I want faster speed (particularly at multi-tasking and running multiple programs at once). I do some light gaming also. I'm stuck between upgrading my ram to 8gb ($90) or buy a new crucial 256gb SSD ($129). PC is about 4 years old, I don't want to buy a new PC if I don't have to. What would be the best bang for the buck at this point (price per performance wise)?

Get the SSD, probably the best upgrade one can get for their computer imo. You will instantly feel the difference.

willystyle 07-25-2014 05:00 PM

Will do that. Thank you.

Also, would it be better to start fresh with Windows or clone my system drive to the ssd?

lilaznviper 07-25-2014 05:14 PM

^fresh start with windows is always the best

Purely 07-25-2014 05:22 PM

+1 to fresh start as well

underscore 07-25-2014 09:20 PM

I've only seen bad things happen when cloning from a mechanical to SSD.

Razor Ramon HG 07-25-2014 09:39 PM

I cloned a HDD to an SSD with no problems. Just have to make sure you do it correctly.

SkinnyPupp 07-25-2014 10:10 PM

Cloning is fine, I think I am on my 4th cloned drive right now. I use R-Drive Image. It's free for 1 month or something, and works fantastic.

Mobo: Gigabyte z97MX Gaming 5 microATX $149.99 (ME)

CPU: intel i5 4690k $ 249.99 (NCIX)

Heatsink: Be Quiet! Shadow Rock 2 $29.99 (NCIX)

Ram: Kingston HyperX fury Red 1600mhz CL10 $84.99

GPU: Asus GTX760 DirectCU II 2GB $229.99

Storage: Samsung 840 Evo 250gb $140

PSU: Corsair CX750 or CS750 $120-150

what do you guys think ?
anything I can improve on or change around

z3german 07-26-2014 12:48 PM

What would be the lowest you think I should go 600w ?

twitchyzero 07-26-2014 12:58 PM

a quality 500w is probably enough...but 550-600 doesn't hurt

Gary Oak 07-27-2014 02:22 PM

ended up going with cx600 thanks for suggestion:woot2:

Razor Ramon HG 07-30-2014 10:08 AM

If anyone needs a mSATA drive for their notebook, I got a 120GB Samsung 840 EVO for sale. It gets 530/520 read and writes.

Got a MacBook again so it doesn't fit. Will trade it for a PNY StorEdge or Transcend JetDrive Lite.

any SSD at 50cent/GB is a decent buy and will make your aging system 100x snappier

Any know where I can get a good dual monitor mount/stand?

Or have any recommendations?

Done. SSD FTW! Not sure if it's because of the clean slate, or because of the SSD speed but computer feels new again!

sorry, i know i've asked this before but i want to double check and get some input on this.

so according to CPU-Z, my ram is 9-9-9-24 PC3-10700 (667MHz) @ 1.5V in slot #1 and slot #3. I have ASRock Z77 Extreme4 mobo.

i tried ordering the exact same brand for slot #2 and 4 but NCIX said it would be over a month before the ram arrives once they've placed the order.

they recommended me http://www.ncix.com/detail/kingston-...78421-1248.htm

any input on this brand/type of ram and will it work optimally for my mobo?

Keycaps are kinda meh...
got it on a sale for like $100.. wouldn't pay that much more tho.

There s RGB backlight version coming out soon..so the regular one would hopefully drop in price
