Kind of an upgrading question. Looking at affordable semi portable gaming laptops. Came across this asus i5 960m for 879 down from 1100. Asus GL551VW-DS51 w/ Core i5-6300HQ, 8GB, 1TB, GTX 960M, Windows 10, 64 bit at Memory Express

Just for use while I'm out of town for regular internet use and some gaming.

Opinions please if anyone has one.

Hondaracer 11-27-2016 09:10 PM

Any recommendations for a good gaming monitor for under $400?

The PC my dad ended up building came with the 8GB 1070 and I'd assume can do 4K so is it worth getting a 4K monitor yet?

heisenberg 12-07-2016 02:22 AM

anyone have a surge protector and have it like die on them ? LOL i've had mine for like 2 years and it finally died on me today. are there any signs before hand? so i can buy a new one before it happens?

m3thods 12-07-2016 07:14 AM

Just a regular protector and not an APC? I don't think I've ever had one die on me at home. I suppose without anything monitoring voltage/current coming in there's no real way to tell. APCs will alarm if they need replacing.

godwin 12-07-2016 07:56 AM

Regular protector also need to be replaced regularly.. the fuse fails without you knowing. If you really want protection install a proper one on your fuse panel.

Thinking of selling my Gaming PC anyone interested in it? not sure how much its worth

GTX 970
MSI 970 gaming ATx mobo
AMD fx 8350 8 core
16gb Ram ddr3

Verdasco 12-07-2016 09:57 AM

i am not good with AMD

but... GTX 970 $250, cpu probably 150 or less, mobo (i would not buy it for more than $100 used) probably $75, ram is like $50

maybe $500? it is AMD afterall and the benchmarks prove it gets crushed by everything..

edit:

UserBenchmark: AMD FX-8350 vs Intel Core i5-4590

crushed by old generation i5..... makes me think the system is worth $400-450 now.... not very good gaming CPU wow...

Razor Ramon HG 12-07-2016 11:03 AM

Around $550.

Where's a good place to get a mobo for a socket that's no longer being produced? I'm having a heck of a time finding a cheap 1155 (new or used).

lilaznviper 12-07-2016 02:36 PM

^i bought one off ebay recently. I have some dell motherboards for that socket, but i found out they only run certain processors. Let me know what processor you have and i can see if i got any leftover dell motherboards you can use.

two i7-2600 and one i5-2500. I'm trying to replace the Dell motherboards they're currently sitting in since the mobos use a bunch of proprietary junk I don't want to deal with (and it pops up with an error on boot that I can't seem to disable if I disconnect anything).

underscore 12-09-2016 06:59 AM

Noob question here. Pondering on the idea of changing out my fans. It's a really old case (Thermaltake tsunami dream va3000bwa) and according to a website, there's 2x 120mm fan and 1x 90mm fan.

What exactly am I supposed to look for in determining which is a good fan and which isn't?

Razor Ramon HG 12-13-2016 02:06 PM

I usually just buy a fan that matches the size and look that I want.

I like be quiet, Corsair, and Fractal Design fans.

Edit* Ended up buying the BenQ ZOWIE [New] 27-Inch Console eSports Gaming Monitor for $390 with a amazon GC i had, seemed like a good option

Cooler Master 200mm Blue LED Fan at Memory Express
Bitfenix Spectre Pro LED 200 mm Fan, Blue

for example, would that be a good one? my understanding is, I would want high cfm?

Well, your case supports 120mm and 90mm and this one is 200mm so it won't fit.
