Seeing as the 3700X is basically a 9900K, and Intel improved their chips IPC by around 10% each generation..
You'd probably around 50-60% better performance for single-threaded operations and a fuck ton for multi-threaded operations.
Whether or not that noticeable will depend on what you use your computer for.
I think it should be very noticeable in games, varying of course, depending on how heavily threaded it is. Even though my GPU is only a 2060, I'm sure it's being held back by a slow CPU at 1080p.
What I'm wondering is if I could get away with a slightly lower end but still modern CPU, and maybe upgrade that later
Just ordered this setup from Newegg... About $1200 total. Going to hold off on the 2070 Super until Black Friday or Boxing Day. Since it's going to be my media center PC, I can do without the GPU for a while.
When it's done, it'll be the most expensive PC I built since my original 386 with 4mb RAM... lol That cost $2000 in 1991 money.
Since it's going to be a HTPC, I'm cramming it all into one of these...
I tried to do this years ago but I lazed out and just gutted it and shoved a laptop inside.
Anyone know of a VFD display that works in Windows 10? I have a Soundgraph Imon in my old HTPC but I don't know if it's going to work in Win10 since the company is now defunct.

3700x finally in stock on Amazon and Newegg if you're looking for one. Still kind of waiting on the 3900x but might order the 3700x for now, getting pretty impatient waiting lol. Are all Ryzen launches like this?
Parts arrived... slapped them together on my table and it wouldn't boot. The board is telling me it's a DRAM problem. Nothing wrong with the RAM, works fine in my other machine.
That'll teach me to buy an open box motherboard on Newegg.

Been out of it for a long time.. still on an intel i5 2500k.. looking to upgrade to a micro gaming/photo editing rig. Any recommendations?
I'm using a R9 390 if that is still relevant..
If you are going for a really small build pick the case first and build around that. I would go with a Ryzen CPU and 32 gigs of ram because ram is dirt cheap these days.

Pick the case first, then the motherboard/parts. Also, if you want to go Ryzen 3rd gen I have a R7 3800X for sale! Decided I'm not going to build a system this year, but managed to pick one up at launch. Will give RS discount.

Ryzen prefers fast (3600Mhz ish) RAM though so do pick your RAM carefully.

My project over the weekend. No GPU yet, hard to find a 2070 Super let alone one that's short enough to fit in this thing. I'm pretty much limited to the MSI Ventis OC at the moment.
Thermals aren't great. Idles at 35-40c and under load, CPU is at 90c with the case floating around 70 degrees. That's with ambient temps around 26 degrees right now. It was a lot worse when I testing with Prime95 but that's not realistic. I did the stress test by transcoding 5 4k movies at once to hit 100% CPU. That's more realistic. Played some games through Dolphin emulator and never went above 45c. Not sure how adding a GPU is going to affect the temps... it's more heat but it's also going to suck in more air. I could change out the fan on the cooler, the Big Shuriken 3 comes with a low profile fan that's probably not the best.
One weird thing I noticed is with Core Temp, it's showing core temps at 100c but the motherboard shows 90c. I don't know which one is more accurate.
I wish I had some proper tools... I did all the cutting and drilling with a dremel so my cuts aren't as straight as they should be. I hacked up my old Thermaltake Mozart HTPC case for the motherboard tray and turned the PCI slots sideways.
I modified the VCR's circuit boards so the LEDs work again and REC/STOP buttons are power/reset.
I was on the fence about painting the motherboard tray since you're never really going to see it. After much thought, why not go for the Burqa look... nobody is going to notice it but upon closer inspection... whoah, hot red panties underneath...
Yes, the top load tape eject still works...
Specs:
I7-9700k
16gb RAM
256gb SSD Boot Drive
2TB SSD Storage Drive for the Wii U and Switch games

Does popping open the tape tray affect temps at all?
Not really noticeable, I have the fan right behind it that exhausts out. I think opening the tape loader will just cause air to rush in through there and out the exhaust instead of pulling the air from the motherboard area. I was testing on a pretty hot day yesterday, I'm hoping temps will go down when the weather cools down... but I was kind of expecting this. It's not a big tower case with great air flow and temps seem to be in line with other Mini ITX builds.

Somewhere a vintage electronics collector is crying their eyes out. This thing was pretty mint when I found it. It was tucked in a storage closet at my old work place... it looked like it was never used! lol
I was hoping to get that mechanical counter to work but it was belt driven. I'd have to mount a small motor somewhere.
