StylinRed 07-20-2013 03:43 AM

So....I get home and im still wide awake

so i thought ye know what? im going to finish putting together my htpc

and i start plugging everything in i press the power button annnnnddddd the fans come on then the system shuts off

so i start unplugging things to try and figure out the problem (i unplug the extra hard drives and the video card) still nothing

then i noticed i forgot to plug in the 12v plug into the motherboard so i do that first without plugging the rest back in

everything turns on fine so i install windows update the bios etc everythings good to go

turn everything off and plug the hard drives and video card back in turn the computer on and nothing

the fans dont even come on absolutely nothing -_-

i unplug the drives again and the video card hoping that maybe that was the cause
and i press the power button again

and nothing at all -_-

i guess i shorted something? when plugging the hard drives and video card back in? :okay: fuck

^^ did you discharge yourself first?

underscore 07-20-2013 10:11 AM

double check the power cable is plugged in and your PSU and surge bar are on, I've scared myself leaving one of those turned off before.

Yep did that several times

I'm too :okay: over it to give it another go now

The 5v light on the motherboard comes on but that's it

DragonChi 07-20-2013 03:44 PM

No beeps? Diagnostic lights? swap components?

Hmm, it worked before, try going back a step.

StylinRed 07-20-2013 04:23 PM

yeah no beeps at all no fan movement absolutely nothing as if it wasn't plugged in (but it is)

i'll give it another go, i guess i have to, during the weekend and then i think ill just bring it to ncix if its not resolved by monday to see if they can do anything

FerrariEnzo 07-20-2013 11:14 PM

does the fan on the PSU turn on?
Either the PSU or mobo might be shot.. do you have spare to test with?

+1
paperclip method the PSU

unplug everything other than mobo/fans and see what happens

RAM questions:

I have a spare pair of 8g DDR3 1333, will it go well with the 4770K?

SkinnyPupp 07-21-2013 06:09 AM

Yeh it's fine, save some $. Try OCing to 1600 if you can.

asian_XL 07-21-2013 06:40 AM

actually I want to buy another pair to make it 4 x 4gb...in the old days you need dual channel kit to make it work, not sure if o/cing the 4770k with these 1333 ram will bottleneck the system?

they are some cheap $120hkd 4g rams I bought for the old system, lol, but I will give it a try first.

Hey guys i'm really thinking of smashing my stupid PS3 and going back to PC gaming but my PC is a lil outdated now.

I think I need a new PC so i'm wondering if I should buy this model of X51
The Dell Online Store (*click review for specs) or am I better off building another PC.

I think $1200 to maybe $1400 is a reasonable amount to spend for a PC that can handle current games but I am really bad at knowing current parts and prices. What do you all think?

If you spare time and know how to use a screw-driver then don't buy pre-builts unless it's a crazy deal...they cheap out on things like motherboard, PSU and cooling which are very cruical parts

Google some common builds...your requirements (you said for games...are they hardware intensive and what resolution)..then post the part list here and we'll critque them

paperclip method is where its at unless u have another PSU to swap in and rule out the power supply isn't done. You won't get shocked, I've done it in the past :)

If you unplugged everything and left the PSU and fans connected then its either the mobo or power supply, or the on button/switch.

to test on/off button you can try "jump starting" the computer but if you're not down for the paperclip method then you won't be wanting to do this either...

Didn't see a Solid State Drive in there, you definitely want a SSD for your OS and common games...these things are amazing :fullofwin:

and +1 to what was said above, its almost always better if you build the unit yourself rather than relying on big name manufactures that cut corners and use cheaper material

Fappin 07-22-2013 03:26 PM

Don't really wanna start a new thread just for this question so I'll ask here.

Anyone know if the 2013 Razer Blackwidow Ultimate edition come with blue backlight? Or do they only come in green backlight now

impactX 07-22-2013 08:48 PM

Yeah, only green. I am glad I got the older version.

Fappin 07-22-2013 10:42 PM

Fck lol I prefer the blue backlight over green :okay:

impactX 07-22-2013 11:29 PM

^ Same... but I guess they try to match the color with their logo.

FerrariEnzo 07-23-2013 05:20 AM

I got the Tournement Edition.. couldnt afford the full size version :okay:
nah, I just didnt like the number keys on the side

3klipze 07-24-2013 05:14 PM

How reliable are Kingston HyperX 3K? NCIX has them on sale. Maybe looking into getting it.

Purely 07-24-2013 05:28 PM

^ I bought one 1.5 months ago, and so far it's running strong.
