Price protection only works for the same model card. unfortunately, i didn't spring for a 1060 because i didn't know they were going to stock the gigabyte 1060 at 309 the next day i bought my 1050ti

The demand for GPU's is slowing down and more are now in stock with lower prices. People are waiting for the new Nvida cards that are going to be announced soon. Buddy was offered 8 RX 560's for $1550 shipped to his door including tax.

last year my PC wouldnt turn off after one night, and i found out my surge protector went.

you could've gotten a surge weak enough not to effect the PC, but maybe just the PSU?

I am running everything through a surge protector as my desk is in the middle of the office so i need the extension so i can plug everything in. The idea of the surge protector going bad could be a good explanation. we did have a few power outages here during the winter (campbell river). Will try and recreate the problem this weekend when i take my computer to my brother's place. then i'll swap out the psu and go from there. if that is the case then i guess i gotta buy a beefier surge protector (this one is new but cheap, no fuse for surge protection. Thanks!

word is 1080 production has already stopped so despite rumours saying there wont be new cards, I think they will still go ahead and announce the 1180 or 2080 whatever it's called...we'll know in 2 weeks

there's no way supply in the first few months will be anywhere near demand, though

everyone's on the sidelines watching and waiting for first blood haha

What you don't want to start a mining farm? EleGiggle

Just buy an over priced card and mine with it when you are not using it to make some money back.

I'd mine with it during downtime but they're still too expensive for that! Power here is about $0.14 USD per KW/h so it's not as profitable for me.

If I could get an RX580 for like $300-400 I'd go for it probably, but they are all out of that range

I do see a 4GB version for $350 but I am not buying a 4GB card

Great deal for a full sized mechanical keyboard.

Just going to use Intel graphics since I don't game. Reusing my Cougar Evolution case that I was using for a 12 drive NAS. My drives went into a Dell R510 rack mount server so that freed up a case.

I haven't decided on a monitor but I'm looking at a 40" 4k TV. It's going to be a dual boot OSX High Sierra/Win10

So I got everything last week and slapped it together. Funny, I work as a Sysadmin so I put together storage and compute platforms all the time but I haven't built a PC in over 10 years. Powering it on the first time was a bit unnerving...

With everything working, I went to Visions to grab a TV for a monitor... was all ready to buy a 40" but it seemed a little small in the store. Was all ready to spend $500 on a 40" 4k but I left with a 50" 4k for $488.

Too big? lol... for size comparison, my tower is a full size ATX.

Meh, I use it maybe 1-2 hours a week... that's why it took me so long to replace it. I work with computers all day long, don't really want to touch them when I get home but sometimes I need to.

I am building a new computer and need some good hard drive backup software.

The computer will have 2 SSD's and an internal 8 TB drive and an external 8 TB drive. I need the software to do scheduled backups of any new files on the SSD's to the 8 TB drive. When I plug in the external drive I want it to back up the internal 8 TB drive. Any suggestions?

underscore 03-14-2018 02:41 PM

If you're comfortable using batch files it's pretty easy to set up using Task Scheduler to do the scheduled SSD -> internal, there's a simply copy command that will only copy new/changed files. You may need to manually run a .bat to go from internal -> external unless you can get it to work as the "autorun" for that drive? I've never tried that part.

SkinnyPupp 03-14-2018 04:54 PM

Highly recommend Macrium Reflect. Easy to use but very powerful. I tried several about 10 years ago and this one was the most reliable in terms of getting backups to work properly on different drives without having to mess around with things.

Not as good as Orbi or those with wired/wireless backbone. Same as the others that don't have the backbone, but the app is easy. Missing ports if you need those.

FerrariEnzo 03-16-2018 12:19 PM

Yea, read reviews about it not having a high throughput but for watching netflix, surfing net.. I think it should be sufficient?

!LittleDragon 03-16-2018 04:23 PM

Can't speak about Google but I've been using Ubiquiti Unifi for several years now. They have a home version available but I opted for the enterprise grade stuff. Each access point is about $100 so you can start small and add on. I bought a 3 pack and it's a bit excessive for a 2000 sqft house. Could've probably done with 2.

https://www.plumewifi.com/ is another option if you don't want to mount Cisco size frisbees everywhere.

Another thing with Google is if they lose interest in the product, they'll ditch it... Google Glass, Nexus Q, etc...

FerrariEnzo 03-16-2018 07:19 PM

My Google Wifi came in.. bought the 3 pack..

The wifi speed is pretty good.. did 3 speed tests and getting 150-155Mbps...

Was looking at the TP Link Deco... but decided to go with google..

I Macrium at work all the time for workstation images before they go to my wds server.

For backups of files themselves I use Syncback that dump from my desktop to my nas and then from my nas to both USB storage and onedrive cloud.
