I'd try to nail that overbrewed slightly sour Robusta brew first, and then go from there |

For all you non Guangdong bastards, yin Yeung (ying yang) is when they mixed Hong Kong milk tea with coffee.
I find it offensive.
Oh and Hong Kong milk tea is basically British English breakfast tea with uhhh what was it again ? Evaporated milk or condensed milk. One of those to make a really rich tea. The old school method is to filter it through a silk pantyhose and therefore they call it si mat milk tea or silk sock milk tea.
Fuck you Guangdong idiots. Why the shit do I know this trash about your culture. I’m shanghainese for fuck sakes. Not like you retards would know anything about my pan fried river eel…. Or sugar / vinegar spareribs…. Or hairy crab

The staff were always really nice, the milk tea was pretty good (only when the angry Asian lady was working) and the food was consistent.
There was a server there named Roy, younger Asian guy. I was there with some RS'ers and we were talking about how some people on the forum were getting owned. After he served our meals, he jumped in out of nowhere and shouted out, "OWNED!!!!" and walked away. We were like, WTF? ![EleGiggle](images/smilies/EleGiggle.png) Good times.

GREAT NEWS!!!
My cat pooped!
He hasn't pooed since Friday, and while he's been eating and drinking, we were starting to feel really worried as he's 17 years old, and this kind of thing can be scary. He has been pretty low energy today, so we were going to take him to the vet tomorrow
But he pooped! And now he's running around, totally fine.
We'll still take him to the vet on the next day off, but for now, crisis averted
I have never been happier to clean up some shit. And it was 3 huge logs
Yey Jett! |

Alleluia used to be great when it first opened. Portions were huge and their 1 free refill of your drink policy made it an easy choice to go there. The second cup of c0t would for sure get me jittery with some mild heart palpitations lol. After awhile, those portions shrank but at least they still did the second cup for free as usual. It was a shame that it closed down, never to be seen again. Meanwhile shitty 1+1 cafe still exists.
+1 for not understanding why people like Yin Yeung. I've never really had good experiences with it.

i used to go to alleluia so much. it was a nice alternative to golden awards which became silver tower, except a bit better service as far as hk cafes went, and the free drink refill. eventually it went a bit downhill and drinks wouldnt even show up till like 20m into your meal.

Jungle Room review:
$55 DOV menu
We got the steak tartare and the prawn dumplings. Would recommend the tartare much more than the dumplings.
For the main, we got the 6oz steak which was good. However, having just had the 7oz steak at Boathouse, this steak felt more like it closer to 5oz than 6oz. Flavours were good but somehow the Boathouse steak had more pronounced beef flavour to it. The sauce at Jungle Room was better though and the meat was a bit more tender despite also being lean.
Dessert we got one of each: Mochi Churros with yuzu spiced chocolate pudding and jasmine milk foam. The foam is light and delicious! Green cardamom flan was the second choice and we both felt the Mochi Churros were a WAY better option between the two.
Overall, service was good, food was good but portions were lacking in comparison to Boathouse. Two meals, one cocktail, and tip left me a bill of about $150. Would I go back? Probably not but that's just me lol.

I can't be certain of that, just a guess. But it did seem significantly smaller than the steak at Boathouse. Either way, it seems like The Keg is the best deal with a 10oz prime rib or 8oz steak to choose from.

A couple weeks ago I lost my job. Never had this happen to me before and emotionally it's been hard but I'm finally crawling back out from my cave where I've spent the last couple of weeks. I've never met like 98% of you but for some reason this place is a place where I can share this stuff.
In 2022 the company I worked for was acquired by a Toronto-based company and since then I've felt like I'm on Squid Game, watching my friends and coworkers get killed for the past 2 years. Finally I lost the game too, the day after xmas holidays. It was very, very unexpected and I had zero warning signs. In fact, a month prior they were hinting I was on the cusp of promotion and so I was totally blindsided.
My wife's been awesome and very supportive. But ngl, it's hard seeing her be the only one bringing in income.
We had to cancel our planned renovation which she was excited for, so I feel bad about that.
The worst part was we are renewing our mortgage for Feb 1 and so the timing could not have been worse. Thankfully our broker pulled some strings and this lack of job did not end up being a problem. We locked in variable 5 years for 4.45 (includes the recent drop) and hoping for more drops. Fixed was 4.39 I think for 3 years.
I guess I have a few tips in case you run into this:
- The most important one is read your employment contract closely and learn exactly what restrictions there might be in the event you are terminated. Read the clauses on on non solicits, non competes, and any caps on entitled severance. Having spent the last 2 weeks negotiating my package with help from my lawyer, I learned a lot of stuff I didn't know. I'm happy to answer any questions anyone here might have on what I learned about negotiating severance packages.
- Keep a backup of your important files on your personal computer. Or, in my case, because my personal and work computer were the same, on my personal cloud. Contacts, documents, research, anything and everything you wish you had if you are suddenly terminated. My access to my email/contacts/drive was cut off within seconds of them telling me. There are a few docs I wish I had downloaded and kept but don't have access to anymore. I also lost a lot of contacts!
- Try and update your resume/linkedin profiles periodically. I haven't touched my resume in almost 10 years
- In our case, because my wife is still working, I have some severance, and we have savings, financially we're not in panic mode yet, but with our mortgage, it's only a matter of time until are in trouble. Have a plan mapped out for how you'll stay afloat if you lose your income and still have to pay rent/mortgage/bills, etc.
- It's cliche, but no matter what, never burn bridges. Vancouver's so small.
Maintain your network! You never know when you'll need help from others. You don't want to be that guy who never calls on his friends until he needs something. Getting a job by appyling to online postings is the worst way, as opposed to talking to your network and getting introduced. I've been setting up calls/lunches with people and everyone has been super supportive and offering to help me find something new by letting me know of job postings before they are even published. I'm so grateful for that, and so if you haven't yet created a trusted network for yourself, start now. Better late that never!
- If you're sitting on a bunch of unclaimed expenses, send them in, don't wait. I have about $3k in expenses from travel that I hadn't submitted and now I'm trying to get them to pay and they are being difficult/fuckfaces about it.

Sorry to hear about the job loss! I've been fired and laid off in the past so I can relate. One really positive takeaway of getting a severance package (if it's decent) is that it's rare to have paid time off with no obligations mid-career. The 3 months I had off (twice) were fantastic to have - my second time I was laid off and got a new job in 3 weeks but I was able to negotiate a start date 2 months out so I just chilled, caught up with friends, fixed up the house etc.
Share your line of work - there may be folks on here who are in the same line and can help you out.
