Made a purchase on NCIX on the 25th, day of that online boxing sale. Haven't built a new computer in a long time.. Maybe about 5-6 years so quite out of the game with computers.

Any comments or suggestions on the parts I bought? I did a fair bit of research before purchasing, but just want to know what others think.

Gigabyte Z68X-UD3H-B3 ATX LGA1155 Z68
Intel Core i7 2600K
OCZ Z-SERIES 1000W 80+ Gold
Powercolor Radeon HD 6970
Kingston HyperX 120GB SF-2281
Corsair Vengeance 16GB 4X4GB DDR3-1600

Came to ~$1400 with the case.

Hondaracer 12-27-2011 07:20 PM

not sure about the OCZ PSU, from the research i did i pretty much went with a more expensive/lower watt corsair PSU than a higher watt other brand personally

Is it common to hear your hard drive kind of "start up" sometimes when directly accessing the content on that HD? all my OS etc. is installed on my SSD, but say I open explorer and explore the 1TB caviar black which is just storage, if its quiet in my room i can hear it kind of "start up" ?

yes it is normal because your storage drive isn't normally used so when you do "random access" on a file or whatnot, the hard drive has to spin up (your caviar black is a mechanical drive, it has moving parts unlike the SSD), so that is why you will hear your hard drive

however, you can minimaze those noise by buying shock absorbers that are like washers so they minimize the vibration from the hdd to the case

make sure u know if the port is AGP or PCI-E
if its AGP you'll have the best luck in the buy&sell section on RS or craigslist

I've got a problem

when i press the power button on my new computer it will light up for 1 second the fans will start to move and then the comp immediately shuts off (it won't reach the point of beeping either)

any clues? everything is brand new....

going to try a different power supply but :/

StylinRed 12-28-2011 06:09 PM

SkinnyPupp 12-28-2011 06:15 PM

try different ram, different cpu

StylinRed 12-28-2011 06:19 PM

argh such a pita

yeah the ram was the first thing i did and that was a no go

then the power supply thats a no go

ill try that battery on the mobo next

and then probably leave it till next year and then deal with the trying a different cpu ;)

cuz ill have to grab the one off of my dads comp and he's going on a bf3 marathon atm -_-

dn53 12-28-2011 08:00 PM

one time i had the same problem. Did you mount the copper extensions onto the case before mounting the mobo (forgot what theyre called). Remounted it properly and it started up a-ok.

just googled it-- theyre called stand offs.

StylinRed 12-28-2011 08:19 PM

ah the mobo posts yea got all those in

after trying a diff cpu im just gonna bring the whole thing in to memoryexpress (bleh richmond)

You sure you have all the power cable plug into the motherboard? Check your board to see if you have a different ATX12v input "might be a four pin plug" located somewhere else on the motherboard. If it doesn't boot past post it usually mean is not getting enough power.

StylinRed 12-28-2011 09:32 PM

it doesnt even enter post i dont think

it immediately shuts off after the power button is pressed except for like a split second the fans will start to spin/leds on and boom stop literally 1sec or less

i tried 2 PSU

a Antec 650w 80plus bronze
and a 750w coolermaster 80plus

both with the same results

the mobo

only 1 atx12v?

right now just waiting for my dad to hit the sack and ill try the cpu in his comp

striderblade 12-28-2011 09:35 PM

so the atx 12v is connected? Have you try resetting the cmos?
