Good Read - Hybrid vs. Purebred dogs

The Known Advantages of "Hybrid Breeding"
(And Why It's Illegal to Marry Your Cousin... Even if She's Really Pretty)
A dog breeder's treatise in opposition to commonly promoted dog breeding practices
By Daniel Blasco, Blasco Family Bulldogs©

Prologue

Writing this article is a bit intimidating to me. I'm going to write some things I think folks not associated with dogs professionally have a right to know. At the same time, however, some more professional dog people may likely become irritated. I wish that were not the case, and I truly mean no offense. In the end, it is only natural to resist any direct assault on a popular dogma, and in the end, I care more about dogs than my own popularity. Be advised, in castigating the dog breeding industry, I will at least not do so based solely on my own opinions. The more research-oriented reader will find a complete bibliography at the bottom of the page. You will also find many example photos. I am not asking you to "take my word for it," but am merely presenting factual evidence that demands the reader's own verdict.

I agree that the kennel clubs have destroyed some breeds, but I don't think it automatically makes purebred dogs bad.

Some breeds have been ruined though

Personally, I love my mutts. I see so many purebred dogs that all look alike... I have two Porkies from the same litter that look completely opposite and another mixed pup that's totally unique.

I'd only get a purebred dog if it was of the best quality I could afford or a rescue. Mutts seem to have fewer health problems and definately are more unique looking. It was really sad to see that Dogo Argentinos are going downhill. I thought they were a fairly new breed but I guess it doesn't take very long for people to fuck that up.

Going to go check out a Neo Mastiff/American Bulldog X tomorrow.

Spoiler!

That's cute

I have been trying, without luck, to get a Doberman here in Hong Kong. Crazy rare here, but it looks like it will be impossible to get one (unless I import one from Australia or elsewhere for $2200+ just for transportation)

So I'll probably just adopt a mutt

I really want a highly trainable dog though.. I am really interested in training a dog

I think what's happened to bulldogs is disgusting. One of my buddies has one he rescued and the thing can barely walk 10 feet before it's huffing, snorting and choking on it's tongue.

That being said, my favourite dogs are pure bred German Shepherds. They may have some problems in their breed, but it's not even close to something like bulldogs. One thing is certain, reputable breeders are key.

Yes, and breeds that adhere to European standards as opposed to AKC (and whoever else uses heir standards, like CKC) seem to be better as well. For instance I was looking at a lot of doberman breeders, and learned a lot about the breed. A European doberman is bred quite differently - more for 'work' as in trainability, while the American kind is more for show - so it has become a 'softer' breed, more of a house pet than a training dog.

I do think fashion (what's in style) and breed clubs have altered and changed the standards in a way that is not positive. Unfortunately alot of that is what the general public asked for. people wanted a certain look so this pushed judges to favor that, in turn pushing the breeders to breed for that. It's a vicious cycle. I see this happening with some crossed breeds as well though. People don't buy dogs for a job anymore, they pick them based on looks.

Oh just wanted to comment on the "want a dog for training" thing. Any dog can be trained to do anything. My shih tzu did competitive obedience, a friends pomeranian does herding (ducks not sheep but still).

difference between a AKC show gsd and a euro working line is so different you would think they are completely different breeds.

The american version often have super slanted back that makes the dog look and act cripple. But i guess ppl like that look

Good read even for someone as myself who doesn't currently own a dog.

Now I don't know what I would want if and when I do decide to get another dog. In the past I had a Border Collie, which was a really intelligent animal.
