MSI makes great laptops. My last laptop was MSI.

I have a little issue with my computer, its 3 years old now since i built it, and lately (randomly) when i turn off my computer and later try to turn it back on it doesn't work. I mean absolutely no power at all. This does not happen all the time but it has become more frequent. Now here's the kicker, couple weeks ago it wouldn't turn on for 2 days, so the next day i took it to memory express (where it was built free because most parts were individually purchased from them) and when i tried to duplicate the issue, of course it was working! None the less. They kept it for the weekend and did a bunch of stress tests and every now and then powering it off and back on and i told them to do hard shut downs too because the issue happened a couple of times where my computer will turn black and i had to do a hard shut down.

Now fast forward to yesterday, it happened again and wouldn't turn back on, so i unplugged it overnight and plugged it back in this morning and tried to turn on and nothing. then i unplugged it again and tried turning it back on 30 minutes ago and now it works!

I'm thinking and hoping it's just the power supply (has 5 year warranty) or just the cmos battery (but those are usually good for a really long time). I'm hoping it's not the motherboard or cpu. Is there a way to pinpoint the issue? I mean, how does anyone pinpoint it when there is absolutely no power at all? not even a fan flicker or anything!

twitchyzero 02-28-2018 08:43 PM

memexpress guys would've probably checked the PSU first thing
you' ve tried it at a different power outlet? without a powerbar?

underscore 02-28-2018 08:53 PM

^ in addition to those have you tried a different power cable? normally they're pretty reliable but I did have one fail once.

lilaznviper 02-28-2018 11:32 PM

most of the issues seem like 90% psu issue.

i always get a boner when i read:

"1.5 Million Hours (Mean Time Between Failure)"

bigzz786786 03-01-2018 03:26 PM

I've tried 2 different power cables, and 2 outlets, I've also checked to confirm power is coming from the outlet by plugging in other devices. It actually just happened again. I was playing a game yesterday for about 2 hours and turned off the computer. Tried turning it back on this afternoon and nothing again. The next thing i want to try is swapping the power supply. I'm visiting my brother next weekend and I'll take my tower with me and try and recreate the issue, then swap out power supplies and see if that confirms that it is the psu. If that doesn't fix it then ill try the cmos battery since thats only 10 dollars. If non of those fix it then fuck.

I don't think its an overheating issue. My temps seem normal.
I gues specs might help:

i7 6700k
16gb hyperx fury ddr3 ram
Corsair h100i cpu cooling
Sli msi gtx 970
Msi z97 sli krait motherboard
120gb hyper x fury ssd
1tb WD caviar black hard drive
Evga 850w power supply 80plus gold modular
Nzxt phantom 680 windowed edition tower

Thoughts on the ASUS ROG gaming laptop series?

specifically:

Asus Strix ROG GL753 Gaming Laptop - i7 7700HQ | 16gb | GTX 1050ti
128gig SSD/M.2 - 1TB 7200RPM - 17" IPS Screen

twitchyzero 03-02-2018 02:31 PM

too big personally
128gb also means you probably be inclined to upgrade

Mr.Money 03-02-2018 04:12 PM

i'd find a 1060 gtx minimum laptop just to feature proof it some....crazy to see these high end cpu and lower rank GPU Laptops..

Try the Dell XPS 15, i've got a 9550 model and it's by far the best laptop i've ever owned. It's got a GTX 960M which isn't as impressive as some of todays cards but it still gets the job done.

are you running your PC and peripherals on a surge protector?

last year my PC wouldnt turn off after one night, and i found out my surge protector went.

you could've gotten a surge weak enough not to effect the PC, but maybe just the PSU?

bobbinka 03-03-2018 04:09 PM

if it was a CMOS battery issue, i think you would've heard beeps in the time leading up to its failure.

Acura604 03-03-2018 10:28 PM

decided to go with the ASUS GL753VE

the DELL TN panel is junk...although its a pretty solid built laptop.

the ASUS is huge but i'm used to having a QOSMIO 18.4" style laptop around at home.

That gross French keyboard, lol.

I have an ASUS UX550VE Zenbook Pro. The GTX 1050TI is a pretty strong mobile card if your goal is to supplement a desktop.

Plays PUBG and GTA V at 1080p reasonably well.

Manic! 03-04-2018 03:31 PM

I am slowly putting together a new computer. Right now I have an Asus strix 1080 TI, NZXT 280 mm Aio cooler, Samsung 500 GB m.2. drive 8 TB 35 inch drive, and 32 gigs of ram. Plan on getting a 2.5 inch ssd.

I need a small case that has a handle or I can add a handle to because I want to be able to move this computer around when i use it for VR. Any suggestions? This is the only one I can find right now that meets my need but it's going to cost me close to $500.

Well I had a pretty budget build

replaced old P35 mobo + 2gb DDR2 + q6600 + GTX 460 with:

b350m mortar + ryzen 1300x + 8gb ddr4 2666 + gtx 1050ti.

reused everything else. this will last me another 10 years hopefully. 670 after tax. not bad considering the old setup 10 years ago was over 800. that core2quad was $$$. Now it's worth $40 at best for the entire old lot.

My Pentium D died on me 2 years ago, finally decided to build a new PC.

Intel i5-8400
Asus Prime Z370
16gb ram

Just going to use Intel graphics since I don't game. Reusing my Cougar Evolution case that I was using for a 12 drive NAS. My drives went into a Dell R510 rack mount server so that freed up a case.

I haven't decided on a monitor but I'm looking at a 40" 4k TV. It's going to be a dual boot OSX High Sierra/Win10

ZN6 03-07-2018 01:24 PM

I almost did go with a coffeelake.

I read so many good reviews about the 6 core, but decided not to.

Personally i almost went for the z370m gaming pro ac since it had wifi and bluetooth. it was a $220 board, and then with a 8400 and 16gb of ram, it would have been well over 800 bucks.

I still game a bit so the 1050ti fit the bill as i don't need 4K nor do i really need the ungodly high framerate. I really would have threw in an extra 80 bucks for a 1060 from gigabyte but memoryexpress is completely out at every single location. 309 is an insane deal, but then again, i don't really need that either. There's always "just a bit more for more performance". Oh well, at heart i'm a pc gamer, but I can't even find time to play all my console exclusives. :okay:

The difference a 10 year gap makes is astounding obviously, but i don't think I'd feel much difference between the intel option vs the AMD that I have now. I can't think of a situation right now where I would fully utilize the i5.

Congrates on the coffee lake. I hear really good things about it.

FML. 2 days later they have one (1) in stock in vancouver. FYI video card sales these days are final sale. I didn't think they'd stock a 1060 right now but this one is the cheapest 1060 i can find at $309.
