Has anyone used the built-in VPN in ASUS routers? Is it fairly secure/stable? I've got an RT-N65U, which from my understanding is discontinued, but I need another VPN set up so I'm hoping to find a newer model with the same interface for convenience, unless a dedicated device is going to be significantly better.

Looking to replace the wifey's aging laptop. She doesn't need anything fancy, but she does have a habit of leaving a thousand web browser tabs open, so I figure a little more RAM would probably be useful for her. I'm also planning put an SSD in there so that she is at least keeping up with 2010-era technology.

Does this look like a good option to purchase? I am not super familiar with laptop prices vs specs, but from the quick browsing that I've been doing over the past week or so, it seems like the price is decent:

https://www.bestbuy.ca/en-ca/product...y-stores-modal

I am somewhat concerned that 8GB won't be enough RAM. Also, should I wait until Black Friday offers hit us? There is no super big rush to purchase, but I don't think I'd be able to score the best limited quantity BF deals that come up since I'll probably be too slow by the time I find out about them.

8gb would be okay for web browsing.

ssd would help with battery life if it isnt plugged in...its not spinning up the disk since its flash memory based.

you should check the store together to see what laptops you like on display if 720p isnt up to par to your old laptop.

check if the ram is upgradable. 16GB is too pricey right now if you're looking to maximize the savings

affordable laptops can be had year-round...doesn't hurt to wait but don't have to bank on BF either

Sigh...so I got my asus RMA motherboard back...(looks like refurbished unit)
hooked up everything, and it still won't boot..

But instead of nothing coming on like the replaced mobo, this time the PC would start up and the fan spin for like a second then stop....(lights comes on for a second then basically everything shut down)

I tested another PSU, same thing.
Tried, resetting the cpu, ram, GPU. Tried booting without the GPU, HD. Still does the same thing.

Did I just get a dead replacement mobo or maybe possibility something else in the system is causing the problem?

Unfortunately I don't have an extra CPU or Ram I could test it with. (i7-6700K, 1 stick 16GB DDR4)

I just got a 4k monitor at work, fuck me is this thing hard to use. Everything is stupidly tiny. What is the point of this thing supposed to be if I can't read anything without being insanely close to the screen?

What's the physical screen size and native resolution of your new 4k monitor?

If you are on Win7 / 8 / 10, you can use the built-in "Magnifier" app to help you with some hard to read stuff. It totally goes against getting a large, high res screen in the first place, but when you gotta make it work, you gotta make it work.

It's a 27" running at 3840x2160. I'm using W7, the magnifier might work but I'm nearly always reading stuff so that might be a bit annoying. I had it at 1920x1080 until I updated my drivers but that just looked with a regular 2k monitor using VGA (aka blurry). My coworker that suggested them after trying some didn't bother to mention that he runs everything at 150% (W10), which is the same end result as just running a 2560x1440 screen (which is what I wanted to get in the first place).

I'll try it for a few more days, but I can't see this thing doing anything besides giving me headaches and pissing me off. If I don't see any benefit to it soon it's going back in the box. /rant

looking for some opinions on the gaming laptop front

Newegg has two decent MSI options.

The GS63VR with GTX 1060 and 128gb ssd and 6th Gen i7 3.96lbs. $1700

The other is the GX63VR with GTX 1070 and 256gb ssd and 7th gen i7 4.85lbs. $2000

obviously the GX has better specs for only $300 more, but the GS is smaller. 1/2" in depth and almost 1/2" thick. The laptop will be used for gaming and internet browsing while i am at work out of town. So any opinions would be appreciated. the GS seems to have decent reviews, 3.5-4 stars consistently whereas the GX seems to be a newegg exclusive and either is new or no one buys it.

A bit late but I've used it many times on my 1900P.

It works great. I don't notice a huge slowdown, and from what I can see it's pretty reliable. That said, I only set it on when I'm streaming on my Shield. Otherwise, I use the client on individual computers.

Case: My favorite NXZT 340/340 elite.
PSU: EVGA makes some good power supplies. I have 2. Go modular or semi modular.
CPU: go Ryzen like a 1600x and use the money saved for a better GPU.
Hard drive: Go with a NVME m.2 SSD like the Samsung 960 EVO 250 GB and by a mechanical 1TB HD for storage. Another option is to get a 512 GB SSD for storage.

The case linked above is the Phanteks Shift. I personally don't like the style, but others might.

Out of all mITX cases currently on the market, I recommend the Fractal Design Nano S for a standard tower case or a Fractal Design Node 304/Core 500 for a HTPC style case.

Enthusiasts looking for a high-end SFF case will want the Dan A4 or the NCASE M1.

Upcoming mITX cases that interest me the most are the Cryorig Taku and Cryorig Ola.

I really liked the Fractal Design Mini C TG when I had it. Tempered glass is miles better than the acrylic shit we've been seeing for the past couple of years.

Currently rocking a Jonsbo UMX3. One of the smaller mATX cases and it's all aluminum. Only negative is the limited cooling, but my 7700K/GTX 1060 run around 65-70 at load.
