noob question here

is it worth it to buy a used graphics card that has been used for bitcoin mining?
since it was prob run 24/7 for several months, i'm guessing there would be a lot of wear on its components?

Thanks :)

The card would have been under volted to save power and the fans would be run on high to keep the card cool. If you can get it for a good price I would go for it.

Was thinking about this as well, I figure it may be better to just spend as little as possible now and use the extra money when it comes time to build a new system.

Found some 570s for ~120 and a few 580s 8GB for $200 which seems like decently priced upgrades for me.

SkinnyPupp 02-21-2019 03:03 PM

580's are even cheaper now, I know because I'm trying to sell mine LUL

ForbiddenX 02-23-2019 09:15 AM

Picked up the RX580 yesterday from someone who didn't mine with it. Such a great upgrade from my GTX770. Should last me hopefully 2 years then I can do a full rebuild.

Sold the 770 for $55 so net upgrade for me was $145!

SkinnyPupp 02-23-2019 09:57 AM

How much did you buy the 580 for?

ForbiddenX 02-23-2019 10:13 AM

Bought it for $200. Its the Sapphire Nitro+ 8GB

Mr.Money 02-23-2019 12:58 PM

I have the same monitor and speakers :)

TOS'd 02-24-2019 06:29 AM

Do most ultrawide monitors have native features for screen tiling? Ie. Can you quickly fullscreen a 16:9 ratio in the middle and have 2 side windows?

I know there are 3rd party programs that you can set up for this, but was wondering if there was native features included from the manufacturer.

twitchyzero 02-24-2019 08:46 AM

i believe many splits into two halfs natively...i dont know about a portrait-landscape-portrait split though...doubt it

TOS'd 02-24-2019 01:37 PM

Damn, was hoping for something that did the portrait-landscape-portrait split natively. As I primarily want a main screen and then some side windows. Was hoping to get away from a triple monitor setup.

I don't think that's possible without third party software as Windows only sees the monitor as one device and natively supports only two columns (even on UWs).

When I had an UW, I wanted to have three equal columns for working on documents and I needed software from LG to do it.

TOS'd 02-24-2019 02:45 PM

Yea I'm fine with using software from the monitor if it's good. I've used DisplayFusion and another one, but they all have something they could improve on.

Yeah, multiple monitors are still the best way for most use cases, and I believe there's some psychology behind having separate monitors for different purposes that improves workflow. Something to do with your brain processing things separately.

I found that all third party applications I tried had something lacking and none of them were as fluid and intuitive as Windows Snap.

Spectacle (which is free) works great if you're in a macOS environment. You can just assign a Windows Snap-like hotkey and get three columns (and more).

Sick setup! What monitor is that?

Been thinking about getting an ultrawide but I'd be using it for work too so I need an IPS + high refresh rate. Looks like the Alienware's are exactly that but $$$ :(

Damn $993 + taxes seem like a good deal for that Alienware.

I haven't really looked too much into gsync/freesync but I currently have a RX580, I'm guessing I won't be able to take advantage of gsync? I would need a freesync monitor?

Yes, AMD cards will use Freesync. Freesync is cheaper anyways - G-Sync actually has dedicated hardware in the monitor, which means it is $100-200 extra over Freesync.
