Bought a nice and snazzy mITX with this chip today.

EVGA Hadron Air mITX + built-in 500W PSU
Intel G3258 + ASUS H81I-Plus
4GB Corsair DDR3
ASUS R9 270
Samsung EVO 840 120GB SSD

Was a pain in the ass to install because the case is tiny and there's so many wires. Managed to make it look real nice and tidy with zip ties I had lying around.

I got the G3285 stable at 4.5GHz and 1.275v. Temperatures don't go over 75 degrees with a Zalman CNPS5X heatsink with Prime95 testing.

I ran PassMark and got a score of CPU score of 4688. This places the G3285 OC close to the i3-4130 (4813). G3285 stock is 4027.

CPU and heatsink was 72 and heatsink was 17 dollars at NCIX. With a $10 MIR for the heatsink, that brings the combo to roughly $80. I would definitely take this over the i3-4130 that costs $40 more.

Only gripe with the machine is that the ASUS H81I-Plus and the Zalman CNPS5X aren't a good choice together as the heatsink cuts into the two RAM slots. You'll probably want to use those godly 30nm Samsung Green DDR3L RAM that are half the size of regular RAM or a different heatsink.

GF's PC has the following mobo: http://www.ncix.com/detail/asrock-97...3-94-72135.htm

The mobo has a bunch of fan plugs and comes with speed management software. All the fans are 3 pin, and all the plugs are 3 pin EXCEPT for the one for the main case fan, which is 4 pin. With the 3 pin fan plugged into the 4 pin plug, the software has no effect and it runs at full speed all the time and is loud as fuck. The fan can be controlled just fine if I move it to a 3 pin plug (so I know the fan is okay), but the temp control only affects the main fan.

Does this sound like a software bug, or is this a problem with having a 3 pin fan on a 4 pin plug? If it's hardware, is there anything I can do to make it work or do I need to buy a new case fan?

It's normal.

The only difference between three and four pin fans is that the extra pin allows PWM control via the motherboard. Traditionally, three pin fans are controlled by voltage as opposed to the motherboard for four pins. And as your three pin fan is missing the fourth pin, it cannot be controlled by your motherboard's fan control software (as it's only compatible with four pin PWM fans).

On certain motherboards, three pin fans can go into a four pin slot as the motherboard allows voltage control. My Z97I-Plus is an example of this (both my chassis fans are three pins and slotted in a four pin slot). You can double check the motherboard BIOS for this.

The easiest solution would most likely be to get a new fan though.

I have a NAS storage to put all my media on so i can share them on my network and mobile devices. The NAS has 4 TB of storage.
I went with the 120GB HyperX SSD for the OS, the other SSD for application installs, then the 500 for misc crap, then the storage and backups will be going onto the NAS

Buy a cheap one from CL and try it out.

That's what I had to do while I waited for my PSU to RMA.

Buy a replacement PSU from NCIX.

You'll either have fixed your problem, or you'll just take a 15% restocking fee (chump change).

If you don't mind the drive, ME doesn't have restocking fees AFAIK.

If you're unsure about opening up your computer, I'm free for a bit on Wednesday and you can bring it over and I'll take a look at it for you (bring a spare PSU while you're at it).

Damn.. bought some Coolermaster Sickleflow fans with blue LEDs. I thought they would light up the case, but they only really light up the fan.. Going to buy some LED strips instead.

On side note, NCIX has a refurbished Linksys router for $20 - http://www.ncix.com/detail/linksys-e...83752-1011.htm

I bought one and it tripled the speeds of my secondary router from 1600kB/s to 5800kB/s

still dealing with ncix with my ram order....

i have 2 sticks of ram being used right now @ 1.5V. if i pick up another 2 sticks thats running at 1.7V, will it be a problem?

i am given these 2 options:

http://www.ncix.com/detail/kingston-...b-03-78398.htm

http://www.ncix.com/detail/kingston-...s-30-88587.htm

the only difference i see is the memory speed (1600 vs 1333) and voltage (1.7V vs 1.5V)

any input? i am leaning towards the hyperx black

Check things like BIOS settings and any software that came with your mobo, the ASRock in le gf's machine has a "quick boot" option but after a couple months it glitched out and would just reboot the machine every time you tried to shut it off.

My mITX build is finally complete with all the bells and whistles.

Might throw a LED strip in there and sleeve the PSU when I get a chance.

Killing time on NCIX, and have a build list for those looking for a budget PC.

About $425 after pricematch and taxes. Throw in a cheap video card from Craigslist or whatever and you have a very decent budget gaming computer.

With the G3258, you'll probably want to overclock it. Although each CPU contains different silicon, someone else with the same motherboard was able to hit 4GHz on 1.2v (the max voltage that Gigabyte allows). Therefore, I included the Hyper 212 into the build because it's better and quieter than your stock cooler at load (although you may be able to get away with the stock cooler if you're on a really tight budget). I have mine on 4.5GHz at 1.285v stable with the ASUS Z97I-PLUS and it's plenty fast enough until I upgrade with a Broadwell chip later on.

And if you don't want the SSD, you can get this instead and save $30 - Toshiba DT01ACA100 1TB SATA3 7200RPM 32MB Cache 3.5in Internal Hard Disk Drive HDD
