Heatsinks with firmware, technology never ceases to amaze me.

Looking to sell? As a package probably not that much...

$200-250 CPU
$100-150 Mobo
$100-125 GPU
$60-80 PSU
$50-70 SSD
$40-60 RAM

Something along those lines, it's a rough estimate so have a look around. /r/hardwareswap and /r/canadianhardwareswap can be good references along with CL. I'm guessing $600-700 full package, maybe.

Comments or Suggestion on this build?
Intel Core i5-6500, EVGA GeForce GTX 750 Ti, Fractal Design Define R5 (Black) - System Build - PCPartPicker Canada

i5-6500 ($270)
MSI Z170A SLI Plus ($170)
2x8GB DDR4 ($85)
Samsung 850 EVO 250GB SSD ($120)
EVGA GTX 750 Ti ($150)
Fractal Design Define R5 ($125)
Total = $920

I have a spare 500w PSU at home.
Going to install window 10.

I am not sure if I should upgrade the vid card to a GTX 960 ($100 more).
All the games I play now are old and I can probably max out with the GTX 750 ti. (CS, SC2, L4D)

I wouldn't mind paying more now if the GTX960 can last a long time. (3-4yrs+) But I read some ppl suggest GTX 960 is in a bad spot because it is kinda stuck in the middle. (too much power for 1080p, not enough for 1440p, which is the resolution a lot of games are going toward?)

About $550. $600 max.

If you're not going to overclock the cpu or SLI gpus then you can step down to a H170 chipset motherboard. Otherwise, even the Gigabyte Z170-HD3 is a bit cheaper than your current choice. You can put the extra cash towards a 960 if you want it.

Intel Core i5-6500, XFX Radeon R9 380, Cooler Master N200 - System Build - PCPartPicker Canada
  • Intel Core i5-6500 3.2GHz Quad-Core Processor
  • Gigabyte GA-B150M-D3H Micro ATX LGA1151 Motherboard
  • G.Skill NT Series 16GB (2 x 8GB) DDR4-2133 Memory
  • Samsung 850 EVO-Series 250GB 2.5" Solid State Drive
  • XFX Radeon R9 380 4GB DD XXX OC Video Card
  • Cooler Master N200 MicroATX Mid Tower Case

This is a much more balanced build.

By getting a more basic motherboard and a cheaper case, you can get a R9 380 that will perform better than the GTX 960.

If you want, you can always scrounge around Craigslist for parts.
  • Intel Core i5-4690K
  • be quiet! Shadow Rock 2
  • Gigabyte Z87X-UD3H
  • ADATA XPG 8GB DDR3-1600
  • Samsung 850 EVO 500GB
  • XFX 650W P2 80+ Platinum
  • Fractal Design S

I recently built this using a mix of used and new parts for $900 all in. No video card yet as I'm waiting for a good deal on a GTX 970. Silent machine too.

edit for double posting.....

Mr.HappySilp 04-12-2016 08:00 AM

Should I upgrade my video card and RAM?
Currently I have 8GB of RAM
G.SKILL Ripjaws X F3-12800CL9D-8GBXL 8GB 2X4GB DDR3-1600 CL9-9-9-
And using this video card
MSI GeForce GTX 770 OC Twin Frozr IV 1098/1150MHZ 2GB 7GHZ GDDR5
What I found is that it boots into Windows fine but when playing video games (Blade and soul mostly is giving me issue and PoE a little bit no so much). The game just lags and graphic isn't as smooth. Like when going into a new area it takes a while to load up, I will not be able to see the NPC's or other players for a good 5 to 10 seconds Also during intense fights my ffps will go to shit (from 50 to 60fps to like 20 or lower). It this a video card/Ram issue? Or computer issue.
Other setup on this PC includes
NCIX Bundle Deal MSI Z87-GD65 Gaming ATX Motherboard & Intel Core
EVGA SuperNOVA NEX650G 650W Fully Modular ATX EPS12V Power Supply
Zalman CNPS9900A LED CPU Cooler 120mm Blue LED Fan LGA1150 1366 1
Boot drive
Intel 520 Series 120GB 2.5IN SSD MLC 25nm SATA3 Solid State Disk
I almost have a 2TB western digital for my files and games etc etc......

Reeyal 04-12-2016 11:59 AM

I think your CPU is the bottleneck of your setup. Intel i5 CPUs will run games adequately. If you want to run them well, you'll need an i7.
The GTX 770 seems to be OK with your games.
Adding more RAM doesn't hurt. Doubling your RAM might go a long way.

Akinari 04-23-2016 01:06 PM

Alright, after scouring through tons of forums and looking at various gaming benchmarks, I have finally decided to jump ship to Intel, long overdue so I can finally give my Phenom 965 BE build to my mum

Just bought a Gigabyte GA-Z170X-Gaming 5 mobo from NCIX open box for $165. Going to be going with an i5-6600K and G.Skill DDR4-3200 8GB of RAM.

Going to continue using my 7950 for now, until Nvidia or AMD's new stuff comes out then I'll see what I want to upgrade to. Otherwise if I see a very cheap 7950 I'll probably snag it and run Crossfire for the time being.

So happy to be finally dropping my ancient AM3 setup, more than anything I'm ecstatic about all the new mobo features LOL.

HonestTea 05-20-2016 08:33 PM

Any recommendations for a non-gaming desktop build? Budget around $500, mainly to watch HD/HQ movies, stream videos, and work related stuff(powerpoint, excel etc).

So far I bought the 256GB Samsung 850 PRO SSD for $130 and Crucial Ballistix Tactical Low Profile 8GB for $33. Do you think it's worth it to have 16GB or 8GB is plenty?

I'll need CPU, MOBO, Storage(1TB or 2TB), Video Card, Case and PSU.

Thanks in advance!

Skip the video card grab a Intel I3 CPU, A motherboard with the features you want, a 400 to 500 watt power supply. For a case the NZXT Source 340 is a great case that looks good and is very easy to work on.

Upgraded RAM from 8GB to 32GB man what a difference lol 32 is overkill but this is till be last upgrade to this rig before I get a new one.

i would say get 16gb as its really cheap to get memory now anyways.

I would skip the video card as well as majority of motherboards with built in video these days will be able to do HD movies no problem.

Jmac 06-03-2016 04:44 PM

I'm a little bit out of the loop, but my brother asked me to build him a gaming desktop for $800.

He's looking to play games @ 1080p and insists on a Core i5 for whatever reason (so we have to cheap out on all the core parts) and DDR4 memory. He won't be overclocking.

Looking for:
Case
Power Supply
Motherboard (LGA 1151)
CPU (Core i5)
DDR4 Memory
Graphics Card
Hard Drive/Solid State Drive (probably SSD)
DVD-RW

Any suggestions?

I'm building one right now for 800 but I'm using an i3. i5 will put an additional 100-150 on top so I think you're looking at 900-1000 to be honest.

Rough estimate:
case 50
psu 50
mobo 90
cpu 250
ram 50
graphics 300
hd 100
dvd 10
total: 900 (plus tax and windows)

Razor Ramon HG 06-03-2016 05:19 PM

Only way to do an i5 on a budget of $800 will be using used parts.
