I find both are about the same when i returned parts last time i went. Memory express location was BBY and when richmond main store was still open.

Canada computers, the richmond store.

Finally feeling the age of my Core i7 3770... (I had a 4770 but I lost it). I think I'll upgrade to a Ryzen 3700X system

I wish I could see some direct comparisons using older CPUs...

Seeing as the 3700X is basically a 9900K, and Intel improved their chips IPC by around 10% each generation..

You'd probably around 50-60% better performance for single-threaded operations and a fuck ton for multi-threaded operations.

Whether or not that noticeable will depend on what you use your computer for.

Vansterdam 07-15-2019 01:05 PM

I got a I7 4790K thinking if its worth it or if I should upgrade the cpu/ram/mobo lol

pretty much only thing I really want/need to upgrade

I think it should be very noticeable in games, varying of course, depending on how heavily threaded it is. Even though my GPU is only a 2060, I'm sure it's being held back by a slow CPU at 1080p.

What I'm wondering is if I could get away with a slightly lower end but still modern CPU, and maybe upgrade that later :considered:

roastpuff 07-15-2019 08:30 PM

Not with Intel, they'll swap sockets on you and screw you over. AMD at least outlines how long they'll support that particular socket.

Razor Ramon HG 07-15-2019 10:27 PM

AMD will support AM4 until 2020, so if you buy something lower now, you should be able to upgrade next year.

If you're doing that, the 3600X is 6/12 and might be good for you.

Just ordered this setup from Newegg... About $1200 total. Going to hold off on the 2070 Super until Black Friday or Boxing Day. Since it's going to be my media center PC, I can do without the GPU for a while.

When it's done, it'll be the most expensive PC I built since my original 386 with 4mb RAM... lol That cost $2000 in 1991 money.

Intel Core i7-9700K
MSI MPG Z390I GAMING EDGE AC
CORSAIR Vengeance LPX 16GB
Corsair Force MP510 M.2 2280 240GB
CORSAIR SF750

Since it's going to be a HTPC, I'm cramming it all into one of these...

http://vintageelectronics.betamaxcol...hr-7100u_1.jpg

I tried to do this years ago but I lazed out and just gutted it and shoved a laptop inside.

Anyone know of a VFD display that works in Windows 10? I have a Soundgraph Imon in my old HTPC but I don't know if it's going to work in Win10 since the company is now defunct.

ForbiddenX 07-18-2019 05:28 PM

3700x finally in stock on Amazon and Newegg if you're looking for one. Still kind of waiting on the 3900x but might order the 3700x for now, getting pretty impatient waiting lol. Are all Ryzen launches like this?

Amazon: https://www.amazon.ca/AMD-Ryzen-3700.../dp/B07SXMZLPK
Newegg: https://www.newegg.ca/amd-ryzen-7-37...82E16819113567

!LittleDragon 07-25-2019 04:17 PM

Parts arrived... slapped them together on my table and it wouldn't boot. The board is telling me it's a DRAM problem. Nothing wrong with the RAM, works fine in my other machine.

That'll teach me to buy an open box motherboard on Newegg.

Been out of it for a long time.. still on an intel i5 2500k.. looking to upgrade to a micro gaming/photo editing rig. Any recommendations?

I'm using a R9 390 if that is still relevant..

If you are going for a really small build pick the case first and build around that. I would go with a Ryzen CPU and 32 gigs of ram because ram is dirt cheap these days.

Pick the case first, then the motherboard/parts. Also, if you want to go Ryzen 3rd gen I have a R7 3800X for sale! Decided I'm not going to build a system this year, but managed to pick one up at launch. Will give RS discount. :D

Ryzen prefers fast (3600Mhz ish) RAM though so do pick your RAM carefully.

wrong post.

Anyone in HK have an AM4 CPU I could use to flash this motherboard?

!LittleDragon 08-06-2019 10:59 AM

My project over the weekend. No GPU yet, hard to find a 2070 Super let alone one that's short enough to fit in this thing. I'm pretty much limited to the MSI Ventis OC at the moment.

Thermals aren't great. Idles at 35-40c and under load, CPU is at 90c with the case floating around 70 degrees. That's with ambient temps around 26 degrees right now. It was a lot worse when I testing with Prime95 but that's not realistic. I did the stress test by transcoding 5 4k movies at once to hit 100% CPU. That's more realistic. Played some games through Dolphin emulator and never went above 45c. Not sure how adding a GPU is going to affect the temps... it's more heat but it's also going to suck in more air. I could change out the fan on the cooler, the Big Shuriken 3 comes with a low profile fan that's probably not the best.

One weird thing I noticed is with Core Temp, it's showing core temps at 100c but the motherboard shows 90c. I don't know which one is more accurate.

I wish I had some proper tools... I did all the cutting and drilling with a dremel so my cuts aren't as straight as they should be. I hacked up my old Thermaltake Mozart HTPC case for the motherboard tray and turned the PCI slots sideways.

I modified the VCR's circuit boards so the LEDs work again and REC/STOP buttons are power/reset.

I was on the fence about painting the motherboard tray since you're never really going to see it. After much thought, why not go for the Burqa look... nobody is going to notice it but upon closer inspection... whoah, hot red panties underneath...

Yes, the top load tape eject still works...

Specs:
I7-9700k
16gb RAM
256gb SSD Boot Drive
2TB SSD Storage Drive for the Wii U and Switch games

Does popping open the tape tray affect temps at all?

Not really noticeable, I have the fan right behind it that exhausts out. I think opening the tape loader will just cause air to rush in through there and out the exhaust instead of pulling the air from the motherboard area. I was testing on a pretty hot day yesterday, I'm hoping temps will go down when the weather cools down... but I was kind of expecting this. It's not a big tower case with great air flow and temps seem to be in line with other Mini ITX builds.

bobbinka 08-06-2019 03:09 PM

this will ensure kids won't mess with your computer... cause it's just some old VCR :lol

!LittleDragon 08-06-2019 03:24 PM

Somewhere a vintage electronics collector is crying their eyes out. This thing was pretty mint when I found it. It was tucked in a storage closet at my old work place... it looked like it was never used! lol

I was hoping to get that mechanical counter to work but it was belt driven. I'd have to mount a small motor somewhere.

SkinnyPupp 08-06-2019 04:57 PM

Found an article from 1981 about that VCR. Apparently it was one of the first to have what we call "fast forward" Cost £500 at the time (£1,900 today)

SkinnyPupp 08-07-2019 04:27 AM

Up and running on my 3600X system. I wish I'd kept all those Noctua cooler samples BabyRage This default cooler is loud af

Finally finished building my 3900x + 2070 Super Build! Decided to go with a white/black color scheme and forgo the RGB.

Did a quick build video as well:

Razor Ramon HG 08-07-2019 10:06 PM

Fractal Design's Meshify case is really good. Solid construction with good airflow. I had the mATX version and loved it.
