- budget $1000-$1200
- looking to game on PC again but nothing hardcore so no need for top of line vid cards etc but at the same time want something that will last me 3-5 years
- SSD for sure i mean why not if i'm buying now
- likely doing dual monitors if that matters

I don't know, I've been out of the computer world for so long I know nothing anymore is there anything else I should mention that would help?

Any good price matching sites to use with NCIX?

Thanks in advance for getting the ball rolling.

Use PCPartPicker to get good prices.

Wait 1 month for AMD's Ryzen/Vega. It's going to shake up the market.

NVIDIA Unveils GeForce GTX 1080 Ti: Available Week of March 5th for $699

glad 4K60 on a single consumer card is finally here and they got rid of the stupid Founder's Edition premium.

I wouldn't mind one in MSI Lightning variant please

hope Vega can come really close in performance for $499 US

Noted, I'm not in a rush so I can wait. Realistically I want a new PC when I move which can be anywhere from 6-8 months but I wouldn't mind starting to look into it and buying one before then. I suppose I'll wait until a month and go from there.

I moved the new SSD back to my desktop to try and reinstall windows via USB installation media

install is interrupted at 'installing features'...no error message but it reboots and loads back to the USB main install menu again.

Note my desktop doesn't officially support NVMe though..it's an older Intel Z77 chipset. Others have done it with success, while there are also modded BIOS on the internet to support NVMe.

Back to the original drive for now...maybe I'll try again after my trip.

Ahh, this makes more sense now. I had a X79 board, and it didn't official support NVMe PCIe boot. I tried to get it working. After 2 days, I gave up.

I agree with the Ryzen CPU wait. On paper, the AMD can drive the cost of an high-end computer down. I would wait until more practical reviews come out.

just built a ryzen 1700x + 32g hyperx 2400 ram + gtx1060 for video editing. Pretty dang fast coming from an A10-6800k lol.

only problem is mem needs to be down graded to 2133 to run stable due to dual layer 16g dimms not being handled very well on the current mobos :(

only nuisance is the 'x' versions of the ryzen 7 chips have a 20 degree Celsius offset added by AMD to the real temp which is bullshit. My computer displays it idles at 58c and goes up to 85c under prime95, making the mobo beep like mad. In reality its only 38c idle and 65c in prime. Pretty stupid way AMD implemented the temp offsets and their poor explanation for it, something fishy definitely going on here with the 'x' chips and their reason for the temp offset on them. 1700 non X does not have this offset.

On a side note, when I swapped cpu coolers after installing the Ryzen after the initial install, the thermal grease stuck to the cpu and pulled it right out of it's socket... first time it's happened to me and scared the crap out of me. Changed over to arctic mx4 with the new build from a Coolermaster thermal paste, so I guess the mx4 is a much stickier compound. Luckily no bent pins, but not sure if it's the motherboard not clamping tight enough or just a one off. Now learned to twist and pull next time I need to take off the cooler.

DragonChi 03-16-2017 08:50 PM

I think the only real way to find out is to test with a thermogun, FLIR, or thermocouple. Otherwise it's just hearsay. 20C is A LOT!

I'm in a bit of a bind here, where can I find 1680x1050 monitors that don't cost an arm and a leg and can ship within a week? NCIX says the soonest they could ship any is 2 weeks.

We need two, so I ordered a couple of these and paid extra for the fast shipping, we'll see how fast it really is. Thanks!

Does it have to be MS Office? If not, I'd suggest a ChromeBox

HP Chromebox, 1.40 GHz Intel 2955U Dual-Core, 4 GB DDR3 SDRAM, 16 GB, English, (J5N50UT#ABA) | Staples®

My wife thought she needed a PC/Mac for web/word processing. Made her try out a Chromebook for 2 weeks. Ended up saving tons of money as it did everything she wanted her computer to do (web, word processing).

Try a business-style small desktop. These are usually quite reliable and good value.

$499, decent specs. There are i5 models available for $599. http://www.ncix.com/promo/SpringBrea...inorcatid=1113

$306.69 shipped for this is pretty good - Core i3-4160, 4GB RAM, 1TB HDD, Intel Integrated Video, DVDRW, Windows 7 Pro / Windows 8.1 Pro (D510MT-I34160082F) (Refurbished) - NMicroVIP

She doesn't want a laptop, and uses MS office. She probably doesn't have the patience to learn a new system.

I'll take a look at the linked desktops, any of those should be better than similarly priced options at the big box stores
