Yeah I wouldn't recommend the 830. What else is available in your price range?

CRS 08-28-2013 01:57 AM

I was looking to spend ~$100 since it would only be used for my OS.

Suggestions?

SkinnyPupp 08-28-2013 02:09 AM

Kingston SSDNow V300 120GB 2.5in SATA3 LSI SandForce Solid State Disk Flash Drive SSD

Only other drive is the normal 840, which has the same problem as the 830 apparently. The only other site that tests consumer drives like I do, AFAIK, are hardocp and anand, and anand doesn't test for steady state curve. Hardocp tests fresh and steady separately, which shows that the 840 sucks (at this low capacity) when used:

http://www.hardocp.com/images/articl...bhYXln_8_1.png

http://www.hardocp.com/images/articl...bhYXln_8_4.png

Disregard the V300 100% random result they throw in - it doesn't represent real world data in any way. I do my tests at 46% which is about the same as what you get with real data you use every day.

V300 is my recommended budget drive, but sometimes you can get a Sandforce based MLC drive (instead of toggle) for the same price if you catch a sale.

Sealed- Brand New OCZ Revodrive 110GB SSD OCZSSDPX-1RVD0110

Good deal?

*edit:
Running away. hahaha

SkinnyPupp 08-28-2013 02:29 AM

NO

FerrariEnzo 08-28-2013 05:09 AM

Anyone tried the ADATA SSD/Ram kits?

I saw NCIX doing lots of reviews of this brand

SkinnyPupp 08-28-2013 05:27 AM

I reviewed an ADATA Sandforce asynchronous MLC drive, and it was just like any other Sandforce asynchronous MLC drive (including the crash bug before the big firmware update)

So if I find a 128 Samsung 830 for $70 used, I should..... walk...?

Walk. There are better deals out there.

Personally, I would aim for a 240GB SATA3 drive. It doesn't have to be the latest and greatest SSD on the market today, but it shouldn't be older stuff like the Samsung 830 is. They can be had in the $150 - $170 range.

I would say the 240GB mark is where the price-performance ratio sweet spot is at right now. 240GB drives are almost always faster than their 120GB counterparts, and their per GB costs are similar to the 120GB drives. Yes, it'll end up costing you <$200 if you buy new, versus a sub-$100 cost if you look for something in the used market. But you'll get more space for a few more games and programs, and you'll get a faster drive as well. I'd say the extra $100 is worthwhile and money well spent.

You just have to keep an eye out for deals through the usual channels (NCIX, ME, etc.)

G 08-28-2013 11:23 AM

Skinnypupp, what's the problem with the Samsung 840?

Purely 08-28-2013 12:09 PM

Regular Samsung 840 SSD is quite weak/would not recommend.

I was only looking to load an OS onto the SSD and have my 1tb 3.5 hold the rest of stuff.

Why would you need to load games on your SSD?

Faster load times? Smoother transitions? The usual reasons why SSD is superior to traditional HDD.

I wouldn't recommend storing data on SDD just yet, but OS and frequently used programs (including games) seem like they should be the prime candidates to keep on the SSD.

The 120 gb version drops performance rapidly. The higher capacity ones seem fine, but I am wary if their durability. I'm waiting for tech report to finish their endurance testing

CRS 08-28-2013 06:30 PM

So insights please...

XFX 6950 Double Dissipation 2GBs for $120 or Galaxy GTX 660 GC 2GBs for $150?

knight604 08-28-2013 06:57 PM

I have Visiontek Radeon HD 5870 1GB GDDR5 2XDVI HDMI Display Port DIRECTX11 PCI-E Video Card

right now

should i upgrade it?

For typical desktop usage, I would not be concerned at all about the durability of consumer grade SSD, even if they are TLC-based.

I know it's a new and entirely different drive, but here is a section on SSD endurance (of the new Samsung 840 EVO) analysis from Anand:

AnandTech | Samsung SSD 840 EVO Review: 120GB, 250GB, 500GB, 750GB & 1TB Models Tested

As you can see, the 120GB version of that drive is estimated to last almost 8 years with a higher than average write load. Assuming that you are using older and less durable technologies, how many years of usage do you suppose you can get out of an SSD drive?

For me, it isn't a number I'd be concerned about. I don't think my usage is that high at all, so the SSD will be more than enough to last me the life of the PC it is installed on.

I'm still waiting for real world tests. Anything over 5 years is good... Anything under that and yes, I would be very concerned.

I wonder where my SSD stacks up...also SF-2281 controller but 24nm Toshiba Toggle NAND...probably look at the Kingston 3K as it's the closest in spec?

Is your drive an OCZ Max IOPS?

Performance wise, it will be around the same as most MLC based Sandforce drives (like the Kingston 3K) but will maintain its speed at lower capacities (ie the 120gb version will be like a 240gb MLC drive)

660 only because it's based on a newer architecture
what about the 7850/7870?

Sandisk Extreme 240GB
I know what its performance is like i meant I wonder what it's longevity is for OS/typical apps/games

It's about as fast as they get, and as durable as it gets
