okay, I'll bite. what's your beef with water to air coolers?

Shorn 09-22-2011 08:49 PM

meh... the v10s cool at first but then you start missing low end torque. put a high revving motor in the m3, and give the m5/6 a grunty v8 and we're set. the v10 with an exhaust does sound great though.

JoshuaWong 09-22-2011 09:36 PM

Its probably a better car in every aspect other than this.

Less efficient than air/air intercoolers. Air/water intercoolers by themselves are far more efficient than air/air intercoolers could ever be. But air/water intercoolers are part of a closed system, and this system will have lower overall efficiency than a pure air/air intercooler would.

I think it looks too tamed for an M5. But still
stunning nonetheless

Iron Chef 09-22-2011 10:42 PM

I think the main reason they used air/water is mainly for packaging. It makes the engines very modular.

Long gone are the days of NA motors. When you factor in the emissions and fuel ecconomy they they have to achieve with horse power forced induction is the only way to go.

I'm not sure I agree. The air in the intercooler gets quite a bit hotter than the temperature of the engine coolant. Since air/water is several hundred times more efficient than air/air, the water doesn't have to be much cooler than the air in order to remain more efficient than an air/air system.

FYI Ford has an air/water intercooler in the 6.7L diesel, and I've bought used ex-Nascar air/water coolers off ebay, and that's for non-turbo engines that don't even get as hot at turbo'd engine.

Clearly it must be a superior system otherwise there is no way Ford would spend the money to implement it, especially without advertising it they they do with direction injection, for example.

they've been doing that since the intro of the 4.4 TT V8

Don't want to jack this thread, so perhaps we could start a new thread to discuss this specific issue - I'm sure some turbo guys would be interested.

altho this function will be big in UK, and HK most NA cars will not have this function. ex. the new 911 will not have the stop start, the panamera neither does a whole lot of bmw and merc

Over9000 09-23-2011 06:49 AM

^ coz Americans panic if their cars stall out at the lights? LOL

!Aznboi128 09-23-2011 06:53 AM

^ more like we wanna hear the sound of the engine growl even at a light, rather then sitting in silence.....

Iron Chef 09-23-2011 09:37 AM

start/stop technology is definitely being phazed in by all manufactures. Mercs are starting to roll in into there line up. Fuel economy is a huge priority for all manufactures

Lomac 09-23-2011 09:40 AM

I haven't driven a car with stop/start yet. Is there a pause between hitting the accelerator and the car actually moving? Or is it basically instantaneous?

CharlieH 09-23-2011 01:15 PM

^

drove a new e-class in europe with it, and there is a slight pause but nothing too noticeable. it literally cranks for a split second and you're off.

turbomelon 09-23-2011 01:16 PM

anyone read that jalopnik article about how bmw is going to use fake electronic engine noises (ala soundracer) pumped through the interior speakers to make up for the lack of engine noise in the cabin?

New BMW M5 fakes its engine noise for your pleasure

6insomnia9 09-23-2011 03:59 PM

The E60 M5 is still the best/greatest car i have ever driven.

lol, ya wtf is that. Why would i want to hear a digital replica of my engine through my cars speakers. Thats gotta be one of the riciest features available in a new car.

:failed:

the new 991 will have auto start stop and last I check on my Panamera, auto start/stop is standard and its off by default.

and pretty much all BMW since 2011 have auto start/stop as standard including the E92 M3 in NORTH AMERICA

totally agree !
all the new fancy items add weight to the car
end up with bigger engine, burning even more fuel, more parts can go wrong, higher repair bills
I wish car nowadays can be as simple as cars made in 90s
