SSD cloned and installed in my laptop. No issues, just speedy bliss. Bootup is not as fast as the Plextor in my desktop though, off by about 2 seconds or so, but can't complain.

I have a pretty old setup E8400 3.0 (OC to 4.0ghz) and 2 560 Ti's (passed on from my brother.. before that it was a 4870) and 4gb ram. Anyway, should I debate upgrading to a quad core or just swap over to the new socket? Maybe more ram? I'm still LGA 775 and I really dont want to spend too much money. I would think the CPU is bottlenecking the GPUS at the moment.

I got a corsair 650w psu which i hope is still enough. I don't really follow whats up with computer technology anymore and it seems to always change :lol any suggestions?

yeah CPU may be a concern and possibly need more RAM
give it a try first before you upgrade though...you might be surprised to squeeze by with a decent 40fps or so
if you do upgrade then there's no point in sticking with that old ass socket

Looking to upgrade my 4850 video card. Any recommendations for a budget of $250? I don't do hardcore gaming, but would still want something decent to last for a couple of years.

just ordered all the parts from my previous post. Decided to stick to air cooling for now and got the 212 EVO instead of the H100i. Excited to finally get a computer up and running again.

Just got my ssd from amazon

Ghetto installed it (sort of just floating on other wires LOL, removed the sata cables on the cd drive and put that on my spinny drive.

Dat ssd speed! Now I can actually turn off my computer at night, turning it on feels like its just been sleeping rather than off, highly recommend

ForbiddenX 04-19-2014 12:39 PM

Nice! That's another good benefit about SSDs ;) can't pretty much put it anywhere since no moving parts!

I got mine for $169 minus $20 mail-in rebate + Batman Arkham Origins.

Yeah they bumped the price up to $229 again. At the time of posting it was $194.99 -$20MIR....I've seen it as low as $174.99+the -$20MIR before so I shall patiently wait for the drop in price.

Try connecting the ssd your trying to retrieve the files on as a secondary drive on another PC if that is possible, then you can drag out the files you need to save

Hey guy, i'm looking for some opinions on what to build.

I've been out of computer for a couple years now so i haven't paid attention to the prices until now.

Anyways, my dads computer died so i'm going to build another for him.
It's used for very basic office work/ streaming.

I will be reusing the following:
-case, video card, cd drive, (mouse, keyboard monitor), power supply.

So i'll be needing:
-cpu, mobo, ram, HD.

Any suggestions on what can be built for $250-$300 range(maybe a little more if needed)?

Thanks!

Traum 04-20-2014 11:59 PM

Depending on how old your dad's dead PC is, you may or may not be able to re-use many of the items you have listed above. What kind of connection interface standard do the items you plan on re-using have? The PSU, in particular, may very well be out-dated, and not have the required / sufficient number of connections the current motherboards require.

You'll need to know what board layouts fit the case as well.

Any recommendations on a good affordable entry level CPU? Need to replace the stupid Pentium 4 at the shop. Just need it to be able to run a few programs and videos at the same time.

Thanks!

If you're on a budget. Grab a CPO from IBM. Free shipping. 7 day return. 90 day warranty.

There's currently a ThinkCentre M57 (C2D E6550 2.33Ghz / 4GB RAM / 160GB HD / Win7 Pro) for $165. Coupon code: ibmepp brings it down to $130.

Thanks for the suggestion. Thinking in the 400ish range. Don't really want used nor something too old.

I'm using a quad core Q6600 as a secondary computer and it's still rather laggy for youtube.

The new one without the UHD screens are out.....

With the new UHD screen it's going to run you 2.2k, had one on order since December... still no delivery... canceled it for a Razer 13".... and now that shit is delayed.

If you're going to replace the computer, might as well format it first and see if it brings it back to acceptable performance.

Or

Buy an SSD, put it into the old computer. That way you have your files from the old computer still backed up. If it's still laggy, you can use the SSD towards the new computer. However, if the SSD is going into the Pentium4 computer, I wouldn't bother and replace the entire thing. If the SSD is going into the Q6600, it's worth a shot.

Or

Option buy a replacement
Spoiler!
