rx 480 disappointed me with the high pricing and not so worth it FPS.... $100 less and I can get something similar used :/

should have waited for 1060..

Razor Ramon HG 07-12-2016 10:09 AM

For $260, I would take the 970.

The 1060 is going to cost around $375 to $400 pre-tax, but the performance difference doesn't warrant paying an extra 50-60%.

gtx 1060 is $249 USD which comes down to around $375.00 with the retail fixed pricing + USD conversion.

RX 480 was $199 USD and its around $350+ , fucking joke

$260.00 for EVGA GTX 970 is a steal for similar performance of RX 480

Also, there is a deal for 144hz acer 24inch monitor on amazon prime (sign up for free trial)

it is a big card and my monitor / mobo couldnt detect it for a long ass time until I plugged it in while the computer was running. Risky but it worked and read it instantly. I was scoping out deals the past week and $250.00 is a steal but the dude is in victoria (your post)

edit: i found a private seller for EVGA Gtx 970 from edmonton, $260 shipped, i declined his offer because i foudn a $250 GTX 970 ASUS STRIX off CL cheaper, guy gave me good ebay feedback so I trust him and from other computer forum , if anyone wants to buy off this guy, please pm me

What's backwards compatibility like for laptop drivers these days? If I need to run 7 Pro am I stuck just buying laptops that come preloaded with it or can I pick up a 8.1/10 laptop and load 7 on it without too much difficulty?

Akinari 07-25-2016 04:13 PM

Well my 7950 took a shit on me, starting showing symptoms consistent with overheated memory last night while browsing the web and idling listening to Spotify.

Vertical blue lines and squares for awhile, and then the screen blacked out shortly after.

Tried restarting a few times in safe mode, uninstalled and reinstalled all the drivers, was a little better, a checkerboard pattern with blue lines came and went, followed by flickering white lines, screen went black again. Restarted a few more times, then it got to the point where even during the startup BIOS and Windows boot screen there would be two huge vertical blue lines followed by red flickering artifacts. Then after a few more restarts, and reseating of the card, along with changing the HDMI cable and using the DVI as well, it just stopped showing anything beyond the BIOS and Windows boot screen.

I'm under the assumption that it is a hardware failure, as I haven't updated the graphics drivers recently and never has this happened before. Bloody XFX, at least break on me while I'm gaming or running the card intensively not at idle with all temps in check...and the previous owner I bought it from didn't fucking know to register it for lifetime warranty

In that case, GTX1060 or RX 480

Gonna start piecing the stuff together. Is black friday/cyber monday the best time?

I find Cyber Monday has pretty good deals if you can wait.

twitchyzero 07-26-2016 03:09 PM

I like to buy near a product's launch...the slight premium you pay for retail price is worth the $50-100 you might save from waiting 3-6 months and for product longevity/relevance. What good is waiting months for a 25% off sale only for the new products to come out 2 months later and be 40% faster?

Back to school usually has good deals but it's been a few years since I've shopped for hardware so before our dollar went to complete shit

this is interesting though

that's the risk of buying 2nd hand...you don't know if the previous owner is a noob at overclocking/keeping things ventilated. I've never heard of cards going bad during idle though. What's the temperature? If it's high you've tried cleaning the fans/new thermal paste?

Verdasco 07-26-2016 03:12 PM

GIGABYTE GTX 970 GAMING G1 nVIDIA GTX 970 card

rather get this gtx 970 for this price compared to $350+ rx 480 for similar frames

just bought a gtx 970 ASUS STRIX for same price, awesome performance

I bought it from my colleague who's also a PC gaming enthusiast, claims to have never been OC'd, idle temps are typically around 50 degrees. I clean my case once every two weeks or so, so no dust. Thermal paste might be dry.

Not sure if this is the right place to put this but don't want to create a new thread. I was looking into this and this looks pretty neat for only $99 too. What are your thoughts on this?

Have any of you guys picked up a laptop in the US before? It's seeming like you get a lot more for your money, even when you factor in the currency exchange. Unless these specs are wrong somehow this seems stupidly cheap.

Those specs are good actually. However, the i7 is a dual core with hyperthreading. A SSD, AC wireless, and mid-range GPU for that price is not bad.

The similar Canadian model for an equivalent CAD price has a lower res screen, less RAM, and a smaller SSD. I haven't found anything in Canada for near that price range with a 4k screen.

You can wait for this to come back in stock. Little more expensive, but double the storage, way better CPU and video card, and better build quality.

Save most of the taxes with the educational discount and you get a free tablet.

underscore 08-04-2016 11:48 AM

That's starting to push a bit beyond the budget I'm aiming for, I'm buying at least 2 (possibly as many as 4) and they'll be used for work so I also need to factor in the upgrade to W10 Pro as well.

twitchyzero 08-04-2016 10:04 PM

for work that's more than great but think about the return/warranty
got something through dell us...wouldn't do it again.
costco should be much better but you are buying a few

Verdasco 08-05-2016 07:09 AM

long shot here, anyone have a microsoft intel 1.1 mouse? black version

will pay $10.00 and pick up if its new or in new condition, $5.00 is used

From what I can tell the warranty is invalid if we take it to a job site in the winter (too cold) so I'm not really worried about that.

Akinari 08-06-2016 12:11 AM

Ended up picking up an i3-6100, for the stuff I do on my PC, I couldn't justify the extra $150 for an i5-6xxx. Plus, planning on OCing this thing with a Gigabyte Z170X-Gaming 5, and then snag a Sapphire Nitro+ RX 480 whenever it's released :alonehappy:
