. $135 for approx 5 weeks.

What's a normal amount to pay for gas? We have two gas fireplaces we use occasionally, gas furnace and gas hot water tank. The furnace is quite old and I'm guessing not very efficient, but the house seems decently insulated and our windows were updated.
