your typical NHL or fifa will run on your PC just as long as your PS4/XB1 because they reuse the same engine for like 7 years +

if i can keep it under 1000 that would be awesome, i dont need those crazy fancy keyboard mouse combos, but i will need a monitor.
(All items are in-stock at NCIX, use references for pricematching)

Antec One Case - 49.99 @ ComputerValley
XFX PRO550W PSU - 52.99 MIR @ NCIX
Intel i5-4590 - 209.99 @ Newegg
Gigabyte H97M-D3H - 94.99 @ Newegg
ADATA XPG V2 8GB - 82.98 @ DirectCanada
Samsung 840 Evo Series 120GB SSD - 82.89 @ DirectCanada
Western Digital Caviar Blue 1TB - 57.99 @ Newegg
Zalman CNPS5X Performa - 12.99 MIR @ NCIX
3x Be Quiet! Pure Wings 120MM - 23.97 @ NCIX

Subtotal = 683.78
Total w/ Taxes = 765.83
MIR Total = 15.00

If you wanted to save a bit more, the ASRock H87M-PRO4 which is essentially the same feature-wise as the Gigabyte board is 71.98 after MIR at NCIX. I left it out as I wasn't sure if you wanted to go through with such a big MIR. You can also omit the SSD, but having one really makes a night and day difference for everyday computing speed-wise.

Anyways, assuming you go with strictly the build at the top, that leaves you around 250 for a video card and a monitor.

Since the case supports video cards up to 10.5", I'd go with a used R9 270 on Craigslist. They can be found anywhere from about 80-100 and offer great performance for the price. Brand doesn't really matter, but I'd stick to ASUS or Gigabyte ones as I've had positive personal experiences with them.

With 150 to spare, you can spend that on a monitor of your choice. Monitor deals seem to happen weekly on RFD so try to stay up to date. A recent deal passed by for a 24" Samsung monitor for 120.

EDIT: By the way, I'm trying to sell off some RAM and two fans. If interested, please PM me.

^ Personally I'd take an ASRock mobo over a GB one, and I'd tone down the CPU to get a better monitor. Also be careful ordering from Newegg as their Canadian site ships some stuff from the US.

Since it's already mid October I'd wait for Black Friday/Cyber Monday and grab a barebones bundle online, snag a midrange graphics card that's on sale and an SSD.

I couldn't disagree more with this. The VRM on ASROCK boards are known to be sometimes OK, sometimes crap, where the gigabyte ones are solid no matter what price range you're buying in.

Both boards should be fine for this build seeing as there won't be any OCing done to strain them.

The only reason I recommend the Gigabyte over the ASRock was not because of performance (since both will operate the same) but because I wasn't sure if he wanted to wait on a $45 MIR.

And as for the choice of processor, it's either the i5-4460 or i5-4590 if you're not overclocking. With the difference being $10, you might as well get the latter. For something the OP will use for a few years, I didn't even bother considering an i3 nor did I consider an AM3+ build.

The parts list was made using NCIX. The different vendors are listed so he could pricematch them.

You don't have to overclock to want more durable VRM components.

Any reason why you wouldn't go with an AM3+ setup? Regardless of AMD/Intel preference my main rule is to be sure the cpu is in the lower to mid range for the socket so it's less of a hassle when you need to upgrade.

I can't speak on the VRM, I'm going off of the extra features the ASRock I have offers over the Gigabyte board in my other PC, along with the fact that the few features the GB board has don't actually work.

Seeing that you're doing a budget/mid-entry build, I'd go with AMD FX-6300 on AM3+ instead. It's a better price-to-performance ratio, other then that, it looks legit.

Yeah, good point. But I personally don't find the durability worth shelling out an extra $25 if both boards perform fine at stock. ASRock has come a long way and my recent ASRock Z87 Extreme4 purchase has left me very satisfied.

There is no reason to go with a AMD at all if you're looking for a general computing and gaming computer. The only reason you'd go with AMD is if you're running heavily-threaded applications, otherwise Intel wins in all other usages as well as power consumption.

RAM so expensive
better grab K series if you're spending $200+ on CPU
something tells me you can do better than a 270 on a $1K build...but since you're only doing sports games i'd recommend 750 Ti and be done with it

The Phantom 240 is a full-size ATX case.

You probably want a full-size board otherwise there's going to be a space left between the motherboard and PSU.

Otherwise it will look like this..

And since it seems like you want a window case, you have to be aware of the colour of your components.

Red RAM on a black board with yellow heatsinks is a no-no IMO. Best to stick with one or two colours. For example, my PC is black and white (I'll upload pics later). I recommended the ADATA XPG because it's a neutral black and will fit in most situations just fine.

Also, the Phantom 240 is one fucking huge case. My cousin has it, and for most users, it's overkill.

I'd recommend the Corsair 350D if you're going mATX (http://www.ncix.com/detail/corsair-o...k-43-81477.htm) and the NZXT S340 if you're going ATX (which is the same case I use/comes in white as well) (http://www.ncix.com/detail/nzxt-sour...-ad-100441.htm).

NCIX currently has this board open-box at their warehouse for $90. It's missing accessories, but it doesn't state what accessories. You only really need the motherboard and IO shield. MSI Z87-G45 Gaming ATX LGA1150 Z87 3PCI-E16 4PCI-E1 CrossFireX/SLI SATA3 4K HDMI USB3.0 Motherboard - This would be a good board if you want to go with a black/red scheme. Would fit well with the G.Skill RAM you linked.

You can see all their open-box stuff here - https://docs.google.com/spreadsheets...xZY/edit#gid=0

The R9 270 is much better than a 750TI and easily found used on Craigslist, which is why I recommended it over the 750TI.

been looking for a replacement ssd and came along and found this.

http://www.amazon.ca/Crucial-2-5-Inc...3710248&sr=1-1

any opinions on brand, performance, etc would be helpful. it comes to about .46c/gb. also, are newer gen SSDs coming out that may be pushing down the price on older models?

IIRC, Crucial m500 was decidedly not fast (among SSDs) even back when it was first released.

I also noticed that NCIX is currently selling the drive for $131 this week:

http://www.ncix.com/detail/crucial-m...81655-1246.htm

Perhaps you can try getting them to do a price patch for you?

thanks for all the input! every idea is helping me!

mind you I'm still just putting pieces together without too much knowledge, just getting a base to start.

i looked at the nzxt s340 but after watching youtube it seems like i don't have a way to put in an optical drive, thats why i looked at the p240.

Workstation computer?

Anyways, the only real thing that I see that you could change is swapping out for a AX860i instead. There's no need to get a 1200W unless you're doing 3-way Crossfire and 860W is more than enough if you decide to throw in another GTX860.

SSD and I'd suggest going for a 4K monitor. They are cheap enough now and there is no turning back from higher definition.

Either that or get a larger monitor (realestate wise). I have a 34" LG 34UM94 and it's just incredible how much more productive one can be. Even for entertainment is good. No more black bars when watching movie.

Good to know. Can save me over a hundred bucks. Thank you.

Already have a couple. One I plan to use for the OS etc. Other I will put frequently played games on it.

I will check them out too. For whatever reason 4K didn't even enter my radar when thinking about screens.

Thanks a bunch

Recently did a case swap and decided to change up some parts from my old mITX build.

NZXT S340
Seasonic G-550
Intel i5-4590
Corsair H100i
XFX R9 280X

I used pre-sleeved PSU extension cables from Silverstone and Bitfenix as well as Corsair AF/SP fans with rings to give it that white contrast.

For those with longer GPUs that sag, see if you can spot that support pillar I MacGyver'd out of black Legos

The Lego Store wouldn't give or sell just several pieces so I ended up buying a small $12 tub worth of black Lego..

You can have some if you want as I think I have enough to make like 4-5 more stands. I don't know what I'm going to do with them

I couldn't even recognize the lego stand...just hope that won't melt. I 'm surprised a card like 280x will sag

i'd get this then upgrade to 32-64GB+ maybe 2 years later

Also, 980 Strix SLI doesn't seem worth it at $1400

get 3-way 970 SLI for $1000...i'm sure you can do the same or better on AMD but I'm not too familiar with CFX peformance on the Hawaii cards

i'd also look into custom cooling over the H100i if you're into that stuff...esp if you're serious with SLI because most new cards will dump hot air into the case unless you get the reference designs

if you're not going 4K route....maybe buy a G-sync monitor...or 3?
