haven't seen external GPU enclosures in-person but I would assume there's minimal space inside for fans to dump the heat...blower exhaust in that case would make more sense.

what kind of enclosure will you be using? I'd lean towards a blower-style cooler like the reference design

I think I'm just going with the cheapest 1080Ti... I don't think I'd be able to take advantage of any extra power offered in premium 1080ti...

dont know how much graphical grunt you need but this for $700 looks like a great turn-key

Aorus GTX 1070 Gaming Box is a pre-packaged powerhouse - The Tech Report

don't expect availability for at least another month though

$700?what the fuck, ill buy that for my girlfriend to play over and LAN LOL

What's the point of that? To boost the graphics capabilities of a high end laptop?

Great for workstation laptops to turn them into gaming capable machines.

Think of laptops such as Macbook Pros and Dell XPSes. Higher end configurations have i7-7700HQ chips that rival desktop chips. The only thing lacking is a strong video card.

Yes, pretty much to game on a laptop:

What would cause a video card to suddenly start running very hot? 70-80*C doing absolutely nothing, 90*C when in a game. It was working fine up until last night, I chucked a spare card in the same computer and its temps are much lower. The fan seems to be working properly as it spins and ramps up when it gets hot, and very hot air is coming out of the back. I tried cleaning the card and the rest of the case and replacing the thermal compound but there's no change. It's an EVGA GTX 580, but I've got a 560Ti doing something similar.

If fans are working, perhaps dust? If not, you may need a thermal repaste.

Check for GPU usage as well. Malware may be running like a BTC/ETH miner.

underscore 07-01-2017 03:20 PM

I cleaned all the dust out of them and replaced the thermal paste, the air coming out is very hot so I'm assuming the paste is working. I'm not sure how to check GPU usage, both of the cards are NVidia and the one I swapped in is an AMD, not sure if there's chipset specific malware or something.

Get GPU-Z and double check usage in the sensors tab.

For the 560 Ti - 0% load, fan speed 33%, temp 74*C. I fired up a game, 100% load, fan speed 67%, temp 87*C.

GTX 580 - 0% load, fan speed 40%, temp 44*C.
I plugged in the second screen, the clocking shot up and it went to 0% load, fan speed 51%, temp 65*C.
Fire up a game, 60% load, fan speed 60%, temp 83*C.
I disconnect the second screen with the game running, no change.

Meanwhile my 7870 - 0% load, fan speed 40%, temp 30*C. Running the same game is 50% load, fan speed 40%, 40*C

What gives? Going by the fan speed is running them that hot not as bad as I thought? 60% load at 83*C seems terrible though.

Just installed Win 10 on a fresh setup. Every time I reboot the PC it makes me go into BIOS settings and hit save/enter before it loads Windows.

Any idea what it is?

lilaznviper 07-06-2017 02:19 PM

doing a build for a buddy and sub priced 200 dollar video cards are all back order :fuuuuu:

Your not going to find any AMD cards do to crypto mining. I would just grab a Nvidia 1050TI and call it a day. Number of places have it in stock for around $200.

lilaznviper 07-06-2017 04:32 PM

ended up getting the 1050ti 4gb at memory express as ncix had limited stock as well.

start by unplugging every other disk in the system except for the bootable one...make sure boot sequence is only set to that one.

i had this happen before but try changing the boot sequence to windows boot manager and/or the hard drive you have win10 installed. another thing is try changing the boot mode to uefi or legacy. sometimes that makes the difference as well.

Sigh I ordered a new PC build from NCIX almost a month ago and it's held up because the Geforce 1070 hasn't arrived yet and there's a global shortage :rukidding:

twitchyzero 07-07-2017 10:57 AM

fyi it's not coming anytime soon

http://www.overclock.net/content/typ.../1000/flags/LL

the demand for "mid-range" GPU (i know i know it's $600) has all been snatched up by miners
you might need to settle for a 1050ti or move up to the 1080

Yea, I don't expect it to be anytime soon either. The good news is I don't even need the computer right now. I'm moving in 3 months and this was a new PC build for my new home and I wanted to future proof my PC a bit by being able to game comfortably for some years to come. So at least I have that on my side where I'm in no rush and it's all paid for already. The 1050 although totally capable of gaming just seems a little too low to last me for years and the 1080 is way overkill for me.

Razor Ramon HG 07-07-2017 03:38 PM

I have a Strix 1060 6GB for $450 and a SSC 1060 6GB that is refurbished for $350. Not sure which to keep right now, but probably the SSC, so if you want the Strix let me know since I am within the Amazon return window.

Mr.Money 07-07-2017 09:23 PM

guess i lucked out on amazon.ca with the 1070 for 500 dollars before tax,my
"budget" build with ryzen 1600x,took your guys advice on a budget fan..."be quite" 120mm...paid 120 for the gaming keyboard, its the v1 version but still very good IMO..love the colors and overwatch layout when you boot it up...there's software that changes color to your fighter in it.
