One is good, one is better, one is best! And then there's the 290X!

Get whichever fits into your budget

I do think that if BF4 is your main game by a long margin, AMD is the way to go in any case.

black friday is coming!!! gonna buy a new rig this year

29 days and counting

Psykopathik 10-31-2013 09:34 AM

current rig:

AMD bulldozer 4.2 ghz
GTX560ti 448
16gb ram
256gb corsair SSD

upgrade suggestions? bottlenecks? I'm leaning toward the cpu.

Recon604 10-31-2013 09:40 AM

yeah cpu for sure

twitchyzero 11-01-2013 10:17 AM

when is that r9 290x card you guys r talking about coming out available for sale at Mem Exp or NCIX ?
I wanna get rid of my sli setup and be ready for Witcher 3, I dont think ill be able to play it maxed out with my current cards...

any recommendations for which model 290x to get btw ?

also my dad wants me to build him a new PC his old dual core AMD is about to blow up, all he does is surf the web, so should I wait until black friday, or does it not matter since he just needs something fairly generic?
still wanna set him up with a minimum i5 quad core so he's good for a few more years of web surfing

I'd suggest the AMD A10 or whatever is the newer one.. fast cpu with good gpu power.. plus its cheap also...

R9 290 = almost identical performance to the 290X but $150 cheaper

thanks Enzo, I looked it up looks like the A10 6800 would be a good choice, from what was written about it on the NCIX reviews I won't even have to buy him a video card, they say the A10 does pretty good for even light gaming so it should be good enough for his basic work related graphic programs. Planning on Win 7, is 4gb enough or should I go with 8gb, he multitasks (well really just lazily opening a bunch of shit and never closing it, like a bunch of Chrome windows, Office, other programs all running at same time constantly I think 8gb just to be safe eh ?

so Skinny you don't recommend I get a 290x ? a 290 is good enough ?

SkinnyPupp 11-04-2013 11:35 PM

290 is definitely better to buy, but wait and see how nvidia reacts

8gb seems to be the norm now anyways.. plus the price seems ok.. around $60-$80.. dont really need the highspeed gaming ram either..
I would get 16gb, if he multitask heavily, it will come handy.... but 8gb should be just fine and just invest in an SSD drive

G-spec 11-07-2013 04:17 PM

^ yea 8 gb of 1600 should do it then, cool...

and 290 it is then thanks Skinny
and I read up a little bit on both the 290 and 290x and seems they got major heat and noise issues, was thinking of getting this Accelero liquid cooler and replace the factory plastic thingy... on the official site of Accelero it says it fits the 290

I'd still get the 290

R&R 11-07-2013 04:49 PM

why? ^

SkinnyPupp 11-07-2013 04:56 PM

They're all over 60 FPS average on that chart.. The 290X is at 63, the 780 is at 60, and the 780 Ti is at 68 or so

Those tiny increases cost $100-300 extra on top of the 290.

With games being held back by console specs, it's not worth it unless you have a super high res monitor, or multi monitors

I dnt think the Titan would drop that low.. lol... IMHO, Titan is only worth it if you plan on doing a HUGE screen setup, 5-6 monitors... the 6gb ram is suitable...

Without 64 bit game executables though, you won't be able to make use of that VRAM...

That being said, are there any? Maybe games based on next gen consoles will be?

once 780 nipped at the heels of Titan being 1/3 cheaper I knew this would happen fairly soon...I'm just surprised it happened this year.

that said I'm sure majority of the titan owners don't care about what's cost effective...that's the cost of being on the bleeding edge

edit: nvrmind problem solved :)

AMD had their little developer summit today and STILL no performance figures on Mantle API...starting to seem a bit suspicious if it's even going to be worthwhile since talk is cheap

they did say it can work on all modern GPUs...I wonder if nvidia and intel are game.

My post is a bit more clear on the subject (IMO) in that it has the POTENTIAL to support other hardware, not that it does in current form.

hot deal? Newegg.ca - Intel 530 Series SSDSC2BW240A4K5 2.5" 240GB SATA III MLC Internal Solid State Drive (SSD)

Traum 11-14-2013 09:28 PM

^^ I'd say it's a good deal, but not a hot deal. It seems to me that in the 240GB MLC consumer range, sale prices of $150 - $160 happen often enough -- perhaps once every 4-8 weeks? Just yesterday, NCIX had a 1-day special on the Seagate 600 SSD (240GB) for $160 as well, and that drive offers a more consistent level of performance, especially as the drive gets filled up.
