Free Phone!

Ok so my carrier is trying to get me to resign a contract with them as my current one is up this month. I've been with them for 15 years or so and they have basically told me I can have any I phone I want for free for customer loyalty and resigning a new contract with them....

I am totally out of the loop when it comes to phones these days. I'm currently using a Nokia N82 but I really don't use it for half of what's capable of.

What's the "Android" market like now? Are the apps easy to find and apply and use? iPhone 4 is something I'm considering but I really don't like the iTunes virus and if I can avoid installing it on my computer that would be great. What is the best Android phone out there right now?

One last question.. if 2 phones have the "same" app ie. Android and iPhone4 can they communicate with each other like 2 iPhones would or has iPhone locked the ability to communicate with other platfroms?

Sorry for the noob questions but I need guidance!

Berz out.

When does the iPhone5 come out??

Berz out.

SkinnyPupp 09-15-2011 06:45 AM

I wouldn't bother with an iphone 5 personally, if you are wanting to avoid dealing with itunes. Galaxy S II seems to be the way to go for Android.

And yes, apps that are available on both markets can interact with each other. Some examples are Skype, Whatsapp, Words with Friends, etc.

Early next month. I would wait for it even if you dont want the iphone since I'm sure when it comes out, the rest of the other phones will have a price drop.

skyxx 09-15-2011 03:23 PM

^ Iphone is out in November for Canada I believe and America early Next Month. No?

kevin7352 09-15-2011 08:47 PM

from the point of view of a cell phone dummy, i kinda think android phones lose their resale value really quick and iphones are like the honda of phones.
just my opinion!

vafanculo 09-15-2011 08:54 PM

Just get i5, sell it, buy the phone you want, and profit

Haven't really read all the posts in this thread here but I can tell you that it wouldn't be the best move for you to take them up on their offer for the iPhone 4. The iPhone 5 has been confirmed and will be released sometime soon so you'd want to wait for that if any iPhone. It's all about dollars and cents at the end of the day and you're going to want the phone that holds the most value. iPhone 4 value will go down the drain where as the iPhone 5 value will be the highest when you get it this year. If you're not satisfied with the iPhone 5 after you buy it, you could sell it for a ridiculous price on craigslist and buy a phone of your choice from the unlocked market like you did before.

The Android Market is pretty extensive and has quite a variety of apps. Obviously there will be MORE apps in the Apple App Store but it is definitely a saturated store. With 20+ developers making the same application for the same purpose, you certainly will have a better variety of applications, but really they all do the same thing. On the Android Market, I've found that there are less crappy apps out there and as a result, the Market isn't saturated with useless junk. Not saying there isn't junk in the android market, just not as much as the app store.

A LOT of apps are now able to be used on cross-platforms and communicate with each other. Obviously your most common apps like WhatsApp will communicate regardless of platform, but a lot of new games are also becoming multi-platform compatible.

In the end, the choice is yours. Telus is coming out with the Samsung Hercules soon which is supposed to be a beast of a phone. The Galaxy S II is out and available from Bell and Telus also has the Samsung InFuse as it's smaller counter-model. Of course, if we knew which carrier you're with right now, we could guide you a little better knowing what options are avail. to you.

*Also, if you have the N82 right now, I'm going to assume you don't have data and I'm certain you don't have a smartphone package. Keep in mind, that when they offer you that iPhone for free, they are most likely going to get you to pay for a smartphone data plan and lock you in contract with that too. Be aware of all changes and add-ons that they may require you to get before upgrading to the new "free phone."

FerrariEnzo 09-16-2011 12:38 AM

I would not sign a contract..

They gotta offer you something better then free phone for signing 3 more years... like 6 months free with a free phone or something... play it to your advantage, not theres.

KEEP it to month to month... this way you have leverage, in case you want to switch or something...

also, if you have time, just read up on some reviews of phones.. http://www.gsmarena.com/ usually has good reviews.

BossFrancis 09-17-2011 05:35 PM

Generally, most of the Android apps are NOT free. However, there are some good ones you can get.

JayEch 09-17-2011 05:40 PM

^ true, there are also free versions of most games as well. Their just loaded with ads. Apps are just a buck

Berzerker 09-17-2011 06:11 PM

How does one gets apps on the Android phones? Is there a "store" like for iPhones?

Thanks for all the replies so far. For the record my carrier is Fido and I have the OLD city fido plan. Like.. the first one they offered way back in the day. I think there are better plans now than Cityfido so I'm not to scared of losing that plan anymore...

So I'm thinking I'll wait for iPhone 5 and then if I don't like it.... sell it and go Android.

I won't be installing iTunes though.... haha

The problem with that phone is that it is incredibly wide. My friend has this and its awkward to carry around in your pocket.

!MiKrofT 09-17-2011 07:02 PM

I thought you can't activate the iphone without itunes.

In iOS 5 you can activate on the phone directly. But you still need to create an itunes account and enter your credit card info.

Galaxy S2
12.53cm x 6.61cm x 8.49mm, 117g

iPhone 4, might be the same size or smaller than iPhone5?
11.52cm x 5.87cm x 9.3mm, 137g

SkinnyPupp 09-17-2011 07:16 PM

If iPhone 5 indeed gets the 4.3" screen everyone is talking about, it will have to be as wide as the SGS 2.

If they do that stupid bezel-free design someone mocked up, it will be smaller. But then you would be touching the screen all the time just holding the phone, so it would be an absolute design failure.

Ahh I see.. I haven't touched that stuff since the iphone 3G days.

parm104 09-18-2011 01:05 AM

I don't believe the iPhone 5/4S is going to change in design or in shape. I don't see it happening. From past experience, any major over-hauls have been announced well in advance and when they upgrade using slight modifications, that's when they release it without a huge launch countdown. That's just my opinion of course.

As for Android Market, it's fantastic. Since we're all helping each other out here I don't think it would be inappropriate for me to say that download "paid" apps online is A LOT easier than going through Cydia and Installous on the iPhone. Once your Android phone is rooted, you simply download the apk's online. I've got about 10 HD Gameloft Games and a whole bunch of EA games on my phone as well as tons of other paid apps that I simply downloaded after searching on Google.

To find an app, simply type in the app name + APK. For example, lets say WhatsApp cost money on Android like it does on iOS (which it doesn't, it's free on Android.) You would simply type into google: "Whatsapp+APK" and download the file that shows up in the results. After downloading the file, just email it to yourself or transfer it using your computer and voila, install it and you're good to go. From that point on, you can update without any problems and don't have to keep resorting to Installous every time a new update comes like you do in iOS.

Yes, let's pirate a fucking $1 app :seriously:

Do you still steal candy when you go to 7-11?

No Carl, I don't steal candy from 7/11 because I buy it bulk from Costco right after Halloween.

Who are you to tell me or anyone else what they can or cannot pirate? Are you implying that because of the low-dollar value of a particular app, that it should not be pirated? If you want to talk morality, the value of an app shouldn't affect whether it's right or wrong to pirate. Sorry to break it to you, but the majority of the people on this forum do download pirated apps on their phones regardless of the PRICE...It's FREE and that's ALL that matters.

In case you didn't catch on, I said FOR EXAMPLE let's use WhatsApp because it's a commonly used App by people on iOS and Android.

And don't worry, I'm sure the fact that you've priced the RevScene app to only $0.99, it has deterred so many people from downloading it pirated.

SkinnyPupp 09-18-2011 03:20 AM

What's with the use of real names all of a sudden?

So Parm, now that we're on a first name basis, you are telling me that it isn't relevant how much an app you are stealing costs.. so you'd steal it whether it's $1 or $100? But you wouldn't steal candy? Just because you get it cheap at Costco? What about things that don't get highly discounted like candy after Halloween? How about car stereos? What makes it OK to steal software but not car stereos?

Unless you do steal car stereos.. you never know right? :fuckthatshit:

All jokes aside, I am just wondering where you are coming from on this. What is the justification for stealing $1 items, that's all. Is it just because you can't get caught like you could if it was a chocolate bar from 7-11 (or a box of them from Costco, as it were)?
