you do start fresh, unless you have classmates that continue with you, but you're also in a similar pool of transfer students too potentially.
hard to get laid? dude... i was in engineering not only impossible, no time - studying/homework like a good asian kid just trying to graduate

Since I never went, I'm curious if College and Universities actually teach people how to problem solve, how things work, etc... or do they tell people to prepare for exams by basically memorizing stuff?
I ask because the recent grads I've worked with were socially awkward AF and can't problem solve for shit... lol... yet they have CS degrees... what gives? lol

I ask because the recent grads I've worked with were socially awkward AF and can't problem solve for shit... lol... yet they have CS degrees... what gives? lol | My biggest take away from university is the ability to critical think and plan. The actual knowledge you gain from university can be absolutely useless in the real life depending on the field you end up in. The ability to think about grad requirements, and planning your courses 1, 2, 3 semesters ahead, and then making changes to your plans due to either courses not being offered or time conflicts etc, it was a big soft skill.
A bachelor's is really just an stamp card ticket, and unless you plan on being in that particular field with a requirement(engineering, medicine are ones which have a hard requirement), which faculty you are in and which major you graduate in makes very little difference.

And boy was it ever different! It was a small lecture hall, and there were all these intimidating and mostly Caucasian women taking the course.
The thing that made them "imtimidating" were -- a good number of them looked like they were hardcore feminists straight out from the stereotypical tropes. The prof was making it sound like the whole world was against having woman succeed. After that first week of class, I left so fast that I never had any intentions to consider any WS courses at all.
The eye-opening course for this IT nerd at the time was Econ 101. Rows and rows of neatly and beautifully dressed Asian girls sitting in the giant lecture hall, compared to the 3 or 4 "girls" in my 2nd year computational math class of ~200 students. Of course, all the guys in class were pretty much dressed in rags (or a Taiga / MEC shell).

I once did a COMMs presentation (BCIT folks you'll know what I'm talking about) in a lecture full of HRMG ladies (all the green haired ladies) amongst other feminists about how "Modern Day Feminism Is Overrated"
and it shockingly went pretty well
Also, I don't have my bachelor's and it would have made my job hunt a lot easier (maybe). But I haven't really needed it either. I might when I jump to a higher paying role or maybe just raw experience and my network will do the trick.

It was essential for me to go but not essential for my brother (he basically failed out of Langara and got busy doing shrooms) - we both have roughly landed in around the same tier of accomplishment in our careers (we are in adjacent roles and have even worked together a couple times).
My degree is in Political Science and Economics (couldn't hack it in business) and it taught me really valuable critical thinking skills - a lot of my studies was focused on thinking about opposing viewpoints and in doing a lot of research. Today, those are still some of my greatest strengths.

Couldn't quite hack it in business and ended up in Econ. My upper level courses were all focused on theory in trade and taxation which was super interesting to me. To this day I still hold a very strong interest in economic topics.
My career though is in tech. I would like to think that my soft skills learned in Econ help me be more distinguished in my field when a lot of my peers aren't great communicators.

All I do is problem solve often in an area I know nothing about. Currently dealing with logistics in Kazakhstan.

Mind you most saw ‘enjoying’ also flunked out as engineering, even small schools, was no joke.
Probably would have seriously explored a masters more and at a better city/school to explore
+1 to me not getting laid if I tried

To be fair, both UBC and SFU, until recently, were in terrible places to have fun and make friends if you didn't live on campus. SFU in the late 90s had NOTHING on Burnaby Mountain and UBC was quite isolated as well. The only time I had fun at SFU was when I retook an accounting class during the summer - made a few fun friends and we'd ditch class all the time to go day drink. The rest of the time SFU was a miserable place to be.

SFU is pretty miserable, takes half an hour just to get off the mountain, and more to get anywhere. It's drab, leaks everywhere. At least the buildings are all connected not like UBC where you gotta walk outside when it rains non stop for 4 months or the year.

SFU was brutal. I tried doing a CS degree straight out of HS and couldn’t keep my interest in the classes. The commute definitely didn’t help. I was at the crossroads of transferring to an Econ degree to keep my “SFU status” or eventually internally transfer to the business program if my grades were high enough, but I knew that was unlikely. Made the decision to pursue accounting at KPU and did not regret it all. It was definitely easier to make friends at KPU, I still hang out with them regularly to this day. I also did not have an issue with job prospects even though KPU isn’t respected as much.

Ehh Canadian university rankings dont mean much IMO whether UBC or SFU. The only one with global awareness is UToronto (St George) and maybe McGill. UBC might as well be Langara to anyone outside BC.

Here's the story about how SFU ended up where it did: https://bettercolumbia.ca/2024/12/15...naby-mountain/
The other locations considered were Burnaby Lake (bad soil), Okalla prison (near Royal Oak), and George Derby Center (sound of where Gaglardi Way is).
BCIT was founded around the same time - it would have been really interesting if SFU took BCIT's location and was built on both sides of Willingdon. The land certainly was big enough for it.

SFU = stupid fucking university
UBC = university of billion chinese.
it was very isolated. I lived in Richmond and commute was 45 min and gas was 69.9 back then. HOLY F i'm old.
What I'm seeing is this. There will be less and less kids driving.. (social media, being comfortable, and just having helicopter parents.) I don't know how people esp girls do NOT want to learn how to drive. Even guys nowadays.... there are NO excitement at all.
Now that when kids live at home, the only place to get it on are in a car... and now if you do'nt even drive.. how the F do you get laid or drive a girl at SFU down a mountain.

Bruh you were thinking about it all wrong, you're not trying to marry a girl in that situation... you don't drive her down off the mountain and be all romantic, you find a dark corner or empty tutorial room in the EQ or Biz wing... or if you're really hard up a bathroom stall. Or if it's nice enough weather out hit up the back seat of your car in B Lot.
Burnaby Mountain lookout was just like 2 mins down the hill, fuckathon for teens and early 20's every night there back in the day.
Nowadays there's an entire living community at SFU, I'm guessing you haven't been up there in quite a few years lol
