did i goof in buying a r7 260x? it was pretty cheap

RESN 01-21-2015 08:49 PM

I put my RAM and processor into my motherboard and plugged it into my PSU to see if everything works. Nothing turns on, so I tried the paperclip test on PSU and my PSU is in running order. Im wondering if it's my motherboard that isn't working or is my PSU not powerful enough?

These are the parts I have:
Gigabyte Z97MX-Gaming 5
GEForce GTX 750
Intel i5 4690k
Gskill ripjawsX 8gb x 2
Thermaltake 500W PSU

Razor Ramon HG 01-22-2015 01:34 AM

Why did you get a mid-range board and CPU with a budget video card and PSU?

Double check all your power connections to the board. You need both a 24 pin and a 8 pin cable connected to the board.

If that doesn't work, try turning it on with just the motherboard, CPU and one stick of RAM connected. Try RAM in all four slots.

And if that doesn't work, test your parts outside the case on top of the motherboard box.

anyone have a recommendation for laptops on the market right now? something just for school really...

saw your laptop for sale razor, just one question. did you carry around a portable harddrive ?

Razor Ramon HG 01-22-2015 01:23 PM

Nope, I just used it for school. I only store school work on the main hard drive and all my other files on the microSD, so I didn't buy a second HDD.

Works well for typing up documents, browsing the web, 1080p videos, and Hearthstone. Screen angles and colours are pretty good for a $200 laptop.

Only reason I'm selling the laptop is because I like the new Dell XPS 13 (although I'm not sure if it's a smart buy since I'm going to be using it for the same things, it's just that I want it, lol)

Dell is sending me an eval unit of the new xps13. Can't wait to try it out. Though I doubt I'll switch over from my surface pro 3.

Actually picked one up today, and gotta say that I love it.

Verdasco 01-23-2015 11:09 PM

anyone know where i can get one? memory express and ncix doesnt stock it :"(

Akinari 01-24-2015 12:38 AM

Kinda bummed out I can't play Titanfall maxed out at 1080p at anything more than 45fps :okay:

Got a 7950 and a PII965BE at 3.8GHz. Is it finally time to swap the old tank of a processor out for something like an FX-6300?

Not worth it. Those FX-6300 processors aren't that much faster than your 965BE. On the other hand, maybe see if you can score a 1090T or 1045T for cheap and OC?

Mini DisplayPort, no HDMI

But the Intel HD5500 supports 4K, so should be fine

see.lai 01-25-2015 11:13 PM

so im planning on building a new computer soon and I sorta have no idea on what to do..

I'm not looking to spend much but here's an idea of what I thiink I should get, CPU and graphic card wise.

i5-4690
msi gtx 660 or msi r9 290x (they both have $100 mail in rebates right now, and are on sale at ncix, i know the gtx 660 is also 2 years old..) was also reading reviews about the new gtx960 and everybody was bashing on it .. so i guess that's out of the question
500gb samsung 840 evo ssd (on sale at mem express)
motherboard im not quite sure yet, probably something like z97
something like a 600watt power supply ( not sure if that's enough)

I'm not looking for a top of the line pc, probably wouldn't mind upgrading graphic cards later on in the future as well.. I'm coming from an ati radeon 4850. I play mostly dota, BUT i may be open to newer games as they come out.. maybe not as intense as those fps games though..

twitchyzero 01-25-2015 11:20 PM

a 80+ or better 600w is more than plenty
290x is miles ahead of the 660 and in completely different league...but if it's reference design it's loud and hot.
post your resolution and if you have any plans to upgrade the monitor

Razor Ramon HG 01-26-2015 09:37 PM

An i3-4150 + R9 270 would be more than sufficient for gaming at 1080p especially if DOTA is what you'll be running.

see.lai 01-26-2015 10:53 PM

hm, thanks for the suggestions. I'm hoping this next PC will last another 5 years at least..

5 years? A gaming PC that will stay relevant for that long will cost you an arm and a leg. 3 years is more realistic, and even then you'd have to spend quite a bit.

Back in 2011, $800 would've netted you a video card such as the GTX 590. Nowadays, a R9 280X for around $200 matches it without all the extra noise and heat.

I'd sell my 290x + cooler if theres a good deal on the asus GTX 970 :)

Why Nvidia's GTX 970 slows down when using more than 3.5GB VRAM - PC Gamer

TOS'd 01-27-2015 02:37 PM

Had much troubles with the 290x and the black screen flicker/restart. Ended up getting GTX 970 and its been smooth sailing thus far.

What's a reliable SSD brand to buy right now?

heisenberg 01-27-2015 05:11 PM

Does anyone have recommendations on laptop sleeves? The screen size is 15.6inches but corner to corner its like 17.5inches
