Reliability of the 240sx

Hey everyone, so it's first car hunting time and I was considering the 240sx. For a few reasons,
  1. They look pretty cool
  2. They are relatively cheap
  3. They are pretty fast cars stock
  4. There are plenty of aftermarket parts available in case (as if I have the money)I decide to upgrade

What do you guys think? Any other suggestions/recommendations?

Or should I just cross the 240 off my list indefinitely.

Oh...and i'm 17 and paying for this all myself...so budget is kind of important too.

Thanks

Buy one in good condition and they are reliable. Don't do stupid cheap mods and maintain it well, and it will last a long time. I'm on my second S14, and I think it's a great car, which is why I bought it a second time around.

They're pretty slow stock...

You'll be fine though. Relatively simple cars.

I remember before I bought mine, people were telling me they are unreliable. Those people are on glue. Like any other car, as long as it has been maintained properly and reasonably cared for, it will be fine. Also, if you abuse it, something will eventually break. This goes for any car though.

I just got mine not too long ago too! Pretty fun beginner RWD car to drive. So far I haven't had an issue at all except for the stock exhaust rusting through. Aside from that do your regular oil changes and regular maintenance and it'll be all good.

Either or - S13 or S14. I don't think I will catch the mod bug. Partly because it is way too expensive, but to be honest, if the car is reliable and looks relatively good then I would be down with it.

The only thing I would consider replacing would be things such as tires, brakes (safety things) and maybe consider painting it or fixing up the interior if I had available money. I'm not really into the whole super body kitting and expensive exhaust with a GIANT wing.

Thanks for all the posts guys,
Just a random thought, I am the kind of person who would keep his car for a long long time (for sentimental reasons etc).

Of course I would do the regular maintenance etc. That thing would be like my baby. And as long as its not a major rust problem...such as full on floor boards I could replace (or get) the exhaust replaced.

same! i jsut bought mine few months ago. I like it very much

so far it is reliable i dont have any issues on it except for the fuel pump because the last owner likes to run the car on empty and maybe some rust here and there, then again its a 20 year old car

I can easily say that the best cars I've ever owned were 240's.

Oh, hey...cool.

That sounds pretty damn good fuel economy wise. That alone sounds like its worth it. Although thats like 80 bucks to fill up the tank..

I think a stock KA24DE is pretty much indestructible with regular maintenance. On other s-chassis forums I've heard of many cases where the engine went well past 400,000 kms with little to none problems. Sounds like you're not really into the whole mod scene so I guess I'll just skip that.

Only peeve I sort of have is that (I guess for my s14 at least) I can't seem to get past 450~ km per 60L tank of gas with the stock ka24de.. no matter how hard or soft I drive.. =_+ and I use the recommend 91 so it costs me quite a bit being a student

It depends where you're driving (hilly area, highway/city) and you're wasting money filling up with 91.. I get 550km/tank driving easy and this is on 87 too.

Do not modify your daily driver.

I'm on my 4th s13 right now. I paid $5000 for a mint chassis because Its soul purpose is to be a porsche destroyer. I have 5 other cars/trucks right now as a 240sx is not a good daily driver once you start modifying suspension etc. If you are looking for cheap transportation, it may be best to find any fwd car owned by some old granny that has low kms, and pay for what you get.

Buy a house with a garage before you buy a sports car.

Aww then it's going to be a long time without a sport(like) car

Yea. Was thinking about modifying it into more of a sports car if I had money left over but everyone seems to be against the idea of modifying the daily driver.

It depends on your suspension choice.
My S14 is a very good daily driver.

pffft mine's sitting on stances and I daily it errryday. Love it much more than stock suspension even just for daily usage. My car is much more solid compared to my friends' rolly-polly stock rides. Old cars = old crap if you gotta replace it anyways might as well step it up.
