Had a G3258. Easily overclocked it to 4.5GHz at 1.285v stable. Great performance for a $65 chip. I used a $20 Zalman cooler with it and had max temps of 75 degrees with Prime95 Small-FFT test. Realistically, it wouldn't have gone over 60 degrees during normal usage and gaming.

Pair it with any cheap motherboard that's not Gigabyte. Gigabyte has the voltage on their boards locked to 1.2v for overclocking the G3258.

is the GeForce GTX 970 worth getting? debating between that card and the 290/290X

twitchyzero 11-16-2014 01:14 PM

yes...970 is the go-to card right now
esp if the 290 is reference design

Razor Ramon HG 11-16-2014 05:54 PM

Picked up the new MSI Z97S Krait at Memory Express on Friday.

I then spent most of yesterday painting the cable bar in my case, the video card shroud, and the H100i bracket white.

Now I got a slick black and white system.

If anyone is looking to get a new i7-4790K for a good deal, a redditor is doing a proxy service for them as they're on sale right now at Microcenter for 249.99.

It's about $275USD + $3 for bank transfer or $11 for credit card transfer + currency conversion. Ends up being around $320-330 shipped. Beats paying $400 ~ here.

You only get the CPU though for that price. It'll be a bit extra for him to ship the whole box with the cooler.

[META] Math! How much will ___ combo cost me? : Microcenterproxy

Sick build Razor. What paint did you use? I failed painting my last project and gave up with my recent builds.

Razor Ramon HG 11-19-2014 12:12 AM

I used Montana Gold Shock White with Rustoleum Ultra Cover Gloss for the top coat.

However, the white came out a little yellow/creamy despite it being "pure white" according to the RGB and HEX codes of R255 G255 B255 and #FFFFFF. The colour is noticeable when you compare it with the rest of the white in my case.

I'm going to sand it down and try a different brand of spray paint.

My GPU fans also make an irritable noise at certain fan speeds. Planning to get the NZXT G10 bracket + Kraken cooler to fix it.

Also, NZXT actually shared my build on their official Facebook page, which was cool - https://www.facebook.com/nzxtcorp/po...54870639215301

How about asrock, they seem to have the cheapest mobo in town, around $42, good to buy?

Razor Ramon HG 11-19-2014 02:17 AM

The BTC mining one? I hear it's shit, but people have OC'd with it.

asian_XL 11-19-2014 10:29 PM

^ these are the cheap mobos I found

AsRock H81M-DGS R2.0
AsRock H81M-HG4
MSI H81M-P33

Razor Ramon HG 11-20-2014 12:40 AM

I'd go with either ASRock ones. Haven't looked up the differences, but the boards should be very similar. People have achieved 4.5GHz ~ OCs on them.

Intel Retail Edge program is going to be up on December 3.

i7-4790K:
• Rock Legend: $79.00 USD
• Rockstar: $99.00 USD
• Producer: $114.00 USD

i7-5930K:
• Rock Legend: $159.00 USD
• Rockstar: $179.00 USD
• Producer: $194.00 USD

+ 36USD for shipping.

Ends up being around $170 with current exchange rate for the 4790K with the lowest Retail Edge status.

I can probably sell my i5-4590 for that price, woot.

I'm in the market for a new monitor but something more geared towards FPS gaming. Can anyone tell me if the BENQ XL2420Z would be a good choice? Seems like a decent deal on Amazon.

Manic! 11-24-2014 02:42 PM

I'm thinking about buying parts for 2 computers as presents for my niece and nephews and have them build them over Christmas. Ages 11 to 13 and they like to play games like minecraft. I want to keep the price under $500 if possible and that they can upgrade down the road. This is what I am thinking:

Case: $50 or less
500 watt PSU
4 gigs ram
128 GB SSD
CPU: Intel G3258, AMD 6300 6 core, or a A10
Sub $100 MB
Videocard?

Or maybe a bundle like this:Computer Parts, PC Components, Laptop Computers, Digital Cameras and more - Newegg.ca
Or this: Computer Parts, PC Components, Laptop Computers, Digital Cameras and more - Newegg.ca

Hoping for some good BF deals. Any suggestions?

Razor Ramon HG 11-24-2014 02:53 PM

Case/PSU - Cooler Master Elite 350 w/ 500W PSU
CPU - Intel G3258
Motherboard - ASUS H81M-A
RAM - Any generic 4GB DDR3-1600
SSD - Any on sale that's not the Kingston V300

That'll run you about $350 after taxes. Leaves you a $100 headroom for a video card.

Minecraft will run fine on the integrated graphics. Get DDR3-1600 if you can instead of 1333. Integrated graphics love faster RAM.

If they want to play anything more intensive, just be aware that the PSU only has a single 6-pin PCI-E power plug.

You'll probably want to get something like a 750TI (doesn't require additional power) or a 7850 (requires a 6-pin).

Samsung EVO 840 250GB SSD $150
MSI Z97 Gaming 5 ATX LGA1150 Motherboard $160

I'm trying to build my first rig and was aiming at $1000 price point but went a bit over budget, what would you guys recommend me to change? AMD FX-8350, Gigabyte GeForce GTX 970, Antec Eleven Hundred V2 - System Build - PCPartPicker Canada

StylinRed 11-27-2014 09:55 PM

Helping my friend build an HTPC on the budget

what do you guys think of the

Intel Pentium Anniversary unlocked 3.2ghz dual core http://www.ncix.com/detail/intel-pen...97890-1029.htm $70

coupled with the ASROCK Z97 anniversary matx motherboard http://www.ncix.com/detail/asrock-z9...98416-1029.htm $75

asrock says it can automatically boost the chip to 4.2/4.8ghz (there are two different graphics stating different values)

he's only going to be using it as an htpc no gaming so that seems like a great pairing?

Razor Ramon HG 11-27-2014 10:37 PM

Here's my recommended HTPC build.

Apex Mi-008
Gigabyte GA-C1037UN
2GB DDR3
2TB WD Green

Everything comes to just a bit under $300.

He can save a few extra bucks by going with a 1TB drive.

StylinRed 11-27-2014 10:48 PM

Well im giving him an old case of mine + psu/fans and he says he wants to use his external hard drive (i think its just 500gb oO) so he needs some ram/mb/cpu

i'll recommend him something cheaper, if that combos $ :)

it doesnt look like ncix carries the Gigabyte GA-C1037UN
