I was also suprised how some of the things people point out as negatives on the GR Corolla exist on this too but I've never heard them mentioned. Maybe I just haven't been paying attention. | aye its sad to say, but its probably the best relatively affordable hatch back that still has that old school hot hatch feel. Both the GR and CTR are wayyy too much money for the price. Closest would be the GR86. But it doesnt have the same suite of techno crap that the GTI has, and monthly it seems to be more money even on the base model. Heck, even the civic SI is more money per month and its wayy less dynamic than the GTI.
If i had to do it all again, id probably still pick the GTI and still pick it with a stick as anything past 2024 will be DSG only. The stick isnt great, but you can potentially make it a lot better with the various shift kits thats on the market.
You get used to the crappy UI. It automatically pairs to apple carplay or android auto and it makes the whole thing pretty easy for navigation. The only hiccup for me are the heated seats which you gotta press on the screen and its sometimes a bit laggy to respond. So you have to listen for the bops. Press the button, hear the bop, then you know its on. When you wanna turn it off, you gotta press it 3 times and listen for the bop each time as visually there is a bit of a lag.
Climate i just leave it on auto and forget it. Its set to 21'C and it sorts it out just fine.

Maybe I just haven't been paying attention. | That powered recline but everything else manual thing has been going on since the Mk5 IIRC. The higher trims have full power driver's seats available.
The GR Corolla gets more flack for the interior shortcomings because it costs so much more, while offering less usability in terms of interior space.

The current SI is a super niche product right now.

The GR was pretty mid in city, SI is boring and overpriced, CTR is too expensive
Heated seats + Steering wheel are a dialog button, no screens!

Heated seats + Steering wheel are a dialog button, no screens! | IMO VN, Mini, S2k, Miata are my city picks - they're fun at any speed
This is gonna sound crazy but the S650 Mustang, V8 Challenger, and Mustang Mach E also have a ton of feel/fun in city.

i drove it!
dark forced me to drive it... it was a riot.
The transmission was pretty laggy though, not sure whats up with that. I thought it was a DCT.
It makes loud ass farts and is completely unrefined. Quite fun!

This is gonna sound crazy but the S650 Mustang, V8 Challenger, and Mustang Mach E also have a ton of feel/fun in city. | Miata is pretty sick but once you get the S2K power band it's way more fun in the city, feels like a video game and you feel something when you finally get power.
VN makes you feel like a ricer but you can turn off the exhaust so that's nice.
Mini imo, felt good for a tiny economy car, but I didn't drive the JCW or 200hp+ model.
I loved the S550 Mustang V8 in the city, it's fast but you feel like you're saucing it going sub 150 - 160KM Pulls. The 911, you're doing 200KM+ without feeling much. Quote:

When I drove the GTI/R, I thought DSG was more fun than manual which was the first time I switched to the dark side. The shifter was so fucking rubbery and had no character when I was flying around

The s650 feels soooo much more connected, drives way smaller, way tighter, front/middle/backend of the car now move as a whole
super blown away by how a platform tweak got them this kind of result

Saw a gold'y beige 2006'ish Corolla CE last night in Mississauga that made crackling sounds at the exhaust. I thought it was the BMW behind it, but no, it was a Corolla. Is that you, Badhobz?

no, but my man's a bloody genius. He just combined all the elements you'll ever need to score massive amounts of pussy
1) an ultra reliable vehicle that cost nothing to own/run
2) sporty enough that it makes a loud noise going down the street making people think youre in a bmw
3) biege/gold to show how much money you saved and how it reflects the amount of gold bars you have hidden away
4) with distinctive car name like COROLLA (little crown in latin) you know this person has a HUGE DICK. Girls faint at the prospects of a man with a biege corolla.
5) ratfur interior is required for ultimate corolla-ey-ness. Excuse me, not ratfur. velour-esq material. |

You'll also notice the weirdest gremlins when it comes to Apple Car Play, it's a daily adventure of whether or not it'll work properly, or if you'll need to reset the system completely.
I usually have to reset the entire car system (holding down the volume button) at least twice a week to get things working again.
My 2024 Mazda 3 Turbo AWD hasn't had a single UI issue in comparison.

I think this is probably more fun at normal speeds than the GRC. Maybe it's just me but that felt a bit too serious. Android Auto works about the same as everything else and I guess if you just leave everything in Auto and ignore the heated stuff and wheel controls you basically avoid the weird interface and the stupid noise it makes every time I change the volume lol. The GTI/Golf R has way more rear seat and trunk space than the GRC. I say that as someone who's had to ride in the back of both. The trunk space of the GTI/Golf hatches are unmatched now that Honda has done weird slopey things to the back of the Civic Type R.
The GRC has laughably little space for a hatch, which is true of the base Corolla hatch that it is based on, and even worse for the GRC since it has a high rear floor thanks to the location of the rear diff/driveshaft etc.

FYI. It's that time of the year again: https://vancouver.citynews.ca/2024/1...-alert-test-2/
A test of the National Public Alerting System will interrupt radio and television broadcasts and take over compatible cellphones around B.C. on Wednesday, Nov. 20 at 1:55 p.m.
The province says cellphones will receive an alert that reads:
“This is a TEST of the BC Emergency Alert system. This is ONLY a TEST. In an emergency, this message would tell you what to do to stay safe. This information could save your life. Click for more info: https://www.emergencyinfobc.gov.bc.ca/event/test/ This is ONLY a TEST. No action is required.

It's also that time of year where there is constant rain, dark early, harder to see, etc. and you hear of pedestrians getting hit. Be careful out there.

GTI is a daily that you could track. Type R (last gen) is a track car that you coulddaily.
Having driven Hobz' GTI.. the comfort is much much nicer. Everything is a lot softer and while the car is significantly slower, it's not made for speed. It's quick but it's not fast.

They're definitely different classes of cars, for me a car that's more fun on the street is more important than track performance on the off chance I make it to one. If I was wanting a serious track car I wouldn't be getting any spec of Corolla or Golf anyways. Quote:

The GRC has laughably little space for a hatch, which is true of the base Corolla hatch that it is based on, and even worse for the GRC since it has a high rear floor thanks to the location of the rear diff/driveshaft etc. | The premium GRC is just an exterior cosmetic package though. The important parts are all the same so pretty much the same pricing.
I'm surprised the Honda is even worse. I could just squeak one standard suitcase and one standard carry on into the GTI. It's been a while since I drove a regular Corolla hatch but I remember it being bigger than this. I have a hard time believing the Golf has that much more because then nothing would've fit into the Corolla.
I'd love it if Toyota had a Corolla hatch GTI with the G16 in a regular 2WD hatch. Since they don't I think the GTI is the best to drive out of the 3 of the 4 I've driven and I can see why Hobz loves his so much despite the quirks. I'm not entirely sure if I could get past them but I also don't think I'd be too upset if I was in the position where I had to buy a GTI.

| Err... sort of... eligible at 15 years instead of 25... so you gotta hang on to it until 2036/37.
