Well, since no one has mentioned it...NCIX has stock on the AP-15 Gentle Typhoon fans, haven't been able to find any in a while so if anyone wants them now's the time. They're not too great as case fans, but near perfect for radiators and heatsinks with high fin density because of their high static pressure and airflow/noise ratio.

Anyone have any experience regarding mail-in rebates - specifically MIRs on Gigabyte products? I'm looking to pick up a basic videocard and the MIR makes a big difference. Do manufacturers outsource MIRs to third party companies?

Did a Gigabyte MIR at the end of Dec and chose the -$2 from the rebate for the "express" processing.
Got an amex GC at the end of Jan. Cousin also did a MIR with them but no express proecessing or w/e.
He sent it in the middle/end of Nov and got his GC a week after mine.
As for your second question, I don't remember

All OEM outsource rebates to 3rd party companies.

Any suggestions for making a pc even quieter?
Current rig:
Azza Solano 1000 case
2x140mm intake fans up front, ~500-600rpm, unknown brand
1x140mm Noctua NF-P14FLX, intake, bottom, ~900rpm
1x200mm fan up top, exhaust, rpm unknown but fairly quiet
CM Hyper 212+ with 120mm Scythe Kaze Jyuni, PWM. ~800rpm idle load
Accelero S1 with 120mm Fractal FD-FAN-120, ~1000rpm on GPU
2x WD Caviar 600GB
1x WD Caviar Green 2TB
Seasonic M12D 750W PSU w/ 120mm temp controlled San Ace fan

I think that pretty much covers all the sources of noise, the rig runs almost 24/7 and is in my room so the quieter it can get the better. Have a 200mm side panel fan, CM R4, Gelid Wing 12 PWM, and 2 AP-15 GT sitting on the side as replacements/extras. Considering going liquid with a Swiftech kit. Fan controller and maybe some sound deadening is the next possibility on my list though.

So...thoughts please? Thanks in advance!

My thoughts would be to get rid of that WD Caviar green 2TB.. I have one and it's so fucking loud. My whole rig is pretty much quiet. When i load up something from that drive... it's like hell breaks loose.

It should be pretty quiet already..
sorry if i didnt really help

take out top exhaust and take the bottom one to the back as exhaust? Do you need the aftermarket GPU fan?

tbh I never really noticed the Green drive, it's my long term storage drive so it's inactive 90% of the time.

and twitchy, I'll try taking out the top fan, and see if that changes anything, I need the bottom one in to channel air to the gpu. I'm afraid the aftermarket cooler and fan are needed, the stock one was loud as heck and still had high temps (XFX 4850 XXX), I popped the new setup on it and it became near dead quiet and is now 35/50 idle/load =D.

And Donut, yea I remember seeing that a while back haha. That'll take some consideration though, I only have 1 5" bay left, and the only way to get more is to slide out one of the two 4x3.5" drive bays (which also holds a 140mm fan each) x.x. The drive bays are padded though, so hopefully that'll hold out.

If it's a soft, rapid tick that's just the head working normally, but if it's slower, loud, and more consistent then you might have problems =S

It's not like there's much to differentiate RAM from one another!

^ What he said.

It'd be better if you just tell us how much you want to spend, or how much you are willing to spend, and what you need. "Good" is way too vague, to me a "good" keyboard and mouse is going to total over $150 on their own, while for you a $40 combo set might do.

I am upgrading my HTPC to either 2500K or the newer 3570K 4 core 4 threads.

how much heat will it generate if i o/c it to 4.X ghz? and will a low profile heatsink good enough? would a 2600 (non-K) a better choice?

I'm using a zalman copper heatsink on mine with a modified fan. It appears to handle it just fine and i'm using a 2700k in a htpc case. Liquid cooling might be better.

Check out the new noctua low profile. I am expecting mine to arrive soon

Only get a non K if you don't plan on overclocking at all. For HTPC, you shouldn't need to

I might game with the new setup quite a bit as my fiance and I like to spend an evening playing video games. We just completed LA Noire and G620 onboard video just lag like hell.

Anyway, heat and space will be an issue, as it is a half height case, it fits perfectly in the cabinet.

Either
1) Z77/H77 board that supports Lucid Hyperformance
2) Intel K-CPU
3) HD7750 Low profile (hopefully they have something like this soon)

Or
1) Assrock H61 U3S3 with Lucid Hyperformance
2) Intel 3240 (ivy bridge i-3 coming in summer) / or any non-K cpu
3) HD7750 or 6670

Or
1) Assrock H61 (existing)
2) Intel G620 (existing) ---> replace with an used sandy bridge non-K cpu
3) HD7750 or 6670

Overclocking the CPU won't do much for gaming, don't bother

I'm waiting for my Ivy Bridge sample, so I still haven't seen if it's good enough for gaming yet. I highly doubt it.

My HTPC is an AMD A6 but I haven't gamed on it yet. My TV is just a 720P so I assume it will be good enough to outperform consoles.
