I'm going to be hooking it up to 2 monitors I have already. Potentially 3 in the future
I'm primarily going to be using this station for web dev: that includes
-coding (with some IDE or even Dreamweaver for just pure webpages)
-Adobe CS5.5 family products

So this is not a gaming machine! I get way too easily addicted to games, so i've had to lay off installing any on my PC

I went with the A8 because it seemed decent with integrated graphics.
Not completely sold on it though as the processor itself seems weak

I'm also on a fairly tight budget. It's nice that it comes with integrated graphics

AMD A8-3850 $140
ASUS F1A75-V Pro ATX FM1 $110
Antec EarthWatts EA-380D GREEN ATX12V $45
intel 320 gen3 80gb $139.66
Kingston HyperX KHX1600C9D3K2 8 gig $36.99

D-LINK DWA-556 Xtreme N Desktop Adapter $42.29

TOTAL 513.94

-I have an old Antec Sonata II case lying around. I bought it probably 6-8 years ago...but it should be fine right?
-And as Hard drive prices are ridiculous right now, im going to hold off. I have a 160gb spare seatgate drive lying around also from 6-8 years ago, and a 2TB NAS
-I also have a nvidia 7950 GT KO lying around. Is this something thats worth using in a build? (i could reconfigure it if so)
-And yes...i need a wireless adapter lol. thats one of the cheaper non usb ones i could find. I've never tried a usb WLAN adapter though (they are really cheap though)

sorry for turning this into my life story, but any comments guys?
Good thinking going with the A8. Even though the CPU part is weaker than what you'd get with Intel, it has a decent integrated GPU. Not good for games, but it will certainly help with your Adobe programs

But your NVIDIA card will probably be even faster, so there's really no reason to choose the A8 over an Intel Core i3 if you are going to use a video card.

SSDs are hot items on the market now. i got the crucial m4 just like Hondaracer. i was a bit sceptical about taking the plunge, but it was definitely worth it. on sata2 (on my previous desktop), cold boots took probably 30 seconds or so. on sata3 (current desktop), cold boots seemed to be reduced by another 10 seconds at least.

if you're really after storage, try to salvage a hard drive off a friend's older pc or laptop for now and wait until HDD prices stabilize. it's going to take at least 6 months. seagate's more likely to recover faster considering that they seem to have more factories outside of thailand.

How about hybrid drives? I heard that the SSD has limited read/write cycles so they'll fail sooner than traditional hardrives. Is that true?

i was looking into ssds slightly before i recently bought one

and it sounds like the limited nature still gives it over a decade of use

SSD do have a 'hard limit' unlike mechanical drives. But mechanical drives are mechanical, so almost always die after 5 years or so. An SSD won't simply start 'clicking' on you, it will just stop writing to flash, a little bit at a time. And like Stylin said, it probably won't be for quite a while under normal circumstances.

Also, even when the flash expires, you will ALWAYS be able to read from it. It's only the WRITING that stops working, not the reading. So you won't lose data on a dead SSD. If you want, you can even keep using it as an archive

Let us know how it goes!

Luckily someone offered to trade me their 2700K from that Intel retail deal, so it will be interesting to see how that goes on this board

According to SSD Life Pro: Estimated lifetime is 9 years for a 128GB Crucial M4. Take that with a grain of salt. My Agility 3 on the other hand...failed. Can't be detected, fml.

Sandforce FTL. I've been recommending against the SF-series powered SSD's since the first news of trouble came around. Their performance was also mainly concentrated in quick IOPS.

Crucial M4 or Intel SSD's are the way to go for reliability and speed that is just as fast.

Intel SSD's had an issue too where a crash would render the drive to report 8mb capacity

My first gen sandforce SSD has been working perfectly since I got it last year. Haven't installed my newer one yet but a firmware update fixes any issues that you may have heard of.

Asus N53SV-DH71
i7-2670 2.2ghz
4gb ram + 4gb upgrade for only $18
750 GB hd, 15.6" screen.
2 year factory warranty which covers accidental drops, spills, fire, and Surge.
Got it for $950 including ram upgrade. damn sweet laptop. Was tempted to get a Zenbook, but might get one down the road or get the Prime tablet.

the z68 v pro is a great board. i got it for my most recent build. really easy to connect your case pins as well with the extension thingy for the motherboard headers. one of the great things that asus does even though it's so minor

ive got the Z68 Vpro as well, its a pretty decent looking board as well, lucky enough randomly most of the components i bought have the same blue in them so it matches pretty well

also glad i bought the Crucial M4 after reading this page

is there any sort of test you can run to test the write ability of the SSD? or should i even be worried with a couple month old SSD?

Sandforce drives aren't nearly as bad as people make them out to be. If you don't notice problems immediately, you can be 99% sure you won't have the problems people talk about (at least on your current system)

I actually DID have the problems, but they went away with the last firmware.

Just use a program like HD Tune if you really want to, but just know that the tests do use up a bit of your write cycles so don't run it too much. The M4 doesn't drop in speed by much, it has a TRIM-like feature that's very effective.

If stability is a concern to you, I suggest take a look at Plextor M2P SSDs.

I find it faster than M4 across same period (granted they ran different stuff, so, I can't say it's an identical comparison, but they both run 24/7) and less problem right out of box (4*m4 vs 8*M2P, one M4 had to be RMA'd while all 8 M2P have been flawless since we started using about 2 month ago)

The Plextor uses the same controller as the Crucial, but it uses Toggle flash instead of synchronous flash. Performance should be roughly the same, but your anecdotal RMA experience is probably not really relevant.

Thx for the help brahs, placed my order now that exams are over
I decided to make some changes since most of my stuff really was overkill
Ended up going with AMD 1090T + M5A99X mobo, A70 cooling and 550Ti

Also got a seagate 1tb barracuda... it was the same price as the 500gb wd black. Just hope it works

Planning to pick up an ssd for OS Win 7 and possibly for few games .. ie BF3..
this Christmas

Would 60 gb be enough?
or should I just go big and get 120 so I will have nothing to worry about later on.!!
