Wow, what line of work are you in to get a high end Alienware PC?

Nvidia's next flagship graphics cards could arrive as soon as next year.

Might well wait for Ryzen 6000 series chips or wait and see if intel has anything Better with a brand new 4080 RTX at this point.

fuck buying a console for 700 dollars if you're already near a brand new PC IMO.

pretty much any engineering/multi media work will give you a high end computer.

I send out 5-6k 3d cad/revit laptops/desktop to users to work from home and because people are hybrid... i also need one at the work place because laptop too heavy to lug around:facepalm:

So over the past 10ish years I have fallen totally out of touch of PC technology. Simply do not have the time to keep up to date on so many things. I've primarily used a Dell laptop as my primary computer over the past 20 years, with each one lasting ~7 years before a catastrophic failure of some sort occurs. For the days I work from home, I currently have my laptop connected to a large monitor with a keyboard etc. It's a pain to connect/reconnect it.

I am hunting for a basic pre-built PC that can do basic office work, internet browsing, Youtube. Budget = few hundred bucks would be great. Any suggestions would be most appreciated.

I saw this, looks ok for my purposes?

Personally, I would at least insist on:

1) either having a 500GB SSD boot drive + spinny HDD for storage, or
2) a 1TB+ SSD as the only drive

Another potential route that you can explore is -- look on FB or elsewhere for people who are selling brand new pre-built PC that has its high end video card ripped out. Those are usually at least a mid spec machine with an entry level price. I've seen a few of those myself, and would have gone that route if I needed a new PC.

Maybe it's just me. I find prebuilt stuff slow as fuck. I have a 2021 new work laptop Lenovo with latest specs, it runs slower than my 2017 built desktop. I don't even bother using my work laptop to work, I just do work stuff on my personal desktop instead.

Traum 12-17-2021 01:08 PM

All pre-built stuff has a shxtload of crap running in the background. With the last several pre-built machines that I bought, I still ended up doing some minor upgrades (like adding more RAM and swapping to bigger SSD boot drives). With a fresh OS install, the machine goes back to being as fast as its specs would dictate.

lilaznviper 12-17-2021 10:42 PM

pretty much any laptop i get for clients for work, first thing i do is wipe and install a fresh windows 10. don't need any of their garbage programs on it.

AzNightmare 12-19-2021 11:18 PM

Windows is asking me to upgrade to Windows 11 on my laptop.

Is it worth upgrading now or should I decline it?
I'm not familiar with what's new, but often, I tend to want to avoid new software updates until it's proven to be more stable or if there's just really nothing ground breaking, no rush then...

And how does this work with my Windows serial key?

lilaznviper 12-20-2021 02:23 PM

i would avoid windows 11 at the moment.

the windows license should just work if you have a windows 10 key or windows 7 key

So pretty late to the modern GPU shopping extravaganza, is it just luck of the draw or is there a way to monitor for drops?

Technically there are, like joining discord groups or following on twitter... but inventory is so scarce. It's basically a crap shoot. Too many people are using the same methods to monitor drops, so even if you were lucky to see one go down, within 10 seconds, the web site's checkout page will most likely just hang from the influx of users trying to access it. (Been there, done that, multiple times).

I think for a period of time, ME and/or CC stopped updating inventory so bots weren't able to detect when they received stock. I'm not sure if they're still doing this.

underscore 12-28-2021 08:57 AM

Is there any way to use the built in reset feature in W10 to reinstall the OS on another drive? Or do I need to start from scratch? I'm trying to swap from a SSD to a HDD so I don't think stuff like Acronis will work.

lilaznviper 12-28-2021 07:43 PM

just download the windows 10 creation tool. It will put a fresh image of windows 10 onto a usb stick and you can install to an ssd that way. pretty easy to do.

Hi, going to post this here if that is allowed.

I am GIVING AWAY (free!):

EKWB - EK CoolStream Classic PE 360 radiator
(393mm x 120mm x 45mm)
Brass chambers / Copper Fins / Copper tubing (NOT COMPATIBLE with ALU water loops)

Reason for giving away:
Turns out while it fit my case and had clearance for my motherboard/parts, it didn't leave enough room for a decent hard line tubing bend in combination with my Distro plate. Ended up using a slimmer SE 360 radiator for my build.

Info:
- I bought this in 2020 when I built my PC / custom loop. (I posted photos of the build in this thread before).
- "Brand New"... it is almost 2 years old I suppose, but never used.
- NOT CLEANED (I did NOT flush / clean the inside yet. As you should even with new radiators)
- Has been taken out of box and used to gauge clearance (how I realized it wouldn't fit my loop)
- Originally intended to sell it "after covid", but seeing as it's been 2 years and ongoing, I'm just gonna give it away.

How to claim it:
1. First person to respond here asking for it gets it (not a PM, for transparency I guess).
2. You MUST pick it up (I'm not going to deliver this to you). I live by Metrotown mall in Burnaby. Meeting nearby to be arranged after someone claims it. A simple handoff.
3. Since some people may be uncomfortable traveling in this weather, I can hold it for you a while, within reason.

Thanks and Merry... late Christmas~

any suggestions on a pair of open-back headphone? the last one i bought was the Sennheiser HD 598 back in 2015, still my daily but i need a second pair.

doesn't need to be wireless, doesn't need to have a microphone. just needs to be open-back (good for working while hearing surroundings) and preferably under $100.

Not building a new computer yet but have been thinking about maybe building a custom case.

https://i.postimg.cc/nrPj1RtH/CASEGIF.gif

In this version the PSU would be at the back. The open air style case would sit at the edge of the desk and would use L brackets to attach it to the the desk. Would first do some testing with MDF and a laser cutter and then send it to send cut send to get it cut out of metal. It would use a single sheet and have one bent for the IO. Maybe install some standoffs so I could mount a piece of acrylic or tempered glass in front.

AzNightmare 01-17-2022 05:19 AM

What do you guys generally do with your old pc setups? Do you try to part out everything the best you can? I have stuff from a 2012 build. Seems kind of a waste to just dump/recycle it but besides gpu right now, I don't think most pc parts hold much value when it's almost a decade old.

underscore 01-17-2022 08:28 AM

A few months back I sold some towers from 2011ish quite easily. They were higher end for the time but nothing crazy.
