so ive been learning a language and chat gpt advanced voice has been a total gamechanger. you have to pay for it if you want to talk for more than like 15 minutes but its well worth paying for the pro version of chat gpt for this alone. i mean a private tutor is still a better experience but its fairly close, and you would pay less to subscribe to pro for a month than the cost of one session with a tutor. im done with stupid apps like duolingo that teach you jack shit. those are just games the amount of hours you put into those apps do not pay out well in terms of language proficiency for the time spent using them. anyone else learning a language and have good resources that actually work for them?

spoon.ek9 01-20-2025 08:53 AM

hmm my gf pays for chatgpt, perhaps i'll explore this for our japan trip

I already pay for pro for another reason, but never used it for voice features, let alone learning languages. What prompt do you give it to start the process?

What language are you learning ? I think Latin based languages are easier to do with this software but if you wanna learn something like Chinese or Japanese that’s still a void.

on the bottom right of the prompt dialogue box there is an icon that allows you to start a two way voice conversation

korean. i already pay for an online tutor and use textbooks as well but it's nice to have an option for 'free' conversational lessons. i think you can use it for more than just conversational as well, you can probably prompt it to do more structured learning but i havent tried yet.

Badhobz 01-20-2025 10:32 AM

korean is hard man, i didnt think chat GPT has conversational Korean.

I would get Aluminum Stairs made. Wood will keep rotting.

Korean is relatively easy to just be ok conversational. The way they simplified their writing made it so that as long as you remember all the "alphabets", you can read with ease.

Of course, advance level skills such as honorifics is hard as they are used only in particular situations and are very hard to use it properly without serious emersion.

One thing though, it's super easy to swear in Korean, there are only a handful curse words you really need to learn and it's all about the tone that you use. I learned that with my Korean classmates back in highschool in 3weeks flat. My later Korean friends say I swear just like a Korean. :fuckthatshit:

But with what I'd learned with Korean friends in highschool, I'm able to travel in Korea like ordering stuff in a resto, asking clerks to help me with purchases and whatever. Really maybe 100 words or so... yes, they'd know instantly you are not Korean, but it was enough to get by and send the msg to the other party.

The Korean alphabet is modern and intelligently designed. You should be able to pick up reading very quickly, which makes everything else easier.

unit 01-20-2025 05:24 PM

reading letters doesn't make a language easy though, otherwise vietnamese would be easy too. du maa

SkinnyPupp 01-20-2025 06:22 PM

Being able to read makes it infinitely easier. You can read magazines or subtitles or even street signs, and every time you can make out a word, you just learned a word. I can't hold a conversation in Japanese, but I can get around and enjoy media, because I know a lot of words that are important to topics that apply to my interests (like food and pro wrestling, or just transportation)

Try doing that with Chinese LUL

It's easier in a sense where you say what you read and what you write.

You can pick things up as you speak, read and write. It's always the same rule.

English is completely messed up in that regard and quite confusing for new learners.

"Our" (Ow-er)
"Your" (U-er)

How does adding another letter change it so much?

"Read" ("reed"in present tense)
"Read" ("red" in past tense)

Even more fucked up, how does 2 separate pronunciations exist for the same word?

The reason we have spelling bee is because English phonetic system is completely messed up.

In comparison, Korean always pronounce a letter in one way. There are no exceptions (not in the words I know/have heard of). Same thing goes for Spanish. How you speak is how you write and how you read. No exceptions other than maybe some fancy characters that aren't often used such as ü and people sometimes write a word containing those letter without using the appropriate one or local accent to certain letter. (for example "yo" can sound like ee-o like "yo-yo" in Spain and she-o in Argentina)

If any of you wankers have Telus services, your Telus Rewards are expiring Jan 30, 2025. Buddy of mine just told me.

So you should check your account and redeem them.

My account had 122 points and I redeemed them for $100 Telus bill credit, but they had gift cards you could get (Timmy's/Starbucks/etc.)

I'm just wondering what the fail is for.. Out of my 1500 fails he's probably responsible for 1000 of them.. I never care why.. feel free to click that button, I'm sure it feels great to do so.

But in this case I am completely baffled why anyone would disagree with that post, so I asked him to speak up on his feelings.

Out in La Jolla (San Diego) and spotted a BMW repair shop with a lot of vintage BMWs. None of them were mint but still all very cool to see:
